FOR many of us, the free amenities in a hotel bathroom can be a welcome gift - especially when we want to quickly freshen up.
After hours of travel, sometimes we just want to head straight out, which means we don't always have time to unpack and find our own toiletries.

Sinkcare experts have warned that one hotel product could 'wreak havoc' on your face

And it's used by millions of travellers every day

But one skincare expert has warned that reaching for one bathroom staple could be setting your skin up for disaster.
Every day, millions of travellers reach for the little bar of soap on the sink without giving it a second thought.
But this innocent travel staple could actually be wreaking havoc on your complexion in ways you never imagined.
Pro Ryan Porter from Fat Cow Skincare says using hotel soaps on your face could strip away your skin's protective barrier, leaving you with irritation for days.
He said: "Most people don't realise they're potentially damaging their skin every time they use this everyday hotel amenity on their face.
"What appears to be a simple cleansing solution is actually your skin's worst enemy".
Most people don't realise they're potentially damaging their skin every time they use this everyday hotel amenity on their face
Ryan Porter
Ryan explains that most hotel bar soaps are highly alkaline, which means they can strip away the skin's natural, acid protective shield.
He said: "When you use alkaline soap, you're essentially stripping away this natural defence system.
"It's like removing the security system from your house and wondering why you keep getting burgled.'
They also often contain strong surfactants like sodium tallowate, which means they usually lack hydrating ingredients like glycerin or ceramides that help maintain your skin's moisture barrier.
4 ways to banish wrinkles WITHOUT Botox or fillers
So when you use it on your face, it can leave the skin feeling incredibly dry and tight.
But Ryan warns that this could be just the start of the problem, with many quickly experiencing redness, increased sensitivity, and even clogged pores and breakouts.
He said: "I've seen clients come back from holidays with what they think is 'travel skin', but it's actually damage from using inappropriate products.
'People with acne-prone or sensitive skin are particularly vulnerable because their skin barrier is already compromised.'
Instead, Ryan suggests bringing your own gentle, pH-balanced cleanser when travelling that you know works well for your skin.
And he says keeping it on you or in an easily-accessed area can make it easier, so there's no reason to lift the hotel soap for convenience.
He advises: 'Pack a small bottle of your regular face wash, or invest in solid facial cleansing bars specifically formulated for facial skin – they're TSA-friendly and won't cause the same damage.'
If you do have to use hotel products, then Ryan suggests looking for pump dispensers rather than bar soaps which can be a little better.
And follow up immediately with a good moisturiser to help repair any barrier damage.
He adds: 'Your holiday photos will thank you.
Hidden Hygiene Horror
BEYOND the chemical concerns, there is an even more unsettling issue with using hotel soap - hygine.
Hotel bar soaps are often unwrapped, reused by multiple guests, and left exposed to bathroom bacteria.
Ryan says: 'Think about it: that soap has been sitting in a damp hotel bathroom, potentially used by dozens of previous guests.
'Even if housekeeping replaces it regularly, there's no guarantee it hasn't been contaminated.'
The warm, moist environment of hotel bathrooms creates the perfect breeding ground for bacteria and fungi.
Using communal bar soap on your face (especially if you have any minor cuts or irritation) could introduce harmful microorganisms to your most sensitive skin.
"There's nothing worse than dealing with angry, irritated skin when you're supposed to be relaxing and having fun.
'Your skin barrier is incredibly sophisticated – it's made up of lipids and proteins that work together to keep moisture in and harmful substances out.
"When you disrupt this with harsh, alkaline soaps, you're damaging the skin's ability to protect itself long-term.
'The science is clear: maintaining proper pH balance is essential for healthy skin function.
"Hotel soaps completely ignore this basic principle, which is why so many people struggle with skin issues after travelling.
"Understanding your skin's natural chemistry and protecting it from unnecessary damage should be a priority for anyone who cares about their complexion.'

