Some heat relief, isolated showers in Maryland through Saturday

Clouds will take a significant edge off the intense heat from Thursday. We'll see clouds linger into Saturday with a few isolated to widely scattered showers. Most of the weekend looks rain-free despite some rain chances. A weak cold front has pushed south of the area and that has brought in some much welcomed relief from the intense heat today into Saturday. Expect mostly cloudy skies with moderate to high levels of humidity. The highest humidity levels will remain across central and southern Maryland with more of a break from the humidity across northeastern Maryland. There is the possibility of a stray shower south of Baltimore City today. A better chance of isolated to widely scattered showers and storms tonight into Saturday as the boundary slowly lifts back to the north. High temperatures today and Saturday will be in the middle to upper 80s in and around the Baltimore metro. Northeastern Maryland will see highs in the lower to middle 80s. While humidity levels will back down across northeastern Maryland today, very tropical humidity will return across the area tonight and spread across the entire state of Maryland Saturday. Fortunately clouds will limit how hot we get Saturday during this stretch of very high humidity. Heat and humidity briefly return to the area Sunday. Expect a mixture of clouds and sunshine with much higher temperatures. Highs will climb into the lower 90s with heat index values reaching 95° to 100°. A cold front will approach the area during the afternoon and evening hours sparking off isolated strong to severe thunderstorms. We are not expecting many thunderstorms to form, but the ones that do have the capability of producing damaging winds, lightning, and heavy downpours. Any storms should exit by late Sunday evening as skies begin to clear and humidity levels will begin to drop toward sunrise Monday. Some of the best weather of the entire summer is coming to Maryland Monday through Wednesday of next week. High pressure to our north will push the intense levels of heat and humidity to our south for a few days. Monday and Tuesday look like the most comfortable days of this stretch with partly to mostly sunny skies, very low humidity, and comfortably warm temperatures. Highs Monday and Tuesday will be in the middle 80s. Overnight lows will even dip into the 60s for some better sleeping weather. Wednesday will be a transition day as winds veer out of the south bringing in more muggy air. Even though Wednesday looks more humid, the humidity levels don't look unbearable. Highs will top out in the upper 80s. Tough heat and humidity will be returning to Maryland late next week into next weekend. Look for tropical levels of humidity with potentially even hotter afternoon high temperatures in the middle 90s. Heat index values will once again climb to above 100°. In addition to the brutal heat and humidity returning, strong to severe storms may also return to the area, especially during the afternoon and evening hours next Friday through next weekend.

