'That is our job': Irfan Pathan reveals who was behind his sacking as IPL commentator, not Kohli or Rohit

First Post10 hours ago
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan opened up about his IPL 2025 commentary exit, clarifying it wasn't due to Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma, but possibly his honest critique of another star.
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has finally spoken about his sudden exit from the IPL 2025 commentary panel. Many fans thought that legendary players Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma were behind it, but Pathan cleared the air in an interview with The Lallantop. He said that it was not because of them, but maybe because of his honest criticism of Hardik Pandya.
Hardik Pandya was named captain of Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2024 season, replacing Rohit Sharma. However, the decision did not go down well with MI fans, who wanted Rohit to continue. Hardik had left MI to join the Gujarat Titans two years earlier, but when he returned for his second stint with Mumbai, things didn't start well and he faced a lot of criticism.

Pathan opens up on the likely reason
Pathan explained that as a commentator it was his duty to give fair opinions, even if it meant pointing out mistakes. 'If I'm criticising you in 7 matches out of 14, I'm still being lenient. That is our job as broadcaster,' Pathan stated in the interview.
He further clarified that there's no rivaly between him and Pandya. 'There is no rivalry. All the Baroda players who have come after me — Deepak Hooda, Swapnil Singh, Krunal Pandya or Hardik Pandya — none of them can say that Irfan-Yusuf did not help them,' Pathan shared.

Pathan even revealed that years ago, VVS Laxman admitted that he made a mistake by not selecting Hardik in Sunrisers Hyderabad's squad in 2012, when Pathan had recommended him. 'VVS Laxman admitted on Star Sports, that he was at fault for not listening to me, and not picking Hardik in 2012. If he had picked him then, Hardik would have played for Hyderabad,' Pathan revealed.
At the same time, Irfan said that criticism should not be taken personally. 'There is nothing wrong in criticising the player, if you play, you have to go through that. It happened with Sunil Gavaskar, the great Sachin Tendulkar… they never made anyone feel, they were bigger than the game. But I'm against the derogatory words used against Pandya,' Pathan clarified.

Irfan Pathan Reveals Story Behind 'Tongue Out' Celebration: 'Smelling Like Indian Curry'

Last Updated: Irfan Pathan revealed his 'tongue out' celebration in the 2008 Perth Test was a response to racial taunts from the Australian crowd. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan recently shared several untold stories from his playing days, including the true inspiration behind his iconic 'tongue out' celebration during the 2008 Perth Test against Australia. India and Australia have always had a fierce on-field rivalry, characterised by intense competition and heated moments. The 2007-08 series was no exception, filled with controversies and spirited battles. During the Perth Test, while Irfan was fielding near the boundary, he was subjected to racial taunts from a section of the Australian crowd. 'When I was fielding at the boundary line, they targeted me by saying things like, 'You have eaten Indian curry, you're smelling like Indian curry.' The Australian crowd try to get under your skin," Irfan was quoted as saying in an interview with The Lallantop. Instead of moving away, Irfan chose to respond in his own unique way. 'I didn't change my field position and instead gave them replies. 'When I took a wicket, I took my tongue out to indicate that my tongue is very clean and there's no smell. So, that celebration was for the crowd," he explained. India went on to win that historic Perth Test by 72 runs, marking one of their most famous overseas victories. Irfan was named Player of the Match for his all-round performance, scoring 28 and 26 runs in the two innings and taking five wickets to help India bounce back in the series. However, alongside these highs, Irfan also faced career setbacks. He recalled how in 2009, despite performing well in Sri Lanka alongside his brother Yusuf Pathan — where India chased down 60 runs off just 27-28 balls — he was sidelined during the New Zealand tour. 'It was back in 2009, when we were in New Zealand. Before that, my brother (Yusuf Pathan) and I had won matches in Sri Lanka. The situation in which we had pulled a win – if it had been anyone else in our place, they wouldn't have been dropped for a year. In that match against Sri Lanka, we needed 60 runs from just 27-28 balls, and we won it from there," Irfan was quoted as saying to The Lallantop. 'In New Zealand, I was benched for the first match, the second match, and the third match as well. The fourth match was a draw because of rain. I wasn't in the final match either. Then I asked Gary sir why I had been dropped. If there was something I needed to improve, he could tell me, but I wanted to know the reason I was left out," he added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Jasprit Bumrah confirms availability for Asia Cup 2025 to Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee: Report

