The Compiler Is Having Its Punch Card Moment

When I say the compiler is having its punch card moment, I mean it in the most literal and historic sense possible. I want this to be remembered—quoted, even—because we are living through something that's not just a technical shift, but a cultural and economic one. This moment deserves a sentence that describes it at its core. And this is the sentence I find to be most fitting.
I grew up around code. As a child, I played with my father's discarded punch cards, not knowing at the time that those perforated sheets were how people talked to machines. Each line of logic was represented by holes in the cards, and every bug meant waiting a full day to find out what went wrong. Those early systems made programming feel more like praying—structured offerings, delivered to a silent god who answered on its own schedule. The people who knew how to speak that language were few, and the barriers were high. Still, it was magical.
Then came the compiler. FORTRAN, Pascal, C++, Java—languages that introduced a layer of abstraction between humans and hardware. We no longer had to manage memory or punch holes. We could think in logic, in instructions, in code that resembled human speech. It didn't just accelerate computing. It accelerated inclusion. Millions of people, myself included, found careers in technology because the compiler made programming more accessible and less punishing. It was still technical, still formal, but it was closer to us. Closer to how we think.
And now, here we are again—at the edge of another leap. But this one isn't just a productivity boost. It's a full shift in who gets to build and how. Today, I'm programming again. Not in FORTRAN or C++, but in English. Or Guyanese patwah. Or Portuguese. I'm describing what I want, and the machine understands. Sometimes it gives me Python. Sometimes it gives me a working dashboard. Sometimes it gives me a fully edited video, or a song, or a policy memo written in the tone of a specific executive. I'm not just programing software as the only work product—I'm programming digital everything, by just talking.
This is what I mean when I say the compiler is having its punch card moment. The compiler once opened programming to a new class of builders. Now, compilers themselves are being absorbed into something even larger—models that don't need us to learn their rules, because they've learned how to use our natural language, to convert it to programming code. Natural language is no longer just the way we describe ideas. It's now the way we execute them. The machine isn't waiting for perfect syntax anymore. It's listening. And it's responding. In every language, every tone, every modality.
We're not just telling computers what to do. We're asking them to create with us. A single sentence can now generate an image that would've required a camera crew. A few lines of context can generate an original soundtrack. A teacher in Kenya can write a quiz in Swahili and generate five versions of it, complete with answer keys and illustrations. A child can describe a story and see it animated in minutes. What used to require a team, a budget, and technical training now requires nothing more than a voice, an idea and a connection.
If the compiler brought us into the age of software, then this new era is bringing us into the age of everything. And just like the punch card became obsolete—not overnight, but unmistakably—the compiler as we know it is becoming background noise. It's still there, but it's no longer the bottleneck. Just as punch cards gave way to compiled code, compiled code is giving way to prompt-driven creation. The output is expanding. The speed is increasing. The need for specialization is dropping. And the number of people who can now participate is exploding. Generative models are the new compilers, and the programming languages of today are the ones we're all already fluent in.
This is not about code. This is about power. When language itself becomes the interface, creation becomes a human right, not a technical privilege. For the first time in modern computing, someone with zero engineering background can make software, media, audio, design, documents, campaigns, simulations and conversations—just by describing them. Not only has the circle of creators expanded but the definition of "creator" itself has changed.
In this moment, executives must understand that the entire structure of digital production is being rewritten. Those whose instinct is to centralize, to govern, to wait for an 'AI strategy' to be finalized will lose to those who embrace the messiness of experimentation and the chaos of fast feedback. Because the people who are already fluent in language are already building. It's not just that your employees can use AI—it's that they no longer need you to give them permission. And that will either terrify you or transform your company depending on what you do next.
I've lived long enough to see three paradigms: when we spoke to machines, when we learned to speak with them, and now when they've learned to speak like us. This is not a moment of enhancement. It's a moment of inversion. And it deserves to be remembered the same way we remember the moment the compiler changed everything.
So I'll suggest it again, and I hope it sticks: The compiler is having its punch card moment. And if we're paying attention, we'll build a future where everyone gets to speak—and everyone gets to build.

