Protesters burn Marcos, Sara effigies at Philcoa ahead of SONA
The two effigies named 'ZOMBBM' and 'SARANANGGAL' depicted Marcos and Vice President Sara Duterte as monsters, according to GMA Integrated News' James Agustin.
In a statement, Bayan said the protest showed 'people's outrage against disastrous US-Marcos regime and corrupt political system.'
The group cited the ongoing flooding crisis, Supreme Court's decision derailing the impeachment trial of Duterte, the 'blocking' of wage hike bill, ties with the United States, among others.
'The SONA protest in Metro Manila dubbed 'SONA ng Paniningil' is our people's legitimate and democratic response to the exploitation and oppression perpetuated by the US-Marcos Jr regime,' Bayan said.
'In particular, it will provide the opening salvo to a continuing series of mass protests demanding accountability (#MarcosSingilin) while pushing for the ouster of Sara Duterte and the conviction of Rodrigo Duterte in the ICC (#DutertePanagutin),' it added.
The Philippine National Police said on Monday that it will provide maximum tolerance for the protesters. —KG, GMA Integrated News

Marcos seeks to provide cheaper meds for Pinoys amid India visit
President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. on Monday said he wants his state visit to India to result in cheaper medicines for Filipinos, among others. 'I want this visit to bring concrete benefits for the Filipino people, such as more affordable medicine and greater connectivity and food security,' Marcos said in his departure speech. 'It is incumbent upon us, now more than ever, to maximize the opportunities in trade and investment with the world's fourth largest economy,' he added. The country's caretakers while the President is abroad are Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, Agrarian Reform Secretary Conrad Estrella III, and Education Secretary Sonny Angara. Marcos said he brings with him some Cabinet secretaries who will make sure that his vision of 'a close strategic relationship with India is turned into a reality as quickly as possible as we make our commitments at the highest levels of government and business.' According to the President, there is much potential for cooperation with India that will mutually benefit the two countries' citizens. 'We intend to explore these potentials by charting a plan of cooperation across a broad spectrum of shared interests: from defense, trade, and investment, to health and pharmaceuticals, connectivity, agriculture, tourism, and many others,' he said. Upon his arrival in New Delhi, Marcos will proceed to a meet and greet with the Filipino community. Aside from meeting Indian leaders, particularly Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Marcos will also meet with India's business sector. He said a lot of multinational Indian firms have already operated in the country.—AOL, GMA Integrated News

PHILCONSA urges SC to revisit facts, questions new rules in VP Sara impeachment ruling
The Philippine Constitution Association (Foundation) Inc. (PHILCONSA) has urged the Supreme Court to review the factual basis of its ruling on the impeachment of Vice President Sara Duterte, and expressed grave concern over the Court's imposition of new rules. In a statement released Sunday, PHILCONSA — through its chairman and retired Chief Justice Reynato Puno — said the Supreme Court should review 'with ultra care' its findings of facts, as he said the High Court is 'not a trier of facts,' and is mandated to interpret the law in cases where facts have already been established. 'We note that the cases at bar were directly filed in the Supreme Court. They involve highly contentious facts. These facts have not been fastidiously established in any trial court and affirmed by the Court of Appeals,' the statement read. 'We therefore urge the Supreme Court to review the salient facts it relied upon in its Decision to make sure the facts speak the truth, for only a Decision based on indubitable facts can stand time and its vicissitudes,' it added. The statement also expressed grave concern on the Supreme Court's reported imposition of seven new mandatory rules that should be followed by the House of Representatives in initiating an impeachment complaint. According to PHILCONSA, the rules imposed by the Supreme Court tilted the balance of power in its favor, as it gifted itself the power to determine the sufficiency of evidence and the reasonableness of time given to members of the House of Representatives to reach an independent decision. 'It runs counter to the advice that in interpreting the Constitution, the role of justices is to serve strictly as umpires. They should not act as pitchers or batters in favor of any party,' it said. 'The exercise of this new power which the Court gifted itself will border the anomalous when a member of the Court becomes a respondent in an impeachment case,' it added. The two concerns were the two same concerns raised by the House of Representatives, which they said would be the basis for the motion of reconsideration it would file with the Supreme Court. This comes as the Supreme Court, voting unanimously, deemed that the Articles of Impeachment against Duterte are barred for a year, ruling that these violate the right to due process. The High Court's ruling is in relation to the consolidated petition filed by Duterte, lawyer Israelito Torreon, and others seeking to declare the Articles of Impeachment against her as null and void. 'We call on the Supreme Court to avoid the political thicket, where there are too many unknowns and unknowables and thus avoid the tyranny of intangibles,' PHILCONSA said. 'Our Constitution is based on democracy and not on the monocracy of any branch of government. It will endure only if we are able to preserve the pristine principles of separation of power, checks and balances, accountability of officials, a public office is a public trust and the sovereignty of the people from whom all powers of government emanate,' it added. —KG, GMA Integrated News

Bersamin, Estrella, Angara to serve as caretakers as Marcos flies to India
Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin said Monday morning that he and two other Cabinet officials will serve as caretakers amid President Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr.'s state visit to India. Bersamin said the other caretakers are Agrarian Reform Secretary Conrad Estrella III and Education Secretary Sonny Angara. Marcos is expected to leave the country Monday morning. In a press briefing last Friday, Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Evangeline Ong Jimenez-Ducrocq said Marcos' visit would elevate the countries' shared priorities in defense and maritime cooperation, trade and investment, science and technology, and cultural exchange. Jimenez-Ducrocq also confirmed that several bilateral agreements are lined up for signing. These agreements span cooperation in law, culture, science, and technology, among other fields. The President will also have a meet and greet with the Filipino community in New Delhi.
