More consistent, composed Thailand still hold the edge, says sepak takraw coach

KUALA LUMPUR: The national sepak takraw squad concluded their campaign at the Asian Cup which concluded yesterday (May 18) with a decent two gold and two silver haul but more importantly continued to keep heavyweights Thailand on their toes.
Malaysia's first-choice regu of Azlan Alias (killer), Syahir Rosdi (tekong) and veteran feeder Farhan Adam beat Sittipong Khamchan, Varayut Jantarasena and Yotsawat Uthaijaronsri in straight sets to win the inter-regu gold at the Titiwangsa Stadium last week which proved Malaysia's win over Thailand in the Kuala Lumpur World Cup last year was no fluke.
Doubles duo Noraizat Nordin and Aidil Aiman Azwawi, who beat Thailand in the World Cup final last year, this time lost in three sets to Boonkoom Tipwong-Sirisak Anuloon.
National head coach Ahmad Jais Baharun opted to tweak his regus for the team event final yesterday, opting to field Azlan and Syahir with Amirul Zazwan Amir in the first regu. They lost in three sets to Sutthikiarat Panseankaew, Jakkrit Thinbangbon and Wuttinun Kamsanor.
Farhan joined forces with Noraizat and Haziq Hairul Nizam in the second regu but also lost in three sets to Tanaphon Sapyen, Sittipong Kamchan and Sirisak Anuloon.
Amirul Zazwan Amir, Norfaizzul Abd Razak, Shahalril Aiman Halim and Afifuddin Mohd Razali also won the quadrant gold for Malaysia, beating Japan (Toshitaka Naito, Yuki Sato, Ryota Haruhara and Wataru Narawa) in straight sets. Thailand, however, did not compete in the quadrant which is a relatively newer event though is expected to be contested at the Thailand Sea Games in December.
Jais admitted that his charges will have to raise their game if they are to end Thailand's dominance in the team event.
Malaysia has not beaten Thailand - who have immense strength-in-depth - in the team event since the 1991 Manila Sea Games.
"Thailand were much more composed in the team final and were solid in both attack and defence. They found an extra gear when it mattered," said Jais yesterday.
"I was hoping that we could win one of the first two regus to force a decider and possibly sneak an upset win. We came close in the first two matches but unfortunately it did not go our way.
"I have to admit that our team has to work even harder to improve if we are to beat them, we have to multiply our efforts. We have to be more consistent with our serves and be more solid in defence.
"The Thais are very consistent and are good at absorbing pressure. At the moment, that is what separates us.
"We still have the Thai King's Cup as well as the Thailand Sea Games to compete in this year so we have to keep our chin up and keep grinding."
Malaysia has now beaten Thailand twice in the inter-regu (World Cup and Asian Cup) after many years of playing perennial bridesmaids to the latter.
But whether Azlan, Syahir and Farhan can repeat the feat at the Sea Games this year, where Thailand will have home ground advantage, remains to be seen.
Jais is looking to use the King's Cup, which will be held in Korat on July 20-27, to prepare his squad for the Sea Games.
"Personally, I would prefer to send some different players to the King's Cup," said Jais.
"I believe we have young players who have strong potential but may be lacking exposure in the really big international events.
"This would be a good chance for us to prepare ourselves for the Sea Games."

Harimau Malaya's Draw Against Cape Verde Boosts Team Confidence

SEREMBAN, May 31 (Bernama) -- Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh has described Harimau Malaya's 1-1 draw against Cape Verde in a Tier 1 international friendly on Thursday in Kuala Lumpur as a positive development for the national team. She said the result, achieved against a team ranked 72nd in the world, will help build the team's confidence ahead of their crucial 2027 Asian Cup qualifying match against Vietnam on June 10. 'I hope every match will provide new confidence for our players, especially as they prepare to face Vietnam,' she told reporters at the 14th National Junior Wushu Championship here last night. bootstrap slideshow The event was graced by the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negeri Sembilan, Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir, and featured nearly 500 exponents from 17 teams nationwide. Malaysia will face Cape Verde again in a closed-door friendly at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on Tuesday (June 3) as part of preparations for the qualifier. Hannah also urged fans to turn out in full force to support Harimau Malaya, stressing that the energy and chants from the Ultras can significantly lift the players' spirit. 'The cheers from fans really matter. The Ultras' songs and chants play a big role in motivating the team,' she said, citing the difference in atmosphere during a recent Manchester United-ASEAN All-Stars match without Ultras. She expressed hope the national squad can improve their ranking under the new head coach, with the support of government and corporate sponsorship. On the junior wushu championship, Hannah said her ministry has channelled RM165,000 through the Sports Matching Grant to support the five-day event.

