7 family members among 11 killed in Delhi building collapse

Independent20-04-2025
Eleven people, including three children and seven from the same family, died from a building collapse in a neighbourhood in north-east Delhi in the early hours of Saturday.
Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the Delhi Fire Services were seen working alongside locals to rescue individuals trapped under the collapsed four-storey building.
CCTV footage from a nearby building captured the collapse that occurred around 3 am local time on Saturday, leading to a thick cloud of dust filling the street.
'It felt like an earthquake. The floor shook beneath us, and before we could understand anything, everything was covered in dust,' one resident, who lives in the adjacent building, told Indian news agency PTI.
'We thought maybe something hit our house, but when we looked out, the entire building next to us had turned to rubble,' he said.
Police say 22 people were inside the building at the time of the incident.
Eleven others who were injured were reportedly rushed to a local hospital after they were pulled out of the rubble.
The building's owner, Tehseen (60), and six members of his family, including his son, two daughters-in-law, and three grandchildren, were among the 11 deceased.
One of Tehseen's other sons – Aas Mohammad – was reportedly killed in the 2020 Delhi riots.
Others who lost their lives in the building collapse include brothers Danish (23) and Naved (17), as well as Reshma (38) and Ishaq (75), officials said.
The Delhi municipal corporation said in a statement that the building was 20 years old and not structurally stable.
The building's ground floor reportedly housed four shops, while families lived on the three floors above.
Indian prime minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to those who lost their lives in the incident. 'Saddened by the loss of lives due to a building collapse in Dayalpur area of North East Delhi. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones,' he said in a post on X.
The Indian prime minister announced an ex gratia of INR 200,000 (£ 1,765) to the next of kin of each deceased. 'The injured would be given Rs 50,000 (£ 441),' he said.

Brutal murder of girl, 2, over father's debt as she has eyes gouged out and hands crushed

The world was left horrified when toddler Twinkle Sharma was brutally killed - and her mutilated body was discovered after being dragged from a rubbish bin by stray dogs The world was left appalled when Twinkle Sharma was savagely murdered at just two years of age. The tiny tot had endured horrific mistreatment, resulting in her brutal killing in Aligarh, India. Earlier this month a mum from Ohio was jailed for life for leaving her toddler home alone to die while she went on holiday. In a shocking act of vengeance, two-year-old Twinkle was tortured by two men named as Zahid and Aslam, who lived merely 500 metres from her family's home. The pair throttled the toddler to death, removed her eyes and crushed her hands after her father couldn't repay a debt. The debt is thought to have been worth 5,000 rupees, roughly equivalent to £42, and as their retribution for the unpaid sum, they claimed the little one's life. Whilst the evidence of such severe physical harm is obvious, it's suspected the child may have also suffered sexual assault. Twinkle Sharma had been reported as missing since May 31. Police then received a disturbing call - someone had witnessed stray dogs pulling a mutilated corpse from a refuse bin, reports the Express. The remains were subsequently confirmed as belonging to the two year old. The innocent youngster's mother, Shilpa said: "The stench of her body is still fresh in my nose. That image of her lying in a garbage heap, in that condition, haunts me. I do not think I can ever get it out of my head," The Print reports. The tragedy stunned the globe and Indians flocked to social media to express their fury. The hashtag #TwinkleSharma attracted more than 17,000 posts within 24 hours as citizens demanded tougher penalties for the culprits, CGTN reports. Bollywood star Ayushman Khurrana expressed his outrage, stating: "This is inhumane and barbaric; my prayers for her family. Justice must be served. #TwinkleSharma. Meanwhile, former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh shared: ". Meanwhile, former Indian cricketing legend Harbhajan Singh shared his disgust: "Makes me sick and angry to read such news! ! The government and authorities must give the right punishment to such inhumane people who kill an innocent child. No outrage from the 'usual suspects' over the brutal murder of Twinkle Sharma in Aligarh." Another Bollywood heavyweight, Abhishek Bachchan, was left speechless by the news, sharing: "Just so disgusted and angered hearing about #twinklesharma. How can somebody even think of doing such a thing? Speechless.." The tragic death of Twinkle came on the heels of a series of other horrific child murders in India, sparking national outrage over perceived failures in justice. In 2013, following widespread public fury over the rape and murder of a student in Delhi, significant changes were made to the law. The Indian government announced the introduction of the death penalty for cases of rape resulting in death. Many in the country deem such measures necessary, as in 2016, a shocking 106 rapes per day were recorded in India - with minors making up four in every ten victims.

India's Modi meets China's top diplomat as Asian powers rebuild ties

Mr Modi also noted 'respect for each other's interests and sensitiveness' in a statement on social media after meeting Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. China's foreign ministry said the countries have entered a 'steady development track' and the countries should 'trust and support' each other. Mr Wang arrived in India on Monday and has met with foreign affairs minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar as well as national security adviser Ajit Doval about the countries' disputed border in the Himalayan mountains. India's foreign ministry said Mr Wang's meeting with Mr Doval discussed 'de-escalation, delimitation and boundary affairs'. Relations plummeted in 2020 after security forces clashed along the border. The violence, the worst in decades, left 20 Indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers dead, freezing high-level political engagements. 'The setbacks we experienced in the past few years were not in the interest of the people of our two countries. We are heartened to see the stability that is now restored in the borders,' Mr Wang said. Mr Modi emphasised the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity on the border and reiterated India's commitment to a 'fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question', his office said in a statement. The rebuilding of India-China ties coincides with friction between New Delhi and Washington after US president Donald Trump imposed steep tariffs on India, a long-time ally seen as a counterbalance against China's influence in Asia. India is part of the Quad security alliance with the US, along with Australia and Japan. The chill in relations after the deadly clash in 2020 between troops in the Ladakh region affected trade, diplomacy and air travel, as both sides deployed tens of thousands of security forces in border areas. Some progress has been made since then. Last year, India and China agreed to a pact on border patrols and withdrew additional forces along some border areas. Both countries continue to fortify their border by building roads and rail networks. In recent months, the countries have increased official visits and discussed easing some trade restrictions, movement of citizens and visas for businesspeople. In June, Beijing allowed pilgrims from India to visit holy sites in Tibet. Both sides are working to restore direct flights. Last week, the spokesman for India's foreign ministry, Randhir Jaiswal, said India and China were in discussions to restart trade through three points along their 2,167-mile border. 'Settling the boundary issue between the two countries requires political compromise at the highest political level,' said Manoj Joshi, a fellow at the Observer Research Foundation, a New Delhi-based think tank. He also served as a member of the advisory board for India's National Security Council. The thaw between Beijing and New Delhi began last October when Mr Modi and Chinese president Xi Jinping met at a summit of emerging economies in Russia. It was the first time the leaders had spoken in person since 2019. Mr Modi is set to meet Mr Xi when he travels to China late this month — his first visit in seven years — to attend the summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, a regional grouping formed by China, Russia and others to counter US influence in Asia. Earlier this year, Mr Xi called for India and China's relations to take the form of a 'dragon-elephant tango' — a dance between the emblematic animals of the countries. Last month, India's external affairs minister visited Beijing in his first trip to China since 2020.
