But, following a three-day trip to Barcelona over the Easter break, the couple are now believed to be "giving each other another chance," according to Catalan newspaper El Nacional - as sources claim that "all is not lost in their marriage".
The pair appeared to start drifting back in 2019, when fashion entrepreneur Cristina moved back to Barcelona to focus on her business interests.
But it was Pep's decision last November to renew his contract with Manchester City until 2027 that reportedly expedited their split.
Now, the manager has pledged to visit Barcelona once a week in between fixtures, the El Nacional report claims.
Maria Lapiedra, a source close to the pair, said the decision was to prevent them going weeks without seeing each other.
The report also states that the couple - who share three children - continue to wear their weddings rings.
The rescue operation appeared to kick off last month - amid reports that Pep had returned to the family home in Barcelona for a secret visit.
A source said: 'They spent three nights together in Barcelona, both staying at the family home.
'Pep went out on Monday to the dentist and Cristina went to her fashion shop in the city centre.

'They met up again at the shop and spent three hours there before returning to the house to spend the evening together.
'Pep left for Manchester on Tuesday morning.'
Pep and Cristina met in 1994 but didn't marry until 2014 - tying the knot at an intimate ceremony on the outskirts of Barcelona.
They had spent the majority of their marriage living separately when Cristina decided to move back to Barcelona with one of their daughters, Valentina.
The pair continued to make things work long distance until their split in December of last year.
However, they insisted that things would remain amicable throughout divorce proceedings - and that they would even share the same legal team.
Sources said in February that they had already agreed the initial terms of a multi-million pound settlement agreement - which would be finalised in a matter of weeks.
Respected Spanish journalist Lorena Vazquez, who broke the story of their split, revealed: "They want it above all to be friendly for the sake of their children.
"As you can imagine money is not going to be an issue and they have already agreed the initial terms to make sure this separation is the most cordial possible.
"They have a very good relationship, so much so that the same lawyer is arranging the whole thing.
"The divorce is on the way and is being left in the hands of people with their absolute trust."

Liverpool's game with the Spanish side was due kick off at 5pm, with a further fixture against the same opposition at 8pm. Fans had already begun to take their seats in the stadium when an alarm sounded and supporters were asked to leave the stadium. The reason for the evacuation is so far unclear at this stage. After a short period, supporters were allowed to re-enter Anfield huge queues formed at the turnstiles, reports the Mirror. The Reds are preparing for the 2025/26 Premier League season with a mixture of first-team and youth fixtures set to appear against their Spanish opponents in two separate matches. Darwin Nunez, Alexis Mac Allister, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott, Kostas Tsimikas and Andy Robertson are among the first-team regulars to be named to play in the first fixture. The friendly double-header marks the first return to Anfield for Liverpool since the tragic death of Diogo Jota. The Portuguese star, 28, was killed in a car crash alongside brother Andre Silva in Spain last month. In his programme notes, skipper Virgil van Dijk said: "It has, of course, been a very challenging time. "First and foremost for Diogo and Andre's family, for Rute and the kids. They are the people who must always come first in all of this. We must never forget that, and we cannot imagine their pain in this moment. "It is still a bit surreal, to be honest, but we are coping in the best way possible as a team, and we are all trying to do the best job we can in order to get through this really difficult time. "With everything that happened, it has been strange having to now try to carry on with work, with football. We will never forget Diogo, of course, but we just have to try to honour his memory. That's what we try to do each and every day. "I always come back to the fact that we have to look after Diogo's family, his parents, and that's the main thing. You think about so many different things, and it's difficult to process. You can't imagine the pain, the feeling that they have. That's why we try to be there as much as we can, and for each other as well. "That's also why it is very important that we honour and carry on his legacy, not only for now and the next couple of months, but for as long as we can, because that is what he deserves."

Ruben Dias is set to sign a new contract with Manchester City to extend his stay at the Etihad Stadium. A deal has been agreed in principle between the Portuguese defender and the former Premier League champions. Dias has entered the last two years of his current deal, which expires in 2027, but City are keen to keep the 2021 Footballer of the Year. Manager Pep Guardiola has seven centre-backs at the club after the January signings of Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov, but Dias has remained a regular when fit during his five seasons in Manchester. The 28-year-old, who is one of City's vice-captains, made 44 appearances last season and has played 222 games in his five seasons since joining from Benfica. Dias' new deal forms part of City's planning for the future after signing 10 players so far in 2025. Besides Khusanov and Reis, Omar Marmoush and Nico Gonzalez arrived in the winter transfer window. Their summer signings are Rayan Cherki, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Tijjani Reijnders, Marcus Bettinelli, Sverre Nypan and James Trafford.
