Gavin and Stacey's Larry Lamb says he's not averse to penning poems

BBC News4 hours ago
Gavin and Stacey star Larry Lamb is having the rhyme of his life after taking up poetry following a gap of several decades. The actor, who has also written a novel and autobiography, started scribbling stanzas in 1983, but after a poet friend encouraged him he decided to put pen to paper again.Larry, who also said he is 1% Welsh, said he loves the process of writing as he gets to be in charge. "I started writing poetry in the 80s, it just came right out of the blue. A whole string of poems about my life and the way I saw things," the 77-year-old said.
He said that in 2020 he found a file of them in the attic and showed them to a poet friend. "And he was really impressed and said, 'We have got to do something with these'. "So cut to quite recently and I started to write poems again. A lot of them about the same period in my life." On 27 September he will be reading his work for the first time, along with some of his favourite poems from his childhood, at Hereford Military History Festival."So I'm going to be close to Wales," he said.Larry said he surprised himself when he started writing in 1983."But now I have got a lot more experience, a lot more time in life," he told Lucy Owen on BBC Radio Wales.
"It's just a fascinating procedure making poetry out of life and comparing the way I write things now to the way I wrote them in 1983. "I'm absolutely loving it. Hopefully I'll be following up the book tour with a tour all over the place telling stories with poetry."He will be promoting his novel All Wrapped Up with a number of UK dates from September to December - visiting Barry on December 2.He said he would go to Barry beach - the scene of many memorable Gavin & Stacey scenes - for a swim. Asked if he would be wearing a wetsuit in the winter water, he said: "My birthday suit. I'll hand out masks so people can just shut down on the visuals."

Andy Carroll reveals he and girlfriend Lou Teasdale are BACK ON as he vows to cut alcohol to save their relationship after boozy rows

Andy Carroll has revealed he is back with girlfriend Lou Teasdale, following a brief split earlier this week. The couple split this this week after a series of rows, with initial reports claiming the footballer, 36, dumped the make-up artist, 41, after becoming fed up with her high maintenance behaviour. However, Daily Mail exclusively revealed on Wednesday it was in fact Lou who called off the relationship. Andy has now vowed to cut down on alcohol in a bid to save their relationship after boozy rows as he confirmed the pair are trying 'to work through their difficulties'. He told The Sun on Sunday: 'I love Lou and I love her family. We row like any couple.' Referring to his divorce from wife Billi Mucklow, who he shares three children with, Andy added: 'Things have been difficult for me and I'm going through a divorce. 'Some of our rows have been about alcohol, as Lou has been teetotal for 14 years and I have a beer or wine at dinner and a drink after the game, but it's not a problem in my life. 'We're better off together and we're trying to work through our difficulties.' The pair, who were together for just over a year, unfollowed each other on social media and Andy wiped all trace of Lou from his Instagram. They now follow each other on Instagram and have added their loved-up snaps back to their pages. On Wednesday, a source told the Daily Mail: 'It was Lou who ended her relationship with Andy, she walked away a few days ago, it was very much her choice to end their romance. 'She isn't interested in pointing the finger or blaming him and hoped to deal with their split in private, before he blocked her on Instagram and deleted their photos together. 'Lou is very upset by how everything has played out and the arguments between them were especially difficult for her to go through. 'However, Andy wants Lou back and flew to Ibiza via private jet on Tuesday just to find her, even though he has no idea where she's staying. 'He will think it's a romantic gesture but for Lou, she's unimpressed and just wants to be away with her family, she's not interested in any of his attempts at a reconciliation now. 'All she has done all year is love and support Andy, her feelings haven't gone away, but Lou has to protect herself now and ending the relationship is the only way to move forward.' The father-of-five returned to the UK with Dagenham & Redbridge last month after a two-year spell in France. The couple's last public outing was at an Oasis gig at the end of July, where they packed on the PDA, proving they were still together. The date night came after the ex footballer was interrogated about the arguments with his make-up artist lover in a restaurant and at their hotel on the Greek party island, The Sun on Sunday reports. Speaking about the first incident, a worker at the Nikolus Tavern told the newspaper: 'He seemed very drunk and furious with his partner. 'He was using very bad words. It was improper behaviour. The woman looked very upset.' According to the restaurant worker, police arrived and took the ex-Liverpool, Newcastle United and England striker aside for a chat, before he was later allowed back to girlfriend Lou. 'Police spoke to him. He was allowed to return, and the couple left after paying for their meal. Andy was very calm when the police arrived — he stood up and spoke to them outside the restaurant', the restaurant worker added. Just hours later, cops were called again by hotel staff following reports of damage in their room. Daily Mail understands that the former England forward - once Britain's most expensive Premier League footballer when bought by Liverpool from Newcastle for £35million - was taken to the police station for questioning, but he was not arrested and no further action was taken. The incident was confirmed by a hotel employee, who claimed Andy broke the door. That night, Lou left the hotel and spent the night at Soho Roc House. A joint statement from the couple given to The Sun said: 'Whilst having a private dinner in a restaurant on a quiet holiday in Mykonos, we had a heated discussion of the sort that most couples have had on occasion. It quickly became apparent to the police that there was no reason for them to be there. 'We went outside the restaurant with them together as they insisted they wanted to 'look after' us. 'As far as we are concerned, the situation has been blown out of all proportion by an interested member of the public. No one was arrested and no one was charged with anything. We are very happy, in love and looking forward to our future together and we are disappointed that a private disagreement has become a public matter.' The pair began dating last year after he separated from his TOWIE star wife Billi Mucklow last September. Andy and Billi called it quits divorce after two years of turbulent marriage, the footballer confirmed last year. In 2022, their wedding was almost called off when Andy was pictured drunkenly passed out in bed with two women in Dubai on his stag do. Billi forgave him after one of the women insisted nothing sexual happened. Less than two years after their nuptials, the couple's marriage was over - with Andy confirming they had started divorce proceedings after 'a hard few months for our family'. Andy said in a statement at the time: 'Billi and I have privately separated earlier this year and we are under way with our divorce proceedings'. 'It has been a hard few months for our family and we continue to move forward amicably for our children.' The former couple have three children together Arlo, Wolf, and Marvel Mae and she also raises his two children Emilie Rose, 15, and Lucas, 14 from his past relationship.

