David Gray sees Hibs answer biggest question as Kieron Bowie opens the toolbox but one thing needs managed
David Gray praised his Hibs stars for shrugging off their European hangover and giving their fans an opening day Premiership win.
The capital side could easily have felt sorry for themselves after they were knocked out of the Europa League in the last minutes of extra time to Midtjylland.
Gray watched his players pick themselves up off the canvas to take three points thanks to a Kieron Bowie double at Dundee.
It gives them the perfect shot in the arm ahead of their trip to Serbia to take on Partizan Belgrade in their Europa Conference League clash.
Gray said: 'I'm delighted because like you just mentioned there, the emotional side to it as well.
'Everything that the players put in on Thursday night, everybody would be looking at today's game and wondering would there be a hangover? How will players react?
'First time they've learnt Thursday, Sunday. So I think all I can say is the players reacted in the best possible way.
'A real professional performance, started the game really well and I thought controlled the game from start to finish which is a real pleasing thing.
'The biggest thing is when the mentality has been asked, the questions asked about it, it was definitely there and the character of the players was definitely there to see today which is positive.'
Bowie played his first full 90 minutes in two seasons. Gray is refusing to get carried away but believes his striker has all the tools to be a big success at Easter Road.
Gray stated: 'I think that's the reason why he was brought to the football club, because of the qualities he's got.
'You've seen that, I've mentioned a lot about being suited to Scottish football as well.
'The physicality, he really enjoys that side to the game and he was always one that was going to benefit from a strong pre-season.
'We're getting that just now.
'One thing you've just said there about 90 minutes, so that's something we internally need to manage.
'We can't be putting everything in the one, pushing them too much.
'We need to manage that as much as we can as well.
'But that's why you've got strength and depth in the squad and competition for places. But right now he's benefiting from having a really good off-season.
'The confidence levels will be high, the Scottish recognition as well which is fantastic for him on a personal note.
'But he's working hard every day, he's getting fitter, he's getting stronger and really benefiting from a strong pre-season which is great.'
Hibs got off to a winning start after waiting for five games for three points last season.
He added: 'It was a big part of my motivation today.
'I heard a lot of people saying last season, imagine we had just a poor start, not a very poor start last season.
'So the mindset of the players is, here's the first opportunity to try and put that right.'

Conference League draw in full as Crystal Palace learn opponents despite ongoing dispute about Europa League place
CRYSTAL PALACE are a step closer to finding out their opponents for their first ever European match as their Uefa row rumbles on. The Eagles won the FA Cup to secure a spot in the Europa League. 2 2 However, they were deemed to be part of the same multi-club ownership regime as Lyon, who also qualified for Europe's second tier. Last month, they were dumped down into the Conference League. Palace have appealed the decision and are set to learn their fate in the coming days. However, it's most likely their first-ever venture into continental football will be in the Conference League. And they will play one of Norwegian side Fredrikstad and Danish club Midtjylland. The Scandinavian duo play in the third-round of Europa League qualifying with the LOSER facing the Eagles in the Conference League play-off clash. The winner of that tie will progress to the Conference League proper. Palace avoided the likes of Santa Clara, who finished fifth in the Portuguese league last season, Servette - second in the Swiss top flight - and Utrecht, who ended up fourth in Holland's Eredivisie. However, there is one potential spanner in the works in that both the Norwegian and Danish top-flights are currently halfway through their season. That means their players will be much more in match shape than Palace's who have just a few pre-season minutes under their belts this summer. Crystal Palace legend Geoff Thomas slams Uefa for denying them a Europa League place Crystal Palace will be at home for the first leg. Last month, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) confirmed they received an appeal from the Eagles - whose fans launched a fierce protest - calling on them to overturn Uefa's decision to demote them from the Europa League. Palace's appeal also calls for French club Lyon and Premier League rivals Nottingham Forest - who took their place in the Europa League - to be dropped down to the Conference League. The Eagles' fate has been in doubt ever since Uefa raised questions over former owner John Textor's links with Lyon, who have also qualified. Textor has since sold up at Palace and been booted out of Lyon - but neither club had complied by Uefa's multi-club rules before a new March 1 deadline. Forest have currently taken Palace's place in the Europa League after writing to Uefa to complain about Textor's links between Selhurst Park and Lyon. Should CAS overturn the decision, Forest would take on Fredrikstad or Midtjylland in the Conference League playoff tie.