Weekend thunderstorms may pose danger to life as Met Office warning upgraded

Thunderstorms set to batter the UK this weekend could pose a danger to life in some areas, the Met Office has said as it issued an amber weather warning. Heavy rain with some thunder could create 'fast flowing or deep floodwater, causing a danger to life' in the amber warning area, which spans the east and South East of England, including London, between 4am and 11am on Saturday. Various yellow thunderstorm warnings are also in place in the UK between Friday morning and Saturday night. Between 20 and 40mm of rain could fall in one hour in the amber warning zone, going up to 70 to 100mm in just a few hours where heavy downpours persist. 'Torrential rain, with thunderstorms in places, could lead to some significant surface water flooding during Saturday morning', the Met Office said. An ongoing deluge may cause 'significant impacts' if it hits 'more urban areas'. It is likely that homes and businesses will flood and that flooding could happen quickly, the Met Office said, adding that some communities may be cut off if roads flood. Buildings could be damaged by floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds, it added. It is the first amber warning to be issued for London since January last year. The first yellow thunderstorm warning comes into force at 11am on Friday until 8pm in the East Midlands, north-east England and Yorkshire. Another yellow thunderstorm warning runs from 9pm to midnight on Friday in east and south-east England. ⚠️⚠️ Amber weather warning issued ⚠️⚠️ Torrential, thundery rain across parts of southeast England Saturday 0400 – 1100 Latest info 👉 Stay #WeatherAware ⚠️ — Met Office (@metoffice) July 18, 2025 The warning expands to most of England and some parts of southern Scotland from midnight to 9pm on Saturday. Forecasters said these storms could 'cause disruption in places'. 'Areas of heavy rain with embedded thunderstorms will move north-westwards across a large swathe of central and eastern England through Friday night into Saturday', the Met Office said. It added: 'Rain will likely be torrential in places, bringing 20-30mm in less than an hour, with 60-90 mm in two to three hours possible in a few places.' Frequent lightning and localised surface water flooding are also possible. Much of the UK will have a warm and humid start to Friday before the thunderstorms move in. East Anglia and the South East will see 'notably high' temperatures – reaching 28C to 30C widely, and a corridor between London and the east coast could see them push up to 32C. Chief Met Office meteorologist, Andy Page, said: 'Intense rainfall will impact parts of the UK as thunderstorms move in from France. 'A range of severe weather warnings have been issued, including an Amber warning covering South East England and London. 'The intense rainfall could lead to surface water flooding as well as frequent lightning and hail too. 'The situation is evolving, and warnings may be changed or added.' He added: 'This weekend is expected to be busy on the roads as more schools in England and Wales break up for the summer holidays, so it's important people keep up-to-date with the very latest forecast. 'There will be spells of more pleasant weather in parts of the UK through the weekend, with some sunny spells in between systems as they move through.' The persistent cloud and rain will keep the temperatures on Saturday relatively low. Maximum temperatures will mainly stay in the high teens to low 20Cs, but brighter spells in the south could reach the mid to high 20s. The most recent amber warning issued for London was for wind on January 2 2024, during Storm Henk which swept through central parts of England and Wales. The AA has urged drivers to prepare for disruption and take care on the roads. The breakdown service said: 'This amount of rain is well over a month's worth for a normal July. 'As well as heavy rain, impacts from frequent lightning, gusty winds and large hail are also likely. 'These storms could affect some of the popular holiday routes for early departures on this year's summer getaway. 'While localised flash flooding and the sudden appearance of surface water are the usual dangers associated with summer heavy rain, the potential for slippery road surfaces at junctions and roundabouts is a hidden menace.'

Pittsburgh weather won't be nearly as hot or humid as the weekend begins

Humidity levels will be lower today with dew points dipping to the mid to low 60s, and you'll feel the difference. WEATHER LINKS: Current Conditions | School Closings & Delays | Submit Your Weather Photos The weekend is actually looking pretty good when it comes to having outdoor plans. Yes, there's going to be a chance for rain each day, but no day will be a washout. Please don't cancel any outdoor activities due to potential rain, as things are setting up to mostly be dry when you probably need it to be dry. Today's rain 'window' is probably the largest of the weekend, with rain showers rolling through as soon as 10 this morning. Isolated storms will also be possible after 3 this afternoon. The further south you are, the higher the chance for rain, with places north of Pittsburgh seeing only the tiniest of rain chances. Everyone south of I-70 should see some rain today, with the best chance for rain, including a brief downpour, happening late this afternoon. Humidity levels have come down, though, so I don't expect we will see anything like we saw over the past couple of weeks, with flash flooding being fairly common. If outside, you'll also notice the dip in humidity today. I have Pittsburgh barely getting back to the 80s today, and there is a chance the city doesn't hit the 80-degree mark. Skies will be cloudy to mostly cloudy today with light winds coming in out of the south. Saturday is looking dry for most of the day, with the best chance for rain coming after sunset. Saturday highs should hit the mid-80s with partly cloudy skies. Saturday morning should feel fantastic with lows dipping into the 60s for the second morning in a row. Sunday will likely see our best chance for rain before sunrise, with a cluster of storms expected to rumble through. Storm chances should linger into the afternoon on Sunday as we await a cool front sliding through. Sunday highs should be in the low 80s. Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday are all looking dry to me. Monday is looking pleasant with low humidity levels and highs in the low 80s. We will start to warm up on Tuesday (highs in the mid-80s) and Wednesday (highs in the upper 80s). Rain and storm chances return on Thursday and Friday next week, with temperatures continuing to warm up, too. I have Thursday's high temperature hitting 90°.