After a stint on Broadway, PATERSON JOSEPH had to work on a building site

Paterson Joseph is best known for appearing in hit TV shows such as Casualty, Vigil, Noughts + Crosses and as Alan Johnson in Peep Show, alongside the big-screen film Wonka, writes York Membery. The 61-year-old has also written a novel, The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho, and a children's book. Joseph has a 22-year-old son and lives alone in London. What did your parents teach you about money? I was one of six children and grew up in a three-bedroom flat in Willesden, north-west London. My dad, now 91, was a plasterer and my mum, now 89, worked in a biscuit factory. They often had more than one job to help make ends meet. They taught me money could be the source of conflict so having it can be problematic, but not having it is even more so. Therefore being somewhere in the middle financially has always appealed to me. I just want to know I've got enough if I need something. Have you ever struggled to make ends meet? Yes. In the 1990s after spending four months in Hamlet with Ralph Fiennes on Broadway, it took me a while to re-establish myself as an actor back in the UK. So I worked on a building site for £70 a day until the next job came, but would cut myself doing even the most minor jobs – for a jokey birthday present my pals gave me a hollowed-out DIY manual with a box of plasters inside. Have you ever been paid silly money? Not yet. I've appeared in a few Hollywood films made in the UK, but when big-budget US films are shot here they just pay British actors the usual UK pay rate, thus getting us cheaper. Doing adverts can be a nice earner – but I've turned down a commercial before because I couldn't convince myself I love a coffee machine like a lover! What was the best year of your financial life I appeared in 26 episodes of the American sci-fi Timeless from 2016-18, so they were pretty good years. But you have to remember while an actor may get paid £70,000 for a series, that might be their only job that year. Moreover, they've got to hand over around 25 per cent to an agent or manager before paying tax. The most expensive thing you bought for fun? I treated myself to a £200 electric ukulele after landing a big role in the BBC comedy- drama Boat Story (2023) and I still play it every day. I am no George Formby but picking it makes me very happy. What is your biggest money mistake? Getting an old Austin Maestro in my 20s. If you put the AC on it would steam up the windows, and the heating was stuck on 'high' so it was like being in a sauna in winter. Mind you, it always got me from A to B. Best money decision you have made? Becoming an actor, even though my first job, in a fringe theatre play in the 1980s, only paid £165 a week. At the time it seemed big money and I was so chuffed to be 'a working actor'. I've been lucky enough to make a proper living in the industry. It has also opened the doors to writing books and voicing animated characters I'd never have played in a live-action film because I don't resemble them. Will you pass your money down or spend it all? My son, 22, is a biochemist so I think he'll do just fine. But he's a middle-class kid who knows his parents are there to lend a hand. But there was nobody to help me cash-wise if I'd have fallen on my backside – so our mindsets differ. I'm just glad he's not following me into the crazy acting game. Do you have a pension? I pay into a private pension, and will get the state one in due course. But I love what I do, so will keep working until I'm 'retired by the profession', as they say. Do you own any property? Yes. I bought my first property, a two-bedroom house in Woking, for £58,000 in 1995. I then bought a house in Tours with my French ex-wife. After returning alone to the UK in 2016, I bought a lovely garden flat for a six-figure sum in north-west London, close to family and friends. If you were Chancellor what would you do? I'd spend money on defending the UK from our enemies. I'd also spend more on educating young people so they're better able to face the financial challenges of the future. What is your number one financial priority? Not to die in a poorhouse – hopefully my son will bail me out if that ever happens.