First ever daily Ozempic-like PILL helps users shed up to 2st – and could be available within months
Manufacturer Lilly said the first-of-its-kind pill could be launched "at scale" worldwide as early as next year WEIGHT OFF First ever daily Ozempic-like PILL helps users shed up to 2st – and could be available within months Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A DAILY weight loss pill that works like Ozempic can help users shed an average of almost two stone, a study reveals. People popping the slimming pills lost an average of 12.4 per cent of their body weight after 72 weeks in a groundbreaking final-stage trial. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 2 Slimming pills could be available as early as next year Credit: Getty Bad cholesterol, blood fats and high blood pressure also dropped and stayed low, suggesting the one-a-day tablets could treat other conditions. Manufacturer Eli Lilly and Company, which also makes the blockbuster weight loss injection Mounjaro, announced the highly anticipated results today. Dr Kenneth Custer, Lily's president, said: "We're working to transform obesity care by introducing a potential once-daily oral therapy that could support early intervention and long-term disease management, while offering a convenient alternative to injectable treatments." The weight loss achieved with orforglipron appears comparable to, though slightly lower than, that seen with Novo Nordisk's weekly obesity jab, Wegovy. Manufacturer Lilly said the first-of-its-kind pill could be launched "at scale" worldwide as early as next year. It now plans to apply for regulatory approval within months. Orforglipron is a drug known as a GLP-1 receptor agonist, the same as wildly popular jabs Ozempic, Mounjaro and Wegovy. They work by mimicking hormones that tell the brain the stomach is full, releasing insulin to break down sugar in the blood. This also switches off hunger signals, so the patient eats less and avoids weight gain. Sun Health Explainer: Fat jabs Lily's 72-week study involved 3,127 adults who were obese or were overweight and had a weight-related medical problem. Participants were given either a fake pill or one of three possible doses of orforglipron. All three doses delivered "clinically meaningful weight loss". A 36mg dose - the highest dose - led to 12.4 per cent weight loss, over the course of the study, known as ATTAIN-1. People taking a fake tablet lost 0.9 per cent. The popularity of GLP-1 slimming injections has rocketed in the past two years because they cause such easy, rapid weight loss. 2 Around a third of adults in the UK are obese and the rate has doubled since the 1990s. But the side effects can be severe, and the jabs can also be expensive - usually costing between £100 - £300 per month. Lilly has not yet decided how much the pills will cost. But it is expected they will be cheaper than their jab counterparts as the pills are easier and cheaper to produce. Orforglipron is also easier to use as it can be stored at room temperature and taken at any time of day. Side effects on the tablet were similar to the weight-loss injections. Nausea was the most common side effect in the trial, affecting up to one in three people, with some also getting constipation and/or diahorrea. Dr Kenneth, said: "With these positive data in hand, we are now planning to submit orforglipron for regulatory review by year-end and are prepared for a global launch to address this urgent public health need." Dr Simon Cork, Senior Lecturer in Physiology, Anglia Ruskin University, added: 'These early results on the effectiveness of orforglipron in promoting clinically significant weight loss are a positive step forward in the development of these class of drugs. 'It should be noted that their effects on weight loss are not as profound as that seen in injectable GLP-1 receptor agonists, such as Wegovy, with a lower percentage weight loss and fewer people achieving 10 per cent weight loss at the highest dose. 'Nevertheless, that this medication is an oral form, rather than injectable, will likely be seen as more tolerable for many patients. "The manufacturing costs are also anticipated to be significantly lower than injectable drugs, meaning these medications may be more equitable in their availability. 'It should be noted that these are preliminary, non-peer reviewed results and we will need to see the full trial methodology and data before a more comprehensive analysis can be undertaken.'