AI has become an expected part of every new phone launching in 2025 and not just in the form of Gemini Live or Circle to Search. The cameras on many phones have AI baked deep into the heart of the experience too. I was taken aback by the Honor 400 Pro's image-to-video AI tool when it brought my dad back to life, while the Pixel 9 Pro focused more on generative AI to add new elements to your Images or even create new scenes out of nowhere. But the iPhones have always focused first and foremost on delivering some of the best image quality you can get in a camera phone, and as a professional photographer I want to see that same dedication to taking better photos when the iPhone 17 launches in September. It's not that I don't like AI. I do, when it's applied properly. I like ChatGPT's and Google Gemini's ability to answer questions in a conversational way, I like Adobe's use of AI for object removal in Photoshop and as a horror movie fan I'm genuinely excited about the terrifying visions I've seen created using AI. But AI can also be a crutch for mobile companies to lean on in order to make up for shortfalls elsewhere. I liked the Pixel 9 Pro, but its camera hardware hadn't been changed since the last model. The new generative AI tools became the new imaging-focused features for the upgrade. The Xiaomi 14 Ultra's camera blew me away with its variable aperture that created stunning starbursts in night time images. And yet the more recent 15 Ultra ditched that in favor of software alternatives that simply don't offer the same results. The Xiaomi 14 Ultra had an amazing variable aperture built into its camera, but on the more recent Xiaomi 15 Ultra that was replaced with a "software solution" that simply didn't do the same thing. Andrew Lanxon/CNET Apple's iPhones have always impressed with their image quality. Back in 2019 I took the iPhone 11 Pro on a photography road trip instead of my usual Canon DSLR, and I frequently use my iPhone 16 Pro as my professional camera when carrying a bigger setup isn't feasible. Apple's image quality is top notch, with the phones typically producing natural image tones and less heavy-handed image processing than many of its rivals, resulting in authentic looking images. Its ProRaw image format and ProRes and Log video codecs are aimed at getting the best quality from the cameras. Apple has invested in core image quality technologies, not simply used AI to make up for any hardware shortcomings. It's why Apple has won the hearts of creatives the world over and why the iPhone is often seen as one of, if not the best camera phones for professional or enthusiastic photo and video shooters. And I'm not saying the iPhone occupies some AI-free utopia. Apple has been a pioneer in applying machine learning to overcome limitations of tiny smartphone cameras, such as its Deep Fusion imaging technology that captures multiple exposures and blends them into a final, evenly-exposed image. And I suppose to a lesser extent its Portrait Lighting tool from 2017's iPhone 8 that used depth maps and algorithms to create artificial lighting effects. But these are arguably tools to enhance an existing image, and I'm worried that the next iPhone's camera will be all about how you can generate entirely new scenes without even having to step outside your house. The huge rise in popularity of compact cameras shows that people still care about taking real photos. Real cameras taking real moments with your real friends. Actual sunset colors casting across golden sandy beaches, not an AI's generic interpretation of what a beach looks like. AI has its place and I'm braced for Apple's September event to be extremely AI-focused. As AI seeps deeper into our phone experience and Apple pushes on with its AI strategy, I'm concerned that the company could make rash decisions with its imaging experience in order to try and justify the existence of Apple Intelligence. But this shouldn't come at the expense of core image quality, so I also want to hear about how I can take the iPhone 17 deep into the heart of my home country of Scotland and take the most beautiful photos of the incredible landscape in front of me.

Ripple Exec on Why XRP Ledger Is ‘Uniquely Suited' for Real World Asset Tokenization

