On The Up: Whangārei trust wants to offer supermarket alternative, cheaper butter

Taimahi Trust also has a long-term aim of making everything in the store available online, so customers can place orders whenever it suits them, and receive them through delivery or click-and-collect.
Delivery areas cover greater Whangārei including Hikurangi, Te Kamo, Maunu and Onerahi, with plans to deliver to hubs as demand grows.
Chairwoman and chief executive Rachel Hill is even looking at expanding the store's range, so it will eventually sell some cheeses and butter.
With the price of butter being a hot topic at the moment, she hopes to be able to sell it for cheaper than supermarkets, while still making a small margin.
'Even though we're a charity we still want to be business-like and we also want to be cheaper than other places. It helps people with their budget and people who might be food insecure.'
But Hill is conscious of working on one step at a time.

The trust previously delivered vege boxes but had to retrench this during the post-Covid downturn, before branching out again thanks to grants from the likes of the Ministry of Social Development.
Resilience and fortitude are part of the story of the trust, which began as a coffee cart in 2017.
Hill and Alison Faithful started the enterprise for their sons, who both have Down syndrome, and were struggling to find training and work opportunities - like many with intellectual disabilities.
It has now developed into a groundbreaking training model for young people with intellectual or learning disabilities, creating a community for them, Hill said.

Taimahi Trust currently has 12 staff and 20 trainees, who often surpass what is expected of them, she said.
Some have moved into supervisory roles, while others have gained paid work or further training, Hill said.
'They come here quite helpless because people have done things for them all the time - we turn it around,' she said.
Hill's son Nathan is still a trainee and she, like many parents of the trainees, has noticed large changes due to the trust's holistic approach.

Strategic development manager James Ibell-Roberts said every time someone comes into the store or buys a product, it helps empower and upskill the trainees.
'For us, the more people coming into the store and engaging with our trainees is breaking down the social barriers or isolation that our trainees experience.'
Taimahi Trust works with social enterprise Foodtogether to get affordable fresh produce, he said.
'We're about making affordable and nutritious kai - many of it grown by our trainees - making it accessible either at people's door or in store.'
The store is also less overwhelming for customers who might struggle with sensory overload in a supermarket, Ibell-Roberts said.
Further long-term plans include providing accommodation for trainees from wider Northland and branching out with different microenterprises.

The proof of this pudding will most definitely be in the eating, with changes brought into the building supply chain. The government announced recently thousands of additional building products including plasterboard, cladding systems, external doors and windows will all be easier to access in construction sites across New Zealand. Building and Construction Minister Chris Penk said quality overseas building products have been given the green light for New Zealand construction, ending costly monopolies on a small number of products that are currently used in the country. Mr Penk said it was 50% more expensive to build a standalone home in New Zealand than in Australia, which he called outrageous. New Zealand Certified Builders Southland president Will Kennedy said it was good news for builders and hopefully the cost of a house but there were questions which remained. "It is going to be good for the industry, bringing all these extra products into the country which we can use," he said. "The issue is whether they are going to be up to standard. We have windows brought in for jobs from the designers and have noticed they do not meet the correct standards. "So I suppose it is not fair on the local manufacturers. But we are just going to have to wait and see what happens." The government wants to see more products on the market to bring competition and hopefully bring down the price. Price relief could not come soon enough, Mr Kennedy said. He said costs were continually going up. "Every week you would get an email saying something is going up. Everything goes up but not that much goes down. Steel has gone up, 5% this month for concrete. Gib went up 15% in January. "There are no real specific reasons they give. The cost per square metre now to build a house is $4000 per sqm. Back before Covid you were looking at say $2700." He said New Zealand being a small country was a big hinderance. "I think a lot of the manufacturers do not want to come here. "We are a long way away, not a big market, not a lot of money to make. Are they going to come all the way over to New Zealand to sell their parts?" At the moment there were not a lot of suppliers to pick from and builders were locked into one. A couple of years ago Gib was in short supply and the price skyrocketed with builders caught out with clients unable to afford the new prices. He said consent authorities would be aware of the new products coming into the country and would maintain their high standards. One of the main issues was building standards in New Zealand were the toughest in the world and that led to increased cost to build houses, he said. "We build houses which are 10 times better than than other parts of the world. Part of that is because of our geographical makeup, earthquakes and other stuff. But what they get away with overseas they would not get away with here. It does not, generally, come back at them."

Unemployment rate expected to hit nine-year high

Unemployment is set to hit its highest level in nearly nine years, as the lagging effects of last year's recession and the sluggish recovery hit hiring and wages. Economists expect the rate to rise to 5.3% at the end of June – the highest since the end of 2016 – and up from 5.1% in the previous quarter, with jobs having been shed and hiring almost at a standstill. "We expect the unemployment rate to rise... as very modest growth in the labour force - labour supply – meets a small contraction in employment – labour demand," ANZ senior economist Miles Workman said. Economists have picked that the labour market was close to the bottom, but the lack of meaningful growth in the past quarter has cast doubt whether this might be the case. Workman suggested a degree of "labour hoarding" had suppressed unemployment as firms opted to hold on to staff in anticipation of an economic upturn. ADVERTISEMENT "If a recovery in economic momentum doesn't do the heavy lifting when it comes to 'right-sizing' firms' labour input, a further reduction in headcount may be needed." ASB senior economist Mark Smith said partial indicators since the last set of numbers had shown falling job advertisements, firms still shedding staff, little problem in finding staff except in specialised positions, and people quitting the workforce. "Earlier falls in hiring and more competition for jobs is expected to continue to deter some candidates from actively seeking work." No hiring, some firing Westpac senior economist Michael Gordon said chief among the casualties of the downturn and job losses have been young people. "As the economy cooled off, this group has found themselves out of work again or are struggling to get into work in the first place." The overall slide in immigration from post-Covid gains of more than 130,000 a year to a mere 15,000, and a subsequent exodus to Australia, are likely to be marginal influences for the labour market. ADVERTISEMENT However, cooling wage growth may be a more significant factor. Expectations are that private sector labour costs grew about 2.3% in the June quarter – a four-year low – as the weaker employment market shifted the bargaining advantage to employers from workers. That would mean wages falling behind rising inflation, but would also reduce wage pressures on domestic prices. "Wage inflation can be considered broadly consistent with CPI inflation around target, but given we're a decent clip from the labour market entering inflationary territory... it's fair to say that disinflation pressures stemming from the labour market are set to continue for a while yet," Workman said. Kiwibank economists said conditions were right for another Reserve Bank interest rate cut on August 20. "Downside risks to medium term inflation are growing given the soft labour market and dimming global outlook. "We expect the RBNZ to cut the cash rate by 25bps (basis points) at the August meeting.
