Sungai Batu Archaeology Researcher Receives Kedah Maal Hijrah Award
ALOR SETAR, June 27 (Bernama) -- Sungai Batu, Lembah Bujang archaeological Prof Datuk Dr Mokhtar Saidin was named Kedah Tokoh Maal Hijrah 1447H today.
Dr. Mokhtar, 62, who was born in Kampung Bukit Pekan, Kampar in Perak, is the key pioneer behind the discovery of the ancient Kedah civilisation that has been established in Sungai Batu since the 8th century BC.
He began his early education at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Bukit Pekan and continued his studies at the Anglo-Chinese Secondary School Ipoh, before pursuing a matriculation programme at the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and subsequently continuing his studies at Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in the fields of geology and archaeology.
After completing his Master's degree in Archaeology at USM, he continued his studies at the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) level in the same field at USM, reflecting his high and deep commitment and interest in the development of archaeological knowledge, particularly in the context of history and civilisation in this region.
"When I was informed about this award, it was unexpected because these tokoh (figures) awards are usually given to religious leaders. This is the first time recognition has been awarded to an academic conducting research related to archaeology and history, so I feel it is something very good for the state and country.
"This award is something good to see because the field of knowledge is the foundation for the country's progress and character of its people…if there is no such recognition, there would be less of an approach to recognise scholars who conduct research in other fields," he said after the Kedah Maal Hijrah celebration ceremony today.
Dr Mokhtar said there is still much to be done, including developing Sungai Batu as a product so that all citizens know about the identity of the state and country, in addition to making it a source of income for Kedah.
"I am also still producing globally impactful high-ranking publications about Sungai Batu in addition to educating students who are interested in learning about this civilisation and history... I also give motivational talks to other agencies.
"Furthermore, we have also succeeded in proving to the world that what Al-Kindi (801-873) referred to as the best iron in the world came from Kalah, which was the name used for the state of Kedah at that time, and Al-Biruni (973-1050) stated that all the iron in Yemen and India also originated from Kalah," he said.

Six Penang Fishermen Receive New Boats, Engines Under SIMP Scheme
GEORGE TOWN, June 27 (Bernama) -- Six fishermen from the southern part of Penang have received new boats and engines under the Social Impact Management Plan (SIMP) scheme, which gives them renewed hope as full-time fishermen. One of the recipients, Hashimi Hamzah, 50, from Sungai Batu, described it as an 'early birthday gift' ahead of his 50th birthday on July 3, especially since his previous boat was destroyed in a storm six months ago. He said his old seven-metre boat with a 60-horsepower engine had been with him since 2002, allowing him to go to sea at a slow speed but without GPS or sonar like newer boats. 'The new boat is an unexpected blessing. It means a lot to me because all this while I had to work on other people's boats as a crew to earn a living. 'Now, I can go out to sea on my own again. My nets are ready, and with this new boat, I can fish farther, faster, and more safely,' he said in a statement issued by Silicon Island Development Sdn Bhd today. The other recipients are Hamdan Bakar, 59; Mohd Fitri Che Ros, 46; Muhammad Hidayat Che Ros, 36; See Bak Chooi, 65; and Lai Poh Liang, 64. Hamdan, from Teluk Kumbar, said he never thought he would one day own a brand-new boat complete with an engine. The upgraded size and power of the boat now allow him to cover a wider fishing area and increase his income. 'If it were up to my own means, I might only be able to afford a 40-horsepower engine. This new boat and engine are a huge relief. Now I can fish with peace of mind,' said Hamdan, who has been going out to sea solo since he was young. Meanwhile, See, from Gertak Sanggul, said the new boat gives him renewed confidence to return to sea after his old vessel became unsafe to use.

Twin Oil Platform Sculpture Made Of 7,000 CDs Draws Crowd At HLN 2025
JOHOR BAHRU, June 27 (Bernama) -- A striking sculpture by the Pengerang Municipal Council, featuring a twin oil platform structure made from 7,000 compact discs and standing 5.5 metres tall, has become a key attraction at the 2025 National Landscape Day (HLN) celebration here. Landscape architect Nur Asilah Abu Hassan, 33, said the piece, titled Letusan Alam was completed in about three weeks. It draws inspiration from oil rig platforms, swirling water, and fish scales - elements symbolising dynamic energy in the quest for natural resources beneath the earth. 'This sculpture reflects the harmony between industrial strength and natural beauty, while capturing the spirit and identity of the coastal Pengerang community,' she told Bernama.
