Furious Chinese fans turn on teen Zhang Ziyu, ex-WNBA star Han after shock loss to Japan
Formerly hailed as 'phenomenal' and the 'twin towers' of the team, the pair were among their side's leading scorers in the 90-81 semi-final loss in Shenzhen, with 17 and 18 points respectively.
But those points came on their worst shooting nights of the tournament, where teenager Zhang made 50 per cent of her attempts, and Yu 37 per cent.
The change in public opinion was swift and brutal, especially for the 7ft 5in (2.26 metre), 150kg (330lbs) Zhang, who had previously earned nothing but accolades. Defeat brought comments about her weight and speed around the court, with the politest suggesting she had 'no mobility' and 'no technique inside the paint'.
'You can't expect a player like this to turn the situation around. She's not Yao Ming,' said one commentator.
'The reason why Yao Ming is successful is that he is not just tall,' another replied.

Sell it like Manchester United: how Hong Kong champions aim to conquer Asia
Enterprising Hong Kong champions Tai Po have set their sights on conquering Asia, both on the field and off it. And to help achieve that, they are looking to tap into the know-how behind Manchester United's recent high-profile visit to the city. The ambitious club have enlisted Paul Kam, whose ProEvents company has staged several marquee matches across the continent over three decades, to arrange around three high-profile overseas friendly fixtures each season. Kam promoted United's tour of Malaysia and Hong Kong in May. 'We want our club to have more exposure in the Asian market,' Francis Yip, who bankrolls Tai Po alongside his wife Catherine, told the Post. China's football team flopped in World Cup 2026 bid. Now officials launch esports version
Chinese football chiefs have revealed plans to launch a national esports team – and have been mocked by social media users who said that the body had done enough damage to the sport in the country. The Chinese Football Association (CFA) said on Monday that the team would compete in 'events organised by Fifa, the Asian Football Confederation and other organisations'. The CFA sacked national coach Branko Ivankovic after a 1-0 defeat to Indonesia that effectively ended the country's hopes of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. China have appeared at only one World Cup, all the way back in 2002, and are currently 94th in Fifa's world rankings. However, the country has dominated esports in recent years, winning four out of five gold medals at the Asian Games, with a talent pool of about 490 million users to choose from.
