All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Saturday (June 21, 2025) echoed Union Home Minister Amit Shah's concern that the mother tongue is being sidelined in favour of English.
Responding to Mr. Shah's recent remark that English-speaking Indians may soon feel ashamed, Mr. Palaniswami said the mother tongue holds an important place in society and added that everybody has their own views.
'He has spoken about the importance of the mother tongue. His concern is that more importance is being given to English than to native languages,' Mr. Palaniswami told reporters at the Coimbatore airport.
On the Keezhadi excavations, Mr. Palaniswami said the party had already explained its role. 'IT Wing secretary K. Pandiarajan has detailed the steps taken during the tenure of former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa and by the government that followed. All necessary clarifications were provided,' he said.
Asked about the Muruga Bhaktargal conference being held in Madurai, he said, 'In a democratic country, every citizen and organisation has the right to worship the deity of their choice. Those organising the Muruga Bhaktargal conference are exercising that right. I extend my wishes.'
On allegations that DMK functionaries used obscene language in public, Mr. Palaniswami said, 'We have already condemned such remarks. People are disturbed by them. In the 2026 Assembly elections, people will give a fitting response.'
On International Yoga Day, he said, 'Yoga is important for physical health. The Prime Minister Modi is leading these efforts. I extend my greetings.'

Fishermen's outfits appeal to bring back TN fishers stranded in Iran

1 2 3 Madurai: Fishermen associations across Tamil Nadu's southern coastal districts, including Ramanathapuram, Tuticorin, Kanyakumari, and Tirunelveli, have raised alarm over hundreds of fishermen stranded in Iran amid the ongoing war. They have urged the state and Union govts to take immediate action for their rescue and safe return. On Monday, representatives from fishermen groups in Tuticorin and Kanyakumari spoke to reporters, sharing concerns expressed by families about the welfare of their loved ones stranded abroad. Sources from Tuticorin confirmed around 50 fishermen from the area are stuck in Iran. "Over 1,000 fishermen from south Tamil Nadu are believed to be stranded in cities such as Bandar Abbas, Kish Island, Asaluyeh, and Shiruyeh," said P Justin Antony, president of the International Fishermen Development Trust, Kanyakumari. "The families, mostly women, are demanding their immediate repatriation, similar to the emergency evacuation during the Covid-19 pandemic." Karl Marx, leader of a fishermen association in Thangachimadam, Ramanathapuram, added that family members who recently spoke with those stranded in Iran are increasingly anxious due to the war situation and threats to their safety. They have appealed to local authorities and governments to act swiftly. Earlier on Sunday, Kanyakumari MP Vijay Vasanth highlighted the issue and wrote to the external affairs minister, S Jaishankar, urging his urgent intervention to ensure the fishermen's safe return. 'Remain Calm': Centre To 7.45 Lakh Indians As Iran Missiles Hit Qatar

New Delhi: Nearly eight lakh Indians live in Qatar, sources in the External Affairs Ministry told NDTV late Monday, shortly after Iran fired ballistic missiles at a US Air Force base in that country. The Indian community in Qatar has been advised to "remain calm and indoors". "In view of the ongoing situation, the Indian community is urged to be cautious... remain calm, stay indoors, and follow instructions and guidance provides by Qatari authorities." Indian officials in Doha said updates will be posted on official social media channels. Minutes earlier Iran's Supreme National Security Council confirmed it had fired ballistic missiles at the Al-Udeid air base in Qatar. Tehran stressed the attack had been targeted at the American military facility only, and that urban centres were not damaged. The strike, the Council said, it was retaliation for the US bombing three Iranian nuclear facilities Sunday. The Council's message has been seen as a message to Washington - that Iran is satisfied with these retaliatory strikes and is willing to stand down, i.e., not escalate this conflict further. According to the New York Times, US President Donald Trump, rushed to a secure Situation Room to monitor developments in West Asia, does not intend counter-strikes at this time.