Rave reviews for Harimau Malaya debutants Ubaidullah and Palmero

KUALA LUMPUR: The future of Harimau Malaya may have just taken its first confident stride against Cape Verde and it came in the form of two debutants - Ubaidullah Samsul Fazili and Gabriel Palmero. While the international friendly ended in a 1-1 draw at the Cheras Football Stadium on Thursday, it was the composure and promise shown by Ubaidullah and Palmero that stole the headlines and the trust of national coach Peter Cklamovski. Ubaidullah, a 21-year-old centreback from Terengganu, was handed his first senior cap and he grew into the game in the most encouraging fashion. The nerves were evident in the opening 45 minutes but the second half belonged to him. With each tackle, pass, and confident surge from the backline, he embodied the spirit of a defender coming of age. 'I am proud to wear the colours of the nation,' said Ubaidullah. 'This was my first game for Malaysia, so there were jitters, especially in the first half. I made some mistakes but during half-time, the coaches and teammates reminded me to play my game. That gave me the push I needed.' By full-time, he had earned the man-of-the-match award, a testament to the composure he displayed against a team ranked 72nd in the world. His maturity belied his age. 'Football is about using every chance that comes your way. You are never a finished product - every day, you're learning,' he added. 'I enjoy playing in a back three and have done it for my club and the Under-23s. The intensity at the international level is higher but I will adapt.' His performance will only add to his growing stock, with reports of potential loan moves to Thailand surfacing earlier this year. On the other side of the pitch, Palmero - the Spanish-born wingback from CD Tenerife - brought composure and clarity on the flanks. The 23-year-old's touches were clean, his positioning intelligent, and his connection with teammates seamless, despite this being his first outing in Malaysian colours. 'I can do better,' Palmero said humbly. 'I keep working to be the best version of myself. But football is a language, and I try to speak it fluently. Malaysia is in my heart.' Cklamovski, known for his focus on development and detail, was impressed by both players. 'We had six Under-21 players in our first phase. They've all shown the right mentality and adjusted to the intensity we demand,' said the Australian tactician. 'Ubaidullah showed strong character. If we're talking about five years down the line, at a World Cup, he will be at the perfect age to peak. This is the mentality we want.' ''As for Palmero, he came from Spain, prepared well and connected with the group. ''It's not easy facing a world-class opponent in your first match, but he put in a solid individual performance.'

Soccer-Beever-Jones scores hat-trick in England's 6-0 Nations League rout of Portugal

Soccer Football - Women's Nations League - League A - England v Portugal - Wembley Stadium, London, Britain - May 30, 2025 England's Agnes Beever-Jones in action with Portugal's Carole Costa Action Images via Reuters/Andrew Boyers LONDON (Reuters) -Aggie Beever-Jones scored a stunning first-half hat-trick as England were ruthless hosts in a 6-0 thrashing of Portugal on Friday at Wembley in their penultimate game of the Women's Nations League group stage. Lucy Bronze, Beth Mead and Chloe Kelly also scored to keep England second in Group 3 of League A with 10 points, behind World Cup winners Spain, who have 12 points after their 5-1 win over Belgium earlier on Friday. Sarina Wiegman's team shrugged off any lingering effects from a tumultuous week that saw goalkeeper Mary Earps' shock international retirement announcement, and were on the front foot from the opening whistle, scoring five goals before the game was 30 minutes old. The 21-year-old Beever-Jones struck her first in the third minute, slotting home from a sharp angle, and Bronze headed home less than 90 seconds later. Lauren Hemp beat a defender to put a cross into the box that led to Bronze heading in after Mead's shot was blocked. With the floodgates opened, England attacked in waves and Beever-Jones completed her hat-trick with goals in the 26th and 33rd minutes, while Mead scored in the 29th and Kelly got on the score sheet in the 62nd. England will be looking for a victory over Spain on Tuesday in Barcelona to secure a spot in the Nations League knockout finals. In other League A matches on Friday, Germany defeated the Netherlands 4-0, Denmark beat Wales 1-0, and Norway and Iceland drew 1-1. (Reporting by Lori EwingEditing by Toby Davis)