Gemma Collins reveals when she will marry fiancé Rami Hawash as she aims to 'try top' Jeff Bezos' $50 million wedding to Lauren Sanchez

Gemma Collins has finally confirmed her wedding plans – and has revealed she aims to make it bigger than Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez 's $50 million extravaganza. The TOWIE legend, 44, said she and fiancé Rami Hawash, 50, will wed in 2026, after being told by her astrologer it was the perfect year to get hitched. The pair got engaged for the second time four years ago, and Gemma admitted the countdown was officially on – even if the planning hasn't quite gone to schedule. She confessed she hadn't booked the venue yet and could even leave the finer details until the last minute, but promised the bash would be magical. Speaking to The Mirror she said: 'I mean, after Jeff Bezos' wedding, I've sure as hell got to try and top that one, haven't I?' Gemma went on to explain that she wanted a woodland theme with a fairytale twist, inspired by her love of Disney's Maleficent and was hoping for a 'mythical and boho' atmosphere. She added that Irish twin singers Jedward could help to bring the fantasy vision to life and she would have a starring role when she ties the knot. '[Jedward] will be singing. They'll definitely have a major role in the big day. They could be mythical creatures. I love them to death, the boys.' Gemma and Jedward have been friends for years with the Irish twins - who first found fame on The X Factor - regularly travelling to Essex to see her. They even spent Christmas and New Year together two years ago. Rami got down on one knee in the Maldives, after whisking Gemma off on a birthday holiday, which she admits took her completely by surprise. He planned a romantic sushi dinner before telling her to look out the window, where he laid lights on the beach that read: 'Will you marry me?' Rami set up an outdoor seating area and flew out hundreds of roses so petals could cover the sands where they were sitting, with the ring in a shell. Gemma gushed that it was 'beautiful' and admitted she 'had no idea' what was coming and didn't have any makeup on or even a bra, but added: 'I wouldn't change a thing.' Gemma also explained she wanted a woodland theme with a fairytale twist, inspired by her love of Disney's Maleficent and was hoping for a 'mythical and boho' atmosphere, with Jedward helping to bring the fantasy vision to life (pictured with John and Edward) Rami popped the question with a huge diamond ring, that The Daily Mail revealed is worth in excess of a staggering £200,000. Gemma has known Rami for over ten years after meeting the businessman back in 2011 and they have been engaged twice before. He had originally proposed by placing the ring in a Christmas pudding in 2013 when they first start dating. However, four weeks later, Gemma had called off the engagement. But the pair then reunited during lockdown, seven years after breaking off their original engagement. It comes after Gemma was left 'terrified' and forced to call in police after she received an 'abusive and menacing' letter to her home. A source close to Gemma told The Sun how the man behind the twisted letter detailed his strong dislike for her and talked about tracking her down. They said: 'Gemma was left shaken and very scared for her safety after she received a threatening and abusive letter from a man expressing his extreme dislike for her and using menacing language. 'It was really nasty and made reference to tracking her down, so she called the police straight away. 'It was alarming that this man knew her home address, but she already upped security and has round-the-clock guard dogs and has cameras onsite. 'She is always incredibly friendly with all her fans and happy to stop for pictures and a chat so to have someone send such an unpleasant letter has really shocked her.' The insider shared that there is now an ongoing investigation and Gemma is 'grateful' to the police for taking the matter seriously.
