Rose of Tralee: "I love the empowerment that it brings to women"

Presenters Dáithí Ó Sé and Kathryn Thomas made waves in Dublin today, climbing aboard the MV Cill Airne to launch the 65th Rose of Tralee International Festival. Celebrating Irish identity in its many forms, the five-day festival will highlight the talents, interests and ambition of modern women living in both Ireland and abroad. We caught up with the Carlow Rose, Queensland Rose, and Western Canada Rose to find out more. Carlow Rose: Katie Ryan Unlike many of the Roses, yoga teacher Katie Ryan had no familial connection with the festival, but was drawn to it through her community nonetheless. "I got involved because there is a pub at home that I teach yoga in," she explains. "They wanted to put somebody forward to be the Carlow Rose and asked if I would do it. I was a little bit unsure, I didn't even know applications were open, but I thought, 'they've been so good to me with my business, I would love to give back to them'." Throwing herself into the deep end, Katie says she's still "in shock" to be competing, but believes that her experiences in solo-travel and self-employment have emboldened her to take on new challenges. "I think because I've done a lot of solo travel in my life, it's got me ready for adventures and mixing with new groups of people and joining new communities." "I love the empowerment that it brings to women," she says of the festival. "It builds everyone up in such a positive light. I think it really helps all of the girls to work on their self-confidence and their self-worth, and that's something I'm really passionate about." Queensland Rose: Siobhan Edwards At the other end of the spectrum we have Siobhan Edwards, a 23-year-old Australian who has been dreaming about being a Rose since childhood. "I've been involved in the Rose of Tralee my entire life," she says, beaming. "My mum was a past Rose. She was the 1989 Queensland - then Brisbane - Rose, so I've been going to the Queensland selection ever since I was about six years old." "It's been the biggest source of connection to my Irish heritage and the Queensland Irish community. I've always known that I wanted to be a Rose. I think seeing the women get on stage every year to represent who they are, and being very confident in that, while speaking about their Irish heritage at the heart of all that - it's been such a huge source of inspiration for me." "It's a dream come true," she adds, noting that the experience so far has exceeded expectations. "The Rose of Tralee is an inter-generational family festival. I think having it be something I've grown up with - and grown up within - I'm really excited to show that it's something that doesn't stop. I've always been in awe of it, and I think it's a festival that has a place in modern society and is a celebration of modern Irish women." Western Canada Rose: Ciara Confrey Originally from Newbridge, Co Kildare, Ciara moved to Calgary, Canada, when she was 15 years of age and lives there to this day. With encouragement from her mother ("Granny would be thrilled!"), the 26-year-old decided to connect back with her Irish roots, not only for herself but for her young daughter. "I have a one-year-old daughter, so I wanted to show her that you can do whatever you want to in your life," she says. "It doesn't matter what age you are or where you are in the world, you can do whatever you like." "She's like an eight-hour flight away from me right now," she adds. "The pressure is on! The pressure is on. But no, when she's five or six, I can show her the videos and she'll be like, 'mammy, mammy, mammy, you're on the telly'. I can't wait for her to know what this is and to know where she comes from, where her mammy comes from, and just to connect her a little bit to the Irish roots." The Rose of Tralee televised event will take place on Monday, 18 & Tuesday, 19 August from 8pm - with a break for the Nine O'Clock News and resuming at 9.35pm - live on RTÉ One and RTÉ Player.

Love Islanders spotted on romantic date after weeks of rumours – despite not even meeting in the famous villa