Ripple Senior Vice President Markus Infanger, the head of RippleX, argues the XRP Ledger (XRPL) is built for the next phase of real-world-asset tokenization and says today's SPV-heavy market is only a bridge to 'native issuance.' From immobilization to native issuance In an Aug. 12 blog post, Infanger draws a direct line from the 1970s shift in capital markets — when Euroclear and DTCC immobilized paper certificates in vaults while moving ownership records to be electronic — to today's tokenization stack. He says Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs) play a comparable, transitional role now: legally familiar wrappers that hold the off-ledger asset while issuing a tokenized representation on a network. The model is 'clunky' and centralized, he acknowledges, but useful as infrastructure, standards and policy mature. It is, in his words, 'scaffolding,' not the end state. Infanger says the ultimate goal is fully digital assets where the token itself is the legal record, rules are built into the code, trades settle instantly and liquidity flows freely across markets without middlemen. Why Infanger says XRPL stands out Infanger's case for XRPL centers on protocol-level capabilities intended for financial use from the outset, which he argues reduce integration work and operational risk for institutions moving from SPVs toward native issuance: On-ledger exchange (built-in DEX): XRPL includes a native order-book exchange, allowing issued tokens to trade directly on the ledger without external smart-contract routers. For tokenized RWAs, that can mean immediate listing and peer-to-peer execution with fewer moving parts. Near-instant, low-cost settlement: The ledger's consensus design targets fast finality and minimal transaction fees, a combination Infanger says is critical for high-volume instruments — such as tokenized T-bills — where carry, fees and operational latency matter. XLS-30 automated market maker (AMM): This standard introduces on-ledger liquidity pools that algorithmically set prices based on inventory, so tokens can trade even when a matching order isn't present. For RWA markets that need continuous two-way prices — rather than episodic RFQs — on-ledger AMMs can help stabilize liquidity. XLS-65 lending vaults: A proposed standard for protocol-level borrowing and lending. Instead of building bespoke smart contracts, issuers could enable secured credit (for example, borrowing against a tokenized note or real-estate claim) with rules defined at the standard level, aiding auditability and risk controls. Programmable compliance and custody hooks: Because issuance, exchange, and settlement live in the base protocol, Infanger argues that rule sets (whitelists, transfer restrictions, disclosures) and custody workflows can be embedded directly into asset lifecycles — supporting regulatory alignment as volumes scale. Composability: With exchange, liquidity, lending and issuance primitives designed to interoperate, tokens can move through primary issuance, secondary trading, collateralization and settlement without stitching together multiple external systems. Infanger says that's the path to 'embedded' liquidity rather than fragmented silos. Early signs of native issuance To illustrate the direction of travel, Infanger cites a pilot by Ctrl Alt with Dubai's land regulator to mint property ownership records on XRPL. By recording titles natively, the scheme aims to streamline transfers, improve auditability and embed supervisory visibility. Ctrl Alt also plans to integrate Ripple Custody for secure storage of tokenized deeds— an example of how ledger-level functionality and institutional-grade custody can be paired in production. Why SPVs aren't going away — yet Infanger says SPVs remain vital for institutions bound by current laws, audits, and system tests, comparing them to 1970s immobilization that paved the way for digitization and, eventually, fully digital assets with built-in compliance and settlement. The pitch to institutions Infanger urges banks, asset managers, and treasurers to use SPVs for now but plan for native issuance. He believes a public, finance-focused ledger with built-in exchange, liquidity and credit standards will speed the shift and make on-ledger assets work like mainstream instruments. Is Lucid Preparing to Battle Rivian? The Gravity X Concept Suggests an Off-Road Trim Is in the Works

Lucid revealed the Gravity X concept today ahead of its public debut at this weekend's P. The concept features off-road accessories including a sleek roof rack, protective skid plates, and all-terrain tires. The Gravity X also wears orange accents, tow hooks integrated into the bumpers, and etched topographical maps of Big Sur and Death Valley on the hood. Although supply chain constraints have slowed the rollout of Lucid's second vehicle, the Gravity, the mid-size electric SUV represents a significant moment for the nascent automaker. Not only did the 1070-hp Dream Edition become the quickest SUV we've tested over the quarter-mile run, but the Grand Touring is capable of up to 450 miles of range and packs possibly the roomiest three-row configuration on the market. Now Lucid seems to be weighing an expansion of the Gravity's abilities, revealing the off-road-focused Gravity X concept during Monterey Car Week. The Gravity X, which Lucid wants you to pronounce as "Gravity Cross," is so far just a show car, but it looks awfully production-ready, and could hint that Lucid is looking to swipe some customers from its closest three-row competition, the outdoorsy Rivian R1S. To that end, the Gravity X tweaks the sleek SUV's design to make it more capable when getting off the beaten path. The concept sits higher than a standard Gravity and features a wider track, while the restyled front and rear bumpers provide better approach and departure angles. The unique six-spoke wheels are wrapped in all-terrain tires, and Lucid also fitted skid plates to shield the underside of the SUV. Tow hooks are integrated into the front and rear bumpers in case of any off-road mishaps. Along with the chunky, brushed metal silver pieces in the bumpers, the other most noticeable change is the cargo rack perched atop the roof, which houses three thin LED spotlights. The Gravity X is also distinguished by orange accents, which appear in the tow hooks, wheel spokes, and throughout the interior. The orange contrasts against the subtle Astral Drift tan paint, which is also accented by topographical maps of Big Sur and Death Valley that are etched into the SUV's hood. The look is completed by Gravity X branding in the front bumper and on the doors, while the side sills display the coordinates for Pebble Beach. Lucid says the concept is based on the Grand Touring trim, providing 828 horsepower from two electric motors and launching from zero to 60 mph in a claimed 3.4 seconds thanks to all-wheel drive. The Gravity X concept will make its public debut on the Concept Lawn at the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance this Sunday, August 17, and we wouldn't be too shocked if a more off-road-oriented trim joins the Gravity lineup in the next couple of years.
