Health Minister reviews power supply readiness in govt. hospitals
Health Minister C. Damodar Raja Narasimha chaired a review meeting at the Secretariat on Wednesday, focusing on uninterrupted power supply in government hospitals and monsoon-related preparedness. Highlighting the need for seamless electricity in emergency medical services, the Minister directed officials to assess and improve the functioning of power generators across government hospitals. He instructed the installation of automated generators in facilities currently lacking such infrastructure. To enhance hospital-level power management, he also called for the temporary appointment of electrical engineers and the provision of essential backup equipment and supplies. The Minister stressed the need for close coordination between district medical officials and Electricity Department personnel to ensure 24x7 power supply to hospitals, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas. He also reviewed preparations for tackling seasonal diseases in the wake of monsoon. He instructed officials of the Telangana Medical Services and Infrastructure Development Corporation (TGMSIDC) to procure adequate stocks of COVID-19 test kits and medicines for diseases like dengue, malaria, and chikungunya. Dramatic protest in Jhansi: Chains, placards, and a buffalo lead power outage outcry
Jhansi: In a strikingly theatrical protest that captured both attention and imagination, politicians and activists from various parties in Jhansi took to the streets to highlight the ongoing power crisis gripping the region. With relentless power cuts and an overwhelmed grid, frustration has reached such a peak that former Union Minister Pradeep Jain Aditya and fellow demonstrators turned to symbolism and satire. At the centre of the protest, held at Jhansi's bustling Elite Chauraha, was a buffalo. Yes, a buffalo. As a local man passed through the protest site with his buffalo, demonstrators seized the moment. A placard labelled "Electricity Department" was swiftly hung around the animal's neck. In what became the image of the day, Pradeep Jain Aditya, armed with a flute-like been, stood in front of the buffalo and began playing—mimicking the traditional act of a snake charmer. The message through metaphor: 'Bhains ke aage been bajana'—blowing the flute before a buffalo, a popular Hindi proverb used to describe efforts wasted on an unresponsive audience (Electricity Department). 'This is symbolic,' Jain told reporters. 'We are not harming the animal. In fact, even buffalo are suffering due to this heat and power outage. This isn't just about humans anymore,' he argued. The protest, marked by symbolic shackles and dramatic gestures, came after days of unrest. Locals say that despite Bundelkhand producing significant electricity, barely 10 per cent of it reaches cities like Jhansi. One protester chained himself in symbolic bondage, holding signs that read: 'Give us power or jail us instead.' Jain, who has been spearheading the protest with support from multiple political parties and social groups, said, 'The government is in a Kumbhkarni slumber while people here suffer through blackouts and unbearable heat. Today, we blew the 'flute' in front of the system. But this is the last symbolic protest. Next, we'll take this to the streets and to every doorstep.' Critics tried to spin the protest as animal cruelty, but Jain responded sharply. 'Why don't you ask the government about cows dying from neglect?' he questioned. 'This buffalo, too, is a victim of the same system. She stood with us because she's suffering in this heat just like the people.' The protest, dramatic and unusual as it was, echoed a larger sentiment - one of fatigue, desperation, and a demand to be heard. As Jhansi simmers in the summer sun with little electricity and even less response from authorities, the question remains: will blowing the 'been (flute)' finally wake the powers that be? 'Only time and power supply will tell,' say protestors.

‘Unacceptable in a rights-based society': Haryana rights panel slams state govt over death of disabled man by electrocution
The Haryana Human Rights Commission (HHRC) has slammed the state government and the power department over the death of a disabled youth who was electrocuted earlier this year after he came into contact with an unfenced roadside transformer at GT Road in Sonipat. The Commission has also sought a status report from the Sonipat Police Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner by July 30. Directing the district administration to release financial compensation to the kin of Rajneesh, the HHRC ordered to register a First Information Report (FIR) against the officials involved, besides conducting a district-wide audit of electricity transformers to prevent such incidents in future. Following the incident on January 11, Rajneesh was rushed to FIMS Hospital, Sonipat, but he was declared dead on arrival. His uncle Ranbir later filed a complaint with the HHRC alleging that the transformer lacked adequate fencing or proper warning signage. Justice Lalit Batra, Chairperson of the Commission, termed the incident a 'gross violation of human rights' and demanded 'strict accountability from the Electricity Department and concerned authorities.' 'The incident reflects serious lapses in infrastructure safety and dereliction of duty by the responsible officials. The transformer was installed in a high-footfall pedestrian area without any protective barriers or warning indicators, putting public safety at serious risk. The absence of proper inspection, maintenance, and safety measures reveals administrative failure,' Justice Batra stated. The Commission further emphasised that the case represents a grave violation of the Right to Life under Article 21 of the Constitution of India, as well as rights guaranteed under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. It observed that the negligence and inaction of public authorities, considered 'State' under Article 12, undermined the constitutional and statutory protections available to citizens—especially vulnerable groups like persons with disabilities. Expressing deep condolences to the bereaved family, the Commission highlighted the state's heightened obligation to protect the dignity, safety, and rights of persons with disabilities. 'The death of Mr Rajneesh due to the reckless installation and neglect of public utility infrastructure was preventable and unacceptable in a rights-based society,' the Commission observed. Issuing directions to the concerned authorities, Justice Batra said, 'The Electricity Department must conduct a time-bound, independent inquiry to identify lapses and fix responsibility; disciplinary and/or legal action must be initiated against officials who installed the transformer without required safety provisions'. 'The state government is directed to provide immediate interim compensation to the victim's family in accordance with the principles of state liability and reparative justice,' the order added. It further directed the power department to conduct a 'district-wise audit of all transformers and high-voltage equipment in public/residential areas; and the audit must include – (a) proper fencing or barricading around all transformers; (b) installation of visible warning signs and hazard indicators; (c) verification of overhead clearance and removal of low-hanging wires; (d) maintenance and inspection records; and (e) emergency response systems in case of similar accidents'. Dr Puneet Arora, Protocol, Information & Public Relations Officer, Haryana Human Rights Commission, said, 'Commissioner of Police, Sonipat has been asked to submit a status report on whether an FIR has been registered and what stage the investigation into criminal negligence has reached. Likewise, the Deputy Commissioner, Sonipat, has been instructed to report on the disbursement of compensation to the victim's family.' 'The next hearing is scheduled before the Full Commission on July 30, 2025,' Dr Arora stated.

Tiruppur Corporation mulls additional 4 MW solar power generation at Iduvai plant
The Tiruppur Municipal City Corporation has proposed to establish a 4 MW solar plant at Iduvai village, where power is being generated through a 2 MW power plant established under the Smart City Mission. The demand for power in Tiruppur being high due to the presence of several industries, the civic body has established a 2 MW solar power plant to reduce electricity costs. The Electricity Department transfers all the power generated by the solar plant to the city's grid and offsets the value against the amount consumed by the City Corporation. A land parcel of 23.38 acres in Iduvai, situated 12 km away from the city centre, belonging to the Tiruppur revenue district, was chosen for establishment of the plant. There is sufficient land at the Iduvai site for scaling up solar power generation. A proposal has been mooted for establishing the plant with funding support of Germany-based KFW Development Bank, and an inspection was also carried out, S. Ramamoorthy, Corporation Commissioner, said. The City Corporation had invested ₹27.16 crore for establishing the Solar Power Plant.