Bumrah's workload and fitness has been widely discussed of late after the star pacer skipped two matches in the five-Test series in England recently. The 31-year-old speedster, however, isn't likely to face fitness issues by bowling a maximum of four overs in the Asia Cup, which returns to the T20 format this year. In a massive boost for the Indian team ahead of the Asia Cup, premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah has conveyed his availability to the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee for the continental event that takes place in the T20 format in the UAE next month. According to a report on The Indian Express, the 31-year-old pace spearhead had spoken to the selectors a few days ago, confirming that he has no fitness issues at the moment and is raring to go at the event, where the Men in Blue could face arch-rivals Pakistan thrice including in the final. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Bumrah has informed the selectors that he will be available for Asia Cup selection. The selection committee will meet and discuss it when they meet next week,' a source was quoted by the newspaper as saying. Bumrah could be donning the iconic blue jersey after more than a year Bumrah has not represented India in white-ball cricket since starring in the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team's triumph in last year's T20 World Cup in the US and the Caribbean. The Mumbai Indians pacer had collected 2/18 in the final against South Africa as the Men in Blue snatched victory from the jaws of defeat at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados. There has been plenty of discussion regarding Bumrah's fitness and workload after the pacer skipped two matches in the five-Test series against England recently, including the final Test at The Oval with the series on the line. The Indian team, after all, has been advised to carefully manage Bumrah's workload after a back injury in January had sidelined him for four months. However, given the fact that Bumrah will be bowling a maximum of four overs, as well as the fact that the Men in Blue will have three to four days off between games in the group stage, workload and fitness should not be an issue for him in the upcoming event.

Dewald Brevis' signing was in compliance with rules: CSK clarify after Ashwin's remarks spark controversy

Chennai Super Kings on Saturday issued clarification regarding the signing of Dewald Brevis midway through the IPL 2025 season, saying the signing process of the South African batter was in "complete compliance with the rules and regulations" of the league. Independence Day 2025 Modi signals new push for tech independence with local chips Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose gave India its own currency A raging controversy was sparked as former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, currently in the CSK roster, hinted in his YouTube channel that the five-time IPL champions were willing to pay "extra" to avail Brevis' services. "Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player during TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules and regulations of IPL," the CSK said in a statement. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like They were so beautiful before; look at them now; number 10 will Surprise you Undo "In April, 2025, Dewald Brevis was signed for a league fee of INR 2.2 Cr as a replacement player for the injured Gurjapneet Singh, who was picked up at the IPL 2025 Player Auction held at Abadi AI Johar Arena, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia for a price of INR 2.2 Cr," the statement further added. The IPL rules in vogue state that the signing of a replacement player should not exceed the price of the player he will be replacing on the roll. Live Events In that scenario, the originally unsold Brevis was paid Rs 2.2 crore by CSK, over and above his base price of Rs 75 lakh, to sign him on April 18. Gurjapneet Singh, the 26-year-old Tamil Nadu pacer, did not get a game in the previous season before an unspecified injury struck him down. Hence, the CSK maintained that Brevis was signed in full accordance with the IPL Player Regulations 2025-27, specifically clause 6.6 under 'Replacement Players' rule. "A replacement Player signed pursuant to either paragraph 6.1 or 6.2 can be recruited at a League Fee which shall not be more than the League Fee that would have been payable to the injured/unavailable Player for the relevant Season. "If a Replacement Player is recruited during a Season, the League Fee actually paid to him will be reduced to take account of the Franchisee's matches during the relevant Season which took place before he was registered and any other relevant deductions under the Player Contract," states the IPL rule. The controversy broke out when Ashwin said the CSK was ready to pay more to sign Brevis, who had cracked a brilliant hundred against Australia in a T20I match earlier this week, after a few other IPL teams' talks with the SA batter were hindered by the price. "I will tell you something about Brevis. He had a great time last IPL. A few teams left him because of the price. When he was supposed to be signed as a replacement, he was supposed to be signed at the base price. "But what happens is you talk to the agents and the player will say, if you give me X amount extra, I will come," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel. "...And CSK were ready to pay him, hence he came. In the back half, the CSK combination was strong. They will go with Rs 30 crore in IPL 2026 mini auction," Ashwin added. It may be recalled that Ashwin is reportedly in talks with the Super Kings about his future in the franchise amid speculation that he might seek his release from the team. The IPL 2025 was a disappointing one for the senior spinner as he took only seven wickets from nine matches, averaging in excess of 40.
