Work on Mananchira–Malapparamba Road to commence soon

The Hindu10-05-2025
The much-awaited development of the Mananchira–Vellimadukunnu Road is likely to begin soon, as the Public Works department has finalised the tender for the works. The department is planning to enter into a contract with Malappuram-based Midland Projects within two weeks, and the work will commence shortly after.
In the first phase, the plan is to develop the stretch from the junction of Pavamani Road and Bank Road in Mananchira to the Malapparamba junction, where the road meets NH-66. The 5.32-km stretch is being developed at a cost of ₹80 crore. The road will be 8.5 metres wide, with a two-metre median at the centre and two-metre-wide footpaths on both sides. Additionally, there will be a half-metre-wide space on either side for gardening. The drainage and cable duct, both one metre in width, will run beneath the footpath. Around 350 streetlights will be installed on the median.
The Malapparamba–Mananchira stretch is being developed under the City Road Improvement Project. Land acquisition for the project is mostly complete, except for a few small plots that remain under dispute.
The project is the result of a long-pending public demand and nearly 15 years of persistent effort by the Mananchira–Vellimadukunnu Road Action Committee, headed by historian M.G.S. Narayanan, who passed away recently.
The development of the Mananchira–Malapparamba stretch is expected to be completed by early 2026. However, the remaining portion from Malapparamba to Vellimadukunnu is to be developed by the National Highways Authority of India, as it forms part of National Highway 766 (Kozhikode–Kollegal).

RSB Retail India files draft IPO papers with SEBI; seeks to raise ₹1,500 crore

RSB Retail India Ltd, a multi-brand retail chain in south India, has filed preliminary papers with markets regulator Sebi for an initial public offering (IPO), and people familiar with the matter indicated the issue could raise around ₹1,500 crore. The proposed IPO is a combination of a fresh issue of equity shares aggregating up to ₹500 crore and an offer for sale (OFS) of up to 2.98 crore equity shares by promoters, according to the draft red herring prospectus (DRHP) filed on Thursday. The Hyderabad-based company plans to utilise the net proceeds to the tune of ₹275 crore for payment of debt, ₹118 crore for setting up of new stores under the R. S. Brothers and South India Shopping Mall formats; and rest for general corporate purposes. Incorporated in 2008, RSB Retail is a leading multi-format apparel retailer catering to premium, mid-premium, and value customer segments offering ethnic wear, everyday casual wear and formal wear. As of March 31, 2025, RSB Retail had 73 stores across 22 cities in three south Indian states — Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. It operates through five key brick-and-mortar store formats — South India Shopping Mall, R.S. Brothers, Kanchipuram Narayani Silks, Dí¨Royal and Value Zone Hyper Mart. In fiscal 2025, RSB Retail India registered a revenue from operations of ₹2,694 crore and profit after tax of ₹104.4 crore. According to Technopak report, the Indian retail industry is poised for strong growth, with the total market expected to reach ₹92.6 lakh crore in fiscal 2025. Within this, apparel and accessories constitute a major segment, projected at ₹6.90 lakh crore, supported by rising demand for value and affordability as well as the expansion of omni-channel retail models. Technopak estimates that the apparel market in south India accounted for 28% of the national apparel market, valued at ₹1.72 lakh crore in fiscal 2024. This market is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 12 per cent to touch ₹3.05 lakh crore by fiscal 2029. Motilal Oswal Investment Advisors, HDFC Bank and IIFL Capital Services have been appointed by RSB Retail India to manage its public issue.

US stocks today: UnitedHealth shares jump over 10% after THIS Warren Buffett move. Details here

US stocks today: Dow Jones and the S&P 500 hit a new record high on Friday, 15 August 2025, as the benchmark Dow Jones Industrial Average gained from UnitedHealth shares jumping over 10% on Wall Street. The shares of the insurance firm, UnitedHealth Group, jumped more than 10% on Friday after Warren Buffett's Omaha-based investment giant, Berkshire Hathaway, invested fresh capital, acquiring a stake in the troubled firm. UnitedHealth has faced several challenges in the last two years due to rising costs, a US federal government investigation into the company's government-backed health plans, and a cyberattack that affected the personal information of 192 million US citizens, among other cases, reported the news agency Reuters. Warren Buffett, Wall Street's value investor, tends to invest in distressed companies that are likely to provide long-term strategic value. According to the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing data cited in the agency report, the Omaha-based investment giant owned nearly 5.04 million shares of UnitedHealth as of 30 June 2025. The data also reportedly showed that Warren Buffett himself owned nearly 1.18 million shares between 2006 and 2009 before selling off his stake in 2010. 'Buffett's purchase is a psychological reassurance to many investors that saw UnitedHealth as 'untouchable,' given the massive turbulence in the stock over the past few months,' Kevin Gade, chief operating officer (COO) of Bahl & Gaynor, a UnitedHealth investor, told the news agency. UnitedHealth Group shares were trading 11.64% higher at $303.08 as of 10:19 a.m. (EDT) on Friday's US stock market session, compared to $271.49 at the previous Wall Street close. In the last five years, the shares of UnitedHealth Group have lost 6.62% in the US markets, and are down 47.85% in the last one-year period. On a year-to-date (YTD) basis, the stock has lost 40.08% in 2025. However, the shares of the firm have given US stock market investors more than 18.98% gains in the last five market sessions on Wall Street. UnitedHealth's market capitalisation (M-Cap) was at $245.88 billion as of the trading session on Friday, 15 August 2025. The shares of the insurance firm hit their 52-week low level at $234.60, while the 52-week high level was at $630.73, according to the data collected from MarketWatch. State's economy in pink of health, says minister Hebbalkar

1 2 Udupi: Karnataka emerged as the highest per capita income (PCI) state in the country as the state govt demonstrated its efficiency in financial management to promote economic growth, said Laxmi Hebbalkar, minister of women and child development and in charge of Udupi district. During the 79th Independence Day celebration held at Mahatma Gandhi District Stadium in Ajjarkad on Friday, the minister said Karnataka ranks second in the country in GST collection, which is a clear example of the state's healthy economic system. Mahatma Gandhi, who led the freedom struggle, visited Udupi and called for the fight for freedom in Ajjarkad. It is an unforgettable event, and the memorial of this event remains permanent in this land, the minister recalled. The minister said approximately 82.57 lakh beneficiaries in the state are receiving direct deposits (DBT) through an Aadhaar-based transfer system every month. For farmers affected by natural calamities, the compensation software was upgraded to provide swift, transparent, and accurate relief directly to their bank accounts without any intermediaries, she added. Stating that the implementation of five guarantee schemes announced during the elections is ongoing, Hebbalkar said that the govt's performance received praise from experts both domestically and internationally. The proposal to upgrade Udupi City Municipality to a city corporation is under review by the govt, she said. Special attention is being given to developing tourism as a major sector in the district. Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna, Udupi Urban Development Authority chairman Dinakar Herur, District Guarantee Schemes Implementation Committee president Ashok Kumar Kodavoor, DC Swaroopa TK, ZP CEO Prateek Bayal, SP Hariram Shankar, and others were present.
