Dramatic protest in Jhansi: Chains, placards, and a buffalo lead power outage outcry

Hans India24-05-2025

Jhansi: In a strikingly theatrical protest that captured both attention and imagination, politicians and activists from various parties in Jhansi took to the streets to highlight the ongoing power crisis gripping the region.
With relentless power cuts and an overwhelmed grid, frustration has reached such a peak that former Union Minister Pradeep Jain Aditya and fellow demonstrators turned to symbolism and satire.
At the centre of the protest, held at Jhansi's bustling Elite Chauraha, was a buffalo. Yes, a buffalo.
As a local man passed through the protest site with his buffalo, demonstrators seized the moment. A placard labelled "Electricity Department" was swiftly hung around the animal's neck. In what became the image of the day, Pradeep Jain Aditya, armed with a flute-like been, stood in front of the buffalo and began playing—mimicking the traditional act of a snake charmer.
The message through metaphor: 'Bhains ke aage been bajana'—blowing the flute before a buffalo, a popular Hindi proverb used to describe efforts wasted on an unresponsive audience (Electricity Department).
'This is symbolic,' Jain told reporters. 'We are not harming the animal. In fact, even buffalo are suffering due to this heat and power outage. This isn't just about humans anymore,' he argued.
The protest, marked by symbolic shackles and dramatic gestures, came after days of unrest. Locals say that despite Bundelkhand producing significant electricity, barely 10 per cent of it reaches cities like Jhansi.
One protester chained himself in symbolic bondage, holding signs that read: 'Give us power or jail us instead.'
Jain, who has been spearheading the protest with support from multiple political parties and social groups, said, 'The government is in a Kumbhkarni slumber while people here suffer through blackouts and unbearable heat. Today, we blew the 'flute' in front of the system. But this is the last symbolic protest. Next, we'll take this to the streets and to every doorstep.'
Critics tried to spin the protest as animal cruelty, but Jain responded sharply. 'Why don't you ask the government about cows dying from neglect?' he questioned.
'This buffalo, too, is a victim of the same system. She stood with us because she's suffering in this heat just like the people.'
The protest, dramatic and unusual as it was, echoed a larger sentiment - one of fatigue, desperation, and a demand to be heard.
As Jhansi simmers in the summer sun with little electricity and even less response from authorities, the question remains: will blowing the 'been (flute)' finally wake the powers that be?
'Only time and power supply will tell,' say protestors.

Haryana youth seen handcuffed in Newark airport video had tried to enter US illegally, to be deported

Two days after a video posted on social media showed a young man 'speaking in Haryanvi accent' being manhandled at America's Newark airport – in handcuffs and pinned to the floor – it has been ascertained that the individual belongs to Haryana and had entered the United States illegally. He has since been admitted to a medical facility, as per sources. 'Our Consulate in New York has ascertained that the individual who belongs to Haryana had entered the US illegally without a valid visa and was being deported back to India as per a court order,' said sources in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday. 'During his transit in Newark, on finding his behaviour not conducive for travel, he was restrained and admitted to a medical facility,' the sources added. A day earlier, the MEA had formally raised the matter with the American Embassy in New Delhi. Meanwhile, the Indian Consulate in New York has also been in touch with the US authorities to determine the details of the incident. 'Once he is fit to travel, the individual will be deported to India,' MEA sources said on Wednesday. Posted on X by Indian-American entrepreneur Kunal Jain, the videos and photographs showed an unidentified young individual handcuffed and crying at the airport on Sunday night. Jain had tagged the Indian Embassy in Washington, DC, and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar in his series of posts. Taking cognisance of the videos, the Indian Consulate in New York said on Monday evening, 'We have come across social media posts claiming that an Indian national is facing difficulties at Newark Liberty International Airport. We are in touch with local authorities in this regard.' Photographs and video clips shared by Jain show the young man being restrained by officers from the Port Authority Police Department (PAPD), the agency responsible for law enforcement across major transport hubs in New York and New Jersey.

Chhattisgarh deploys 7 young IPS officers to Maoist-affected districts

The Chhattisgarh government has deployed seven young 2021-batch IPS officers to Maoist-hit districts — Sukma, Dantewada, Bijapur, and Narayanpur — to provide them with a first hand experience of a conflict zone and infuse fresh blood in anti-naxal operations, officials said. Another IPS officer from the same batch has been deputed as ASP in the special task force (STF) for anti-Naxal operations in Durg district. The transfer orders came on Tuesday night, just two days after the death of additional SP Akash Rao Girepunje in an IED blast triggered by Maoists in Sukma district. The transfers of these officers mark a significant reinforcement in Maoist affected districts, with all officers being posted as Additional Superintendents of Police (Anti-Naxal Operations), a move aimed at enhancing both tactical execution and localised planning. A senior officer who is part of anti-Naxal operations said, 'This is a good decision, though it should have come earlier. These officers have already completed over 20 months as City Superintendent of Police (CSPs) and deploying them now in core Maoist areas brings sharper focus to command, execution and supervision.' 'Nearly 20 IPS officers are now posted in just four districts, a first for the state. These young, dynamic officers will bring a decisive edge to operations in tough terrain and the smaller jurisdictions allow for specialised, intensive anti-Maoist efforts. Secondly, the redeployment aligns with the Union home ministry's goal of ending Maoist influence in the core zones by March 2026,' said the officer. The IPS officers who have been transferred to the Bastar region are Rohit Kumar Shah (Sukma), Udit Pushkar (Dantewada), Ravindra Meena and Aman Jha (Bijapur), Ajay Kumar and Akshay Sabadra (Narayanpur) and Akash Shrishrimal (Bhanupratappur, Kanker). The eighth IPS officer, Akash Kumar Shukla, has been posted as ASP in Durg. Bijapur superintendent of police Jitendra Yadav described the move as both timely and tactical. 'This will definitely help. The young batches are highly motivated and hardworking. When they come to Maoist-affected districts, they are given responsibilities of anti-Naxal operations such as intelligence gathering and field operations.' Other officers also believe that Tech and TAC (Technology and Tactics) in anti-Naxal operations have evolved manifold and the young recruits will bring in new strategies. 'We already know that even jawans are actively using new Tech and TAC techniques like data standardisation, data analysis, communication encryption and decryption methodologies, probability theory and game theory techniques,' said a second senior police officer. Narayanpur superintendent of police Prabhat Kumar said more and more young IPS officers are now part of four to five day long operations in the forests. 'Young officers have brought and will further bring a paradigm shift in anti-Naxal operations as it is more of a game of heart and mind than of weapon,' Kumar said. Inspector General of Police of Bastar range, Sundarraj P, said, 'This is not just a reinforcement of manpower but a step toward shaping a more responsive and resilient policing ecosystem. These officers will complement the experienced leadership on ground and help build deeper trust with local communities.' Experts believe that the move will give support and planning for SPs of Bastar districts. Former Special Director General of Police RK Vij added, 'This strengthens the SP-level planning and execution ability. Field operations need real-time intelligence and decision-making, and this shift supports both.' The appointments come just days after a tragic IED explosion on June 10 near Dondra village in Sukma killed ASP Akash Rao Girepunje and left two other officers injured.
