Tata Steel new plant: $1.5-billion electric arc furnace facility to come up at Port Talbot; UK government gives 500 million pounds
Tata Steel will be beginning the construction of its state-of-the-art electric arc furnace (EAF) facility at Port Talbot, Wales, in July 2025, with production expected to commence by 2027.
The company confirmed in its FY24-25 annual report that all key approvals for the $1.5 billion project are now in place.
Backed by 500 million pounds in funding from the UK government, the project marks a major step in Tata Steel's journey towards low-carbon steel production. Once operational, the EAF is projected to produce 3.2 million tonnes of low-emission steel annually and cut over 50 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions over the next decade.
'We are now transitioning to decarbonised and state-of-the-art EAF-based steelmaking by FY2027-28, supported by 500 million pounds in the UK Government funding,' Tata Steel CEO & MD T V Narendran and executive director & CFO Koushik Chatterjee said in the company's report.
The decommissioning of two ageing blast furnaces at Port Talbot has already been completed, and the company has shifted to a downstream-focused model, using steel substrate sourced from its operations in India, the Netherlands, and other suppliers to serve its UK customers.

'We have exited from steelmaking through the end-of-life heavy end assets in Port Talbot, and moved to a downstream model using imported substrate from India, the Netherlands and other external sources,,' a senior official explained.
Tata Steel is also eyeing major cost rationalisation, aiming to reduce fixed costs from 762 million pounds in FY25 to 540 million pounds in the following year. This will be achieved through optimisation of input costs, streamlining of downstream operations, and IT modernisation.
Chairman N Chandrasekaran said the company is firmly on track with its green transition. ' The decommissioning of two blast furnaces at Port Talbot, has cleared the way for the next-generation Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) project, supported by the UK government,' he said.
The EAF facility will also make use of locally available scrap metal, further reinforcing the company's move to a more sustainable and circular production model.

Ahmedabad: A textile design student at NIFT Gandhinagar is 3D-printing custom shoe soles to give everyday runners the kind of personalized footwear that only elite athletes could afford earlier. Jay Makan decided to examine shoes worn by athletes for his graduation project and struck gold. "While elite athletes get custom-made shoes, not all competing runners can afford them. Thus, I focused on the midsoles, insoles and outer soles to improve functionality and performance," said Makan, whose project was part of the institute's student showcase on June 6. His project involved 3D-printed material for the parts of shoes that can be customised based on the wearer's feet. Makan used thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) polymers. "We took different combinations and densities to come up with the optimal mix. While some gave better flexibility, some gave better resistance. I was inspired by one of NIFT alumni's similar initiative to explore the possibilities offered by 3D printing technology," he said. Adani plans projects worth 17,500cr to expand CSMIA's capacity by '29
New Delhi: The Adani group has identified a string of projects — well over 310 that will require a capex of about Rs 17,500 crore by March 2029 — to augment the annual passenger handling capacity of Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to 6.5 crore passengers annually (CPA). The projects include building a bigger Terminal 1 in place of the existing terminal, expanding Terminal 2's capacity from 4 CPA to 4.5 CPA and increasing the hourly flight handling capacity to over 52. By 2029-30, the combined capacity of CSMIA and the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is expected to touch 11.5 CPA, to "cater to the growing demands of Mumbai region and Mumbai Metropolitan Region", shows an order issued by the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) recently. Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) "has proposed extending existing taxiway M to link it with the physical beginning of runway 27, including the construction of a bridge over Mithi river. The proposed Taxiway M extension will create an additional holding area for aircraft.… It will be designed for Code F aircraft (that include Boeing 747-8 and Airbus A380)," the order states. The phasing of the taxiway infrastructure changes should be reviewed to ensure that sufficient capacity is provided as demand grows," the order shows. MIAL has proposed a capex of Rs 17,440 crore in the fourth control period, that is upto March 31, 2029, on the capacity augmentation at CSMIA through the various identified projects related to key areas including airside improvement and passenger terminals. T1 is proposed to be reconstructed at a cost of Rs 3,130 crore by Sept 2028. T2 expansion is projected to cost Rs 142 crore and be over by March 2027. The air traffic control technical block is projected to cost Rs 185 crore and be done by March 2027.

Somanna urges Karnataka govt to reconsider dropped railways projects
Mysuru: Union minister of state for railways V Somanna, on Sunday urged Karnataka govt to reconsider its decision to drop the Chamarajanagar–Hejjala and Mysuru–Kushalnagar railway projects. Following a review meeting with Mysuru division railway officials, Somanna said he wrote to the state urging it to take up both projects and plans to personally follow up with chief minister Siddaramaiah in the next 15 days. "State govt earlier returned both proposals citing an inability to implement them," the Union minister said. "I've since written requesting a reconsideration. I also spoke to Chamarajanagar MP Sunil Bose and Mysuru district minister HC Mahadevappa, but there has been no progress so far. I will increase pressure and ensure that these projects are approved at the earliest. Developmental initiatives should go beyond party lines. " On electrification progress between Mysuru and Chamarajanagar, he said only a 1.2km stretch near Kadakola, close to Mysuru airport, remains incomplete. He said this is due to "technical challenges".