Top 20 countries to retire that could save you cash in your golden years – including island with 300 days of sun
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE top 20 countries for Brits to retire abroad have been revealed - and they could save you cash in your golden years. Experts looked at factors including affordability, the cost of buying a home, lifestyle, healthcare and safety. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 Ireland has come out on top as the number one destination for British retirees Credit: Getty 3 Malta also made the list for its accessible migration schemes and its affordability Credit: Getty 3 Cyprus is among the top 20 because of its good weather and beach-oriented lifestyle Credit: Getty Spain and France might be the first destinations that come to mind if you're thinking about where retirees will flock to. But Ireland has been named the ideal overseas destination, according to analysis carried out by wealth management firm Hoxton Wealth. Each country was ranked with a score from 1 to 100 - and Ireland scored an impressive 85. That's partly because of the ease to migrate there legally post-Brexit. Ireland scored the highest of all countries for visa access and residency pathways because UK citizens have unique rights under the Common Travel Area (CTA) agreement. It means UK can live, work, retire, and access public services in Ireland without restriction, unlike any other EU country following Brexit. Plus, it's easier to integrate because everyone speaks English and it's still close to the UK. In joint second place were Portugal and Cyprus, which both scored highly on lifestyle and safety. People thinking of a move to Portugal can enjoy mild winters and hot summers, as well as its relaxed and outdoor-oriented lifestyle. Popular expat areas include on the Algarve, the Lisbon coast, the Silver Coast, and on Madeira. I explored the tiny European country with underground cities and little-known islands Portugal is also consistently ranked among the best places to live for retirees globally. Cyprus was also highly rated for its climate and its relaxed, beach-oriented lifestyle. It's known for being expat-friendly, especially around areas like Paphos, Limassol and Lanarca - which all offer great outdoor living year-round. The top 20 countries ranked and how they scored 1 - Ireland = 87 2 - Cyprus = 85 3 - Portugal = 85 4 - Malta = 83 5 - Malaysia = 81 6 - Panama = 81 7 - Spain = 81 8 - Greece = 80 9 - Mauritius = 80 10 - Turkey = 80 11 - UAE = 80 12 - France = 78 13 - Italy = 76 14- Uruguay = 76 15 - Canada = 73 16 - Japan = 73 17 - Thailand = 72 18 - New Zealand = 70 19 - USA = 69 20 - Australia = 68 UK baseline = 77 Malta was next on the list as it has structured and accessible residence schemes for British retirees. Everything is also accessible there as English is an official language. The country has been picked out for its affordability, including affordable healthcare, transport and dining. Property prices are rising in areas like Sliema and Valletta but there's still excellent value in smaller towns and in Gozo. Plus, it's said to have a huge 300 days of sun per year. Although Spain has typically been seen as a haven for expats, it's now slipped down the rankings because Brits are regarded as third-country nationals. You would need a visa to stay there for any longer than 90 days in any 180-day period. Retirees can get the Non-Lucrative Visa (NLV), but you'd need to show a passive income of €28,800 (£24,370) a year per person. Still, Brits could be drawn to the Spanish lifestyle - including its sunny Mediterranean climate - as well as the well-established expat hubs in places like the Costa Blanca, Costa del Sol and in the Balearics. The countries rated best for cost of living were Malaysia, Turkey and Thailand, with Canada, Japan and Australia scoring the best for economic and political stability. The UAE was rated best for taxation with no income tax on individuals, no inheritance tax and no tax on pensions or investment income. Chris Ball, CEO of Hoxton Wealth, said: "Places like Spain, France, Australia, and the like have long been seen as safe, sunny, and straightforward. But the world has changed. "Rising living costs, shifting visa rules post-Brexit, evolving tax landscapes, and new global lifestyle trends mean the decision of where to retire or relocate now involves far more than sunshine and property prices. "UK residents considering retiring abroad need to look beyond purely the climate or cost of living." Best places in the UK to retire If you're planning to stay in the UK, there are also plenty of great options. A recent study by Legal and General ranked the "wine capital" of Britain on its list, as well as areas of Surrey and Buckinghamshire. Chesham and Amersham took the top spot as the best place in the UK to spend your golden years. The area – popular for its transport links to London, its charming and historic streets, and for being a gateway for walkers and cyclists to the picturesque Chilterns – was ranked the highest in L&G's index. The picturesque town of Beaconsfield, also in Buckinghamshire, came in second place, while Dorking and Horley in Surrey was third. Also in Surrey, Goldalming and Ash was fourth, while Mid Sussex completed the top five. West Sussex - which is part of the wine capital of the UK and produces more wine than any county - also made the list, with East Grinstead and Uckfield coming in 10th. They were ranked on access to healthcare, opportunities to build social connections, access to nature, local amenities and financial security.
