Indian Railways, a cornerstone of public transport in India, carries millions of passengers daily. Many choose rail travel for its perceived comfort, particularly on long journeys. The organisation continually works to ensure passenger safety and seamless travel. The Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police (GRP) work to prevent crime, while Travelling Ticket Examiners (TTEs) monitor ticket validity. Despite these efforts, serious offences continue to occur. A recent incident on a train in Darbhanga, Bihar, surprised railway staff, from TTEs to GRP officers.
The incident unfolded on June 5, 2025 aboard the Swadhin Senani Express. A man, dressed inconspicuously, entered the H-1 coach. He introduced himself to the train conductor as Alok Kumar Jha, claiming to be the Additional Divisional Railway Manager (ADRM) of Samastipur, Bihar. He then settled in and ordered tea. The situation changed drastically when the train arrived at Darbhanga station.

On-duty GRP officers boarded the train and grew suspicious of the self-proclaimed ADRM. They contacted the Board Security Control Room in Samastipur to verify his identity. The truth quickly emerged, and the GRP Darbhanga and Chief Ticket Inspector In-charge (CTTI) teams promptly arrested the man.
A video of the incident has been released, shocking railway employees. It depicts the man impersonating a senior railway official. When asked for identification, he became disruptive. Under questioning by the GRP, his impersonation was revealed.
During interrogation, the man finally confessed his true identity: Durga Kant Chowdhury from Nohan Badhiam, Madhubani. When pressed by the RPF Sub-Inspector, he initially claimed to be Alok Kumar Jha, the ADRM. But the officer, firm and relentless, demanded proof and challenged his story. Cornered, the man admitted he was only the ADRM's nephew. The Sub-Inspector ordered him to leave the train, warning release would come only if the real ADRM confirmed. In that moment, the man's carefully crafted disguise shattered, caught between relief and the threat of exposure.

Plea seeks to curb excessive ticket pricing by multiplexes

Kochi: High court has sought the state govt's stand in a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking judicial intervention to regulate alleged profiteering by multiplex operators through excessive ticket pricing. A bench of Chief Justice Nitin Jamdar and Justice Basant Balaji directed the state govt to file a counter affidavit and adjourned the matter to July 1. The petition was filed by G Manu Nair, a resident of Thiruvarppu in Kottayam. In the petition, Nair alleged that cinema chains routinely inflate ticket prices based on demand, time slot and release status, resulting in exorbitant rates, particularly during the initial week of screening. He contended that such price fluctuations occur without any public approval or oversight by licensing authorities under the Kerala Cinemas (Regulation) Act, 1958 and its Rules. The petitioner further pointed out that several Indian states have introduced legal mechanisms to cap cinema ticket rates and ensure affordability. Andhra Pradesh, for instance, imposed upper limits for various theatre classes and mandated a quota of affordable seats. Telangana introduced price caps across seating categories, and Karnataka directed a ceiling of Rs 200 for multiplex tickets. Tamil Nadu has not only instituted a price control regime but also ensured judicial oversight through directions issued by the Madras high court for strict enforcement against overcharging, he added.

Chips and cola in hand, man waits with 4 sons on railway tracks till train crushes them in Faridabad

Gurgaon: A 36-year-old man led his four sons — the youngest aged three and the oldest nine — to the railway tracks and held them tightly by the arms till an express train ran all five of them over on Tuesday afternoon at Ballabhgarh in Faridabad. Witnesses said Manoj Mehto refused to let the children go even as they pleaded with him to be released as they watched a train – Golden Temple Express – hurtle down the tracks towards them. "The train that was coming from Mumbai crushed them under its wheels around 1.10pm," said Rajpal, the SHO of the Govt Railway Police unit. While leaving home near Subhash Colony around 12.15pm, Manoj — originally from Bihar — told his wife Priya that he was taking the kids to a nearby park to play. Instead, he took them to the tracks and sat under Elson Chowk flyover for about an hour, waiting for the train to arrive. He bought chips and soft drinks for the kids. After the incident, the loco pilot alerted authorities at Ballabhgarh railway station. Police identified Manoj through his Aadhaar card and found his wife's phone number scribbled on a chit in his pocket, indicating Manoj's actions were premeditated, not something that happened on the spur of the moment. "We initially received information that a woman and her children had jumped before the train. But when we reached the spot, we learnt that a father and his sons were run over on the tracks," a GRP official said. When Priya was called, she told GRP personnel her husband had taken the kids out to the park and would return home soon. Called to the spot, she fainted on seeing their bodies. The remains were taken to the mortuary of Badshah Khan Civil Hospital for autopsy. Police said they were investigating why Manoj, a daily wager, took the drastic step. Police sources said Manoj had a troubled marriage but it wasn't clear if that had anything to do with his act of ending his own and the children's lives. "The priority now is to establish Manoj's state of mind and circumstances that led him to take such a step. It is also important to support the bereaved family," a police officer said.

Singapore Ship That Caught Fire Carried Chemical Used In Explosives & Paint: Sources

Last Updated: This shipment, imported by a Mumbai-based chemical and polymer company, is currently under investigation The MV Wan Hai 503, a Singapore-flagged container vessel, was carrying nitrocellulose, a chemical used in both explosives and paint and polish production, top Indian government sources told CNN-News18 on Tuesday. This shipment, imported by a Mumbai-based chemical and polymer company, is currently under investigation following a serious incident. The vessel experienced an explosion in its containers while it was 130 miles northwest of Kochi. The distress alert was relayed by the MV Cape Valencia to the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) in Mumbai. At the time of the incident, the ship was en route from Colombo, Sri Lanka, to Nhava Sheva, Mumbai, with an estimated arrival date of June 10, 2025. The MV Wan Hai 503 had a crew of 22, comprising 9 Chinese, 5 Taiwanese, 5 Burmese, and 3 Indonesian nationals. The ship's master, Wei Chun-Ju, is from Taiwan, said sources. Initial reports indicate that a continuous series of explosions in the containers led to a significant fire onboard. As a result, the crew abandoned the vessel, with 8 boarding a life raft and 10 taking to a survival boat. Unfortunately, 4 crew members are currently missing and are being actively searched for. In the aftermath of the explosions, 15 containers have fallen overboard, posing potential hazards. The MV Marvel, which was in the vicinity, is relaying updates to the MRCC in Mumbai. Officials said the severity of this incident underscores the need for thorough investigations to determine the cause and intended use of the nitrocellulose shipment.