I quit my life in Scotland to become a US wrestling star
Luke Scouler, from Motherwell, left his job as a residential carer for young people to pursue his dream of being a pro wrestler. In just a few years, Luke, now known to fans as Crixus, has transitioned from sleeping in a gym car park to becoming a breakout star at Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW), an American wrestling brand which propelled the careers of John Cena and Dave Batista. The Scottish War Machine, who featured in the hit Netflix documentary Wrestlers, was also crowned OVW's first-ever Scottish champion. Luke (AKA Crixus) now stars in the Netflix-famous Ohio Valley Wrestling (Image: Supplied) Read more: Canadian star says THIS Scottish man is a 'certified f****** legend' Luke, 33, previously worked in residential care at Inspire Scotland, a social care organisation that supports children and young people. He recalled his decision to leave his job and home almost instantly after watching wrestling on TV. Luke said: 'I really loved that job. "But it was tough emotionally. "I've always had a bit of a Batman complex – I thought I was going to save everybody. 'I was in a bad place with it. "I knew it wasn't for me, and I was burned out. "I remember sitting in my house in Newmains watching TV with my dog, Odin, when wrestling came on and I just thought: 'Screw it, let's go.' "Scots have made it big in this business – why couldn't I?" Luke drove to London that same night and enrolled in a wrestling academy run by former WWE star and current OVW head trainer Al Snow. He said: "I drove through the night with no plan and no place to stay. "Me and the dog slept in the car for a bit. "Eventually the guy who ran it asked if I was serious. "I told him I'd already quit my job and left my house. "That was it. "We moved into the gym and didn't go back." Luke joined OVW in 2019 after coming first in a 300-person wrestling combine. However, his career was halted due to Covid, forcing him to stay in the UK for two years. Now based in Kentucky, he is one of the biggest stars at the promotion, and believes his Scottish roots are what set him up for success. Luke said: "We've got thicker skin, especially in Glasgow. "You're battle-ready by the time you leave primary school, so wrestling comes naturally to us. "I'm a smartass cheeky b******, and the accent helps too. "Over here in the States, people already think we're mental which helps. "I just turned my personality up to 11. "I wasn't pretending to be someone else – just the version of me you probably wouldn't want to sit next to in a pub. "I get to act like an a**** and they still love me. "They boo you, but they're cheering underneath." Al Snow, his mentor, believes Luke could be the next big Scottish wrestling star. Read more: ITV viewers 'definitely watching' new David Tennant drama with 'fantastic cast' He said: "With the success of Joe Hendry and Drew McIntyre, Scotland is increasingly a potential source of talent. "With Crixus, we may have another superstar on our hands. "His dedication has been incredible. "To make it in this business, you have to sacrifice and do things out of the ordinary. "And that's why I think he's got what it takes."

Aberdeen icon Willie Miller reckons Hearts and Hibs have a major part to play at the top end of the Premiership table this season. Both sides have already started their competitive seasons, Hearts winning four out of four in the Premier Sports Cup group stages, while Hibs showed up well versus Midtjylland in Europa League qualifying despite eventual defeat in the second leg. They started their league endeavours with a 2-1 win at Dundee and the Jambos begin their term versus Miller's former side. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad With Rangers in a state of change under new head coach Russell Martin, the former defender senses a chance for Hearts, Hibs and Aberdeen to pounce on Ibrox transitioning, with Motherwell holding them to a 1-1 draw. He has backed those three sides to cause Rangers issues in the hunt to dethrone Celtic as champions. Willie Miller on Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs Miller was asked by Sportsound host Kenny MacIntyre if he felt the Scottish Cup holders were favourites for third. He responded: 'Difficult to say, Kenny, to be honest. I think that the season, last season, was so unpredictable. Very good start, and it tailed away in a magnificent finish. Jimmy Thelin, you know, he's an experienced manager, he's brought a trophy to the club, he'll get the backing of the chairman, there's no doubt that there's funds there for him to spend. He has been spending them, he's spending the cash that's available to him as well. 'Hearts have got off to a flyer, they've got that momentum going haven't they, and I'm sure Alan Preston will be delighted with that, and a very, very experienced manager as well. Hibs looking extremely strong, although not winning in Europe, but looking strong in terms of the quality that they've got too. When you're looking at the title race, it's, these teams that we're speaking about that are going to have a huge impact in who's lifting the title, or who is... if Rangers can actually put up a strong challenge to Celtic. 'They've got to take care of these three who I think at this moment in time, going into this season. are strong sides. If they can't take care of the Aberdeen Hibs and Hearts, then they won't get close to Celtic.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hearts, Hibs and Aberdeen verdict on race for third Earlier in the show, Rory Loy was previewing the start to the Premiership season, where excitement for the third place battle was high. Former Jambos skipper Steven Pressley, however, has been backed to show himself keen on proving doubters wrong amid many tipping his Dundee side to struggle. The ex Falkirk and Rangers striker said: I'm excited for the race for third. Aberdeen, Hibs, Hearts. I think Hearts have got a big plus in that they're not in European competition. Of course you want to be there but so many of our clubs have struggled getting through the qualifiers, so I think the race for third is a big talking point. 'Steven Presley and Dundee will be desperate to prove everyone wrong who's tipping them to struggle, so the battle for relegation is always an interesting one. But I think third place is going to be really hotly contested this year.