Just this week, eagle-eyed fans spotted a clue that the pair could be more than friends Hard launch? Love Islanders spotted on romantic date after weeks of rumours – despite not even meeting in the famous villa TWO Love Island stars have been spotted out on a romantic date, after weeks of rumours. The pair weren't on the same series of the show, but certainly seem to have grown close after the recent series wrapped. 7 Emily Moran and Ciaran Davies have been spotted out together Credit: TikTok 7 Rumours have been swirling about a potential romance Credit: Shutterstock Editorial 7 Ciaran rose to fame on the show last year Credit: ITV The Sun was the first to report that these two former Islanders, who appeared on different series', had become close. Last month we revealed how Welsh Love Island stars Emily Moran, 24, and Ciaran Davies, 22, had been chatting to each other. Now, the Welsh Islanders have been sighted together, walking beside each other in town on a day out. They were spotted from behind, and eagled-eyed Love Island fans have noticed that Emily is wearing the same outfit that she was in a TikTok posted earlier that day. The brunette beauty could be seen in a black top and jeans while heading out with a black clutch bag - the same outfit she's spotted in while out with Ciaran. Just this week, eagle-eyed fans spotted a clue that the pair could be more than friends. They both posted a similar photo from the same bar in Cardiff - just one hour apart. The pair were both at Golf Fang in the city centre last night. Ciaran posted his picture - which features a bright pink Barbie style car - at around 9pm, and then Emily posted an almost identical picture at 10pm. 'Get them off my screen' rage Love Island fans as Megan and Conor's hideaway romp leaves devastated Emily in tears Discussing this, one fan wrote: "Definitely not a coincidence!" This one said: "I feel like this is a perfect pairing." A third said: "These two photos are such a giveaway!" While another added: "We know Ciaran loves his Welsh girls." Emily, who hails from Aberdare in Wales was dumped from the villa after Tommy Bradley brought back blonde bombshell Lucy from Casa Amor. While, Ciaran, who is also from Wales, was coupled up with Nicole Samuel in last year's series, with the pair parting ways a few months after the final. The Sun previously revealed that there was a spark between the pair, after they connected when Emily was brutally dumped from the villa. A source exclusively told us at the time: "Ciaran initially approached Emily when she left the show just to congratulate her and stuff on how she was and handled herself on the show towards the end, which got them to talking. "Both have been getting to know each other on a more romantic level and they're looking to see how things go." The source added how at the moment since coming out of the villa, Emily is "taking every opportunity she can" especially with brand deals. They noted that Ciaran "is absolutely fine" with her focusing on getting brand deals and making a name for herself "because that's what everyone does when they get out". The source continued: "Emily has no intention of moving back to Australia as of yet as she's focused on her work and recent brand deals here in the UK. "But maybe who's to say that something romantically might also sway her decision to stay in the UK. "Apparently she has something big on the horizon with some brand." 7 Fans noticed Emily posted a TikTok in the same outfit that day Credit: TikTok / emillymorann 7 Just this week, eagle-eyed fans spotted a clue that the pair could be more than friends when they posted the same photo Credit: instagram/@emilyxmorann 7 Emily and Tommy had a bumpy romance Credit: Shutterstock Editorial

Irish abandon tourist hotspot as waiters 'put heads in hands'

Visitor numbers are dwindling in Marbella as Irish holidaymakers are cutting back on lavish getaways, with tourists giving it a miss. Marbella, nestled in the south of Spain, has long been ingrained in the minds of Irish tourists. Throughout the 20th century, this once quaint fishing village on the fringes of Malaga morphed into a bustling holiday hotspot. Prince Alfonso of Hohenlohe-Langenburg established the Marbella Club Hotel in 1954, putting the location on the map as a must-visit destination for Europe's crème de la crème. In more recent times, it's become synonymous with celebrity glitz and extravagance, with bronzed Instagrammers flocking there for Champagne spray parties. While the destination continues to be a top pick for Irish tourists overall and Love Island contestants specifically, it appears that some have started to fall out of love with Marbs. And it's not just one holidaymaker who was barred from Towie star Elliott Wright's restaurant due to his footwear. Marbella, Spain. (Image: Gustavo Valiente) Tourist numbers have taken a hit on the Costa del Sol this summer, marking the first dip since the pandemic began. The downward trend has been particularly noticeable in Marbella, where there was a 34% drop in Spanish tourists in June, according to figures from the National Statistics Institute (INE), reports the Mirror. In July, 68,630 people visited the city, which is 8,201 fewer than in 2024. The drop in visitors is wreaking havoc across Marbella's hospitality sector, with business owners left wondering how they'll survive financially. "There are days when we feel like we're not holding our heads in our hands from so much work, and others when the restaurant is empty. It's as if people are more restrained when it comes to going out," Yolanda, a waitress at one of the downtown hospitality establishments, told Sur. A retail worker in Marbella informed the publication that Spanish visitors to the resort have tightened their purse strings considerably. They attributed "how expensive accommodation has become" alongside inadequate public transport links between Málaga and Marbella - which are situated 40 miles apart along the coastline - for the 10% decline in tourist figures this summer. Despite reduced visitor numbers, Marbella remains bustling with activity. Hotel occupancy has climbed to 80.08 per cent, with guests staying an average of 3.95 nights - the longest duration since 2016. Laura De Arce, director of tourism for the City Council, remarked: "The city continues to attract a traveler profile that values excellence, exclusivity, and a differentiated offering. This not only translates into high occupancy rates but also into strong profitability, confirming Marbella's leadership in the premium tourism sector in the Mediterranean." Earlier this week, Mirror readers voiced their opinions on Spain as a holiday spot and the concerns they had about visiting due to high-profile protests against overtourism. "The message we are receiving loud and clear from locals, especially in the islands and where we usually visit in Andalucia, is that we should stay away and are not welcome," one man shared with us.
