J&K student thrashed in Nagpur; students association seeks Fadnavis' intervention
A student from Jammu and Kashmir studying at a pharmacy college in Nagpur was thrashed by a group of local residents, police said on Tuesday (April 29, 2025)
A motive was not yet clear, they said.
The incident took place on Sunday (April 27, 2025) evening in the Kamptee area of the Maharashtra city, but no complaint has been received so far from the victim, said a senior police official.
Explaining the sequence of events, he said two first-year Bachelor of Pharmacy students, hailing from Doda town and Jammu, were returning to their hostel when one of them went to answer nature's call, while the other stood on the roadside waiting for him.
At the same time, a group of local residents came to the spot and started questioning the student standing on the roadside and sought to know from where he had come. As he was unable to answer their questions, the residents started thrashing him, said the official.

The other student returned and informed the residents that both were students of a local college. After this, the locals allowed them to go, he said.
One of the pupils later informed about the incident to J&K Students Association office-bearer Nasir Khuehami, who posted about it on his 'X' account and urged Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to intervene in the matter.
Talking to PTI, the student ruled out a hate motive behind the attack and said it was their first year in Nagpur and they did not know the area, where the incident took place, well.

The student said the incident took place at around 6.15 p.m. when they stopped at a road in Kamptee. Two to three persons came to the spot and asked them who they were and from where they hailed.
The student said he told them they hailed from Jammu and Kashmir, but "anti-social elements" started beating them.
Meanwhile, national convenor of the J&K Students Association Khuehami, in a post on social media site 'X', said a Jammu and Kashmir student was brutally assaulted in Nagpur.
"The student from Doda area of J&K was brutally thrashed without any rhyme & reason by fringe elements," he said.
Mr. Khuehami said according to the victim, two to three goons attacked him.
"Some of the assailants knocked him down and started punching him on the face and stomach, and hitting him on his knees. He was slapped 8-9 times on the face, neck, back, and arms," the student leader wrote.
Mr. Khuehami requested Chief Minister Fadnavis, who holds the home portfolio, to intervene in the matter and take strict action against the culprits.
Mr. Khuehami said after he brought to the notice of the Maharashtra CMO about the Kamptee incident, he got a call from IGP (Law & Order) Manoj Kumar Sharma, who took details about the incident from him and also the phone number of the victim.
He maintained that the IGP assured him strict legal action will be taken against the culprits.

Therefore, we request you to please make Virat Kohli and his team members accused in the FIR of this tragedy and take action," the complaint read. However, Bengaluru Police clarified that while the complaint has been received, it will not result in a fresh FIR at this stage. 'The complaint will be examined as part of the ongoing investigation under an already registered case," a senior police official said, adding that the matter remains under detailed review. Bengaluru stampede: KSCA secretary and treasurer tender resignations
The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) secretary, A Shankar, and treasurer, ES Jairam, announced their resignations on Saturday, three days after the tragic loss of 11 lives during the felicitation event for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium after their IPL 2025 victory on Tuesday. A day after the KSCA and RCB had approached the Karnataka High Court in connection with the First Information Reports (FIR) filed against them in connection with the stampede, the Karnataka cricket association secretary and treasurer announced their resignations through a joint statement. 'This is to inform that due to the unforeseen and unfortunate events that have unfolded in the last two days and though our role was very limited, but owing moral responsibility, we wish to state that last night we have tendered our resignation to our respective posts as the Secretary and Treasurer of the Karnataka State Cricket Association, by way of a letter dated 06.06.2025 to the President of Karnataka State Cricket Association,' the statement read. On Thursday, the Karnataka High Court had taken suo motu cognisance of the incident after receiving an initial briefing from Advocate General Shashikiran Shetty. The court has directed the state to submit a status report by June 10, the next date of hearing. A single-judge bench of Justice S R Krishna Kumar granted interim protection from arrest to senior KSCA officials, contingent on their cooperation with the police investigation. Meanwhile, the Bengaluru city police on Friday arrested four people, including the RCB marketing head Nikhil Sosale, as they attempted to board a flight from the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru. Besides Sosale, Sunil Mathew, Sumanth and Kiran Kumar of DNA Entertainment Private Limited were arrested and produced before the magistrate and sent to judicial custody for 14 days. Sosale's legal team challenged his arrest on Friday, claiming it was politically motivated and ordered by the Chief Minister without a proper investigation. However, the court denied interim relief, deciding to hear arguments from the state before making a decision. Meanwhile, the KSCA stated in its petition that its involvement was confined to renting out the stadium and assisting with government permissions. ANI Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Srinagar: Hurriyat leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq on Friday said that if the Prime Minister truly seeks to reduce the 'Dil Ki Doori' then humanitarian steps like release of prisoners need to be taken immediately. Mirwaiz while addressing a Friday gathering here at historic Jama Masjid in downtown Srinagar said that train links are a welcome, but it is the human links that truly matter and endure. On the eve of Eid-ul-Adha, Mirwaiz said that for thousands of families in J&K, the festival brings no joy. 'Their sons, husbands, fathers and brothers have been incarcerated for years—many without trial—in jails within and outside J&K. And each passing day, more of our youth are detained,' said Mirwaiz. The Hurriyat chief said that all such prisoners, including political leadership, remain in the prayers and thoughts of the people. Mirwaiz urged Government of India that a goodwill gesture be made on the occasion of Eid, by releasing these prisoners. 'If the Prime Minister truly seeks to reduce the 'dil ki doori' (distance of hearts) which he often mentions in his speeches, then such humanitarian steps are the real way forward. Train links are welcome, but it is the human links that truly matter and endure," said Mirwaiz. The Hurriyat leader also condemned the tragic and inhuman killing of 30-year-old Zubair Bhat of Ali Kadal, Srinagar, who was working in New Delhi. "The incident is deeply disturbing and unacceptable. Zubair's custodial-like death—allegedly at the hands of Delhi police as claimed by his family—has brought back haunting memories of such deaths and raised serious concerns regarding the safety and security of Kashmiris residing or working in different parts of India," said Mirwaiz. The Hurriyat leader said that the killing has sent shockwaves through the community and added to the prevailing fear and anxiety among the thousands of Kashmiri students, professionals, traders, and labourers living outside J&K. 'After the recent Pahalgam incident, Kashmiris across the country are increasingly facing hostility. And now, an innocent young trader has been killed in cold blood. How long will this go on?' Mirwaiz asked. The Hurriyat leader urged the Government of India and the Union Territory administration to fulfill their constitutional responsibility and ensure the safety, security, and dignity of all Kashmiri citizens, especially those outside the region. 'The silence and inaction only embolden those targeting Kashmiris,' he also made a heartfelt appeal to civil rights organisations, writers, intellectuals, and conscientious citizens of India to raise their voice against "the growing onslaught on Kashmiris and to stand up in solidarity with the victims of such brutality."
