‘Impressive individual': Titans exit confirmed as Josiah Pahulu makes shock switch to the Storm

The Storm has snared highly touted front-rower Josiah Pahulu from the Titans for the next two seasons, with the in-demand forward to make the move to Melbourne immediately as he eyes more opportunities in the NRL.
Pahulu's future became a major talking point at the end of 2024 after the club's rookie of the year sought an immediate release to join the Bulldogs following reports the Titans rested him in the final round to prevent him from earning a cash bonus.
The club blocked any potential move at the time, but he's now on his way to the Storm after playing 22 matches on the Gold Coast.
'The Titans can confirm Josiah Pahulu has been granted an early release,' a club statement read.
'The club and Pahulu have been in discussions for some time but were unable to reach an agreement.
'In the best interests of both parties, Pahulu has been granted a release effective immediately.
'He won't be available for selection this round and will join his new club this week.'
Storm general manager of football Frank Ponissi is confident Pahulu will add some starch to the team's middle forward rotation that lost veteran Christian Welch before the start of the season after he retired.
'Josiah is a talented young footballer and an impressive individual,' Ponissi said.
'He's a dynamic young forward who has already shown impressive potential early in his NRL career.
'We're confident he'll make a strong impact and be a valuable addition to the talented group of emerging middle forwards in our squad and coming through our pathways program.
'We're excited to see what Josiah can achieve in Melbourne and delighted to welcome him to the club.'

Australian decision to open with Marnus Labuschagne in WTC final opens big door for South Africa

South Africa have seized on Australia's gamble to open with Marnus Labuschagne in the World Test Championship final declaring there's an 'opportunity' to expose the defending champions. Not only did Australian selectors overlook teen sensation Sam Konstas to give Usman Khawaja a fifth opening partner since David Warner's retirement, they also elevated Cameron Green to number three in his Test match return for the clash at Lord's. With a swinging Dukes ball in the hand of Proteas superstar quick Kagiso Rabada, South African captain Temba Bavuma was hoping to exploit the new-look Australian top three. 'I think there is an opportunity there,' Bavuma said when asked about Australia's opening situation. 'I think the conditions as well, I believe, bring us into the game a lot. With the swinging ball, [it's] very different to Australian conditions. Different to South African conditions as well. So that definitely gives us an opportunity. 'I think both teams have formidable bowling attacks. I think the real opportunity is within the two batting line-ups and how they are able to kind of front up and give their bowlers a score to bowl at.' Labuschagne, who has been given clear instructions from captain Pat Cummins to have 'positive intent' in his new position, will have to do so not only against Rabada, but also Marco Jansen and Lungi Ngidi 'That's our message here to Marnus, opening the batting can be tough but it can also be the best time to bat before the Dukes ball actually starts swinging and there's runs to be scored,' Cummins said. 'So it's keeping that positive intent, (which) is when he's batting at his best. 'With Marnus moving, we thought it's one spot up, it's not too different to batting at three. 'He's done well here in England in the past.' Cummins said Green, entering the match, his first for Australia since having back surgery last year, off three county cricket centuries in England, 'deserved a spot in the batting line-up' and backed him to adjust to the new spot. . 'We thought three probably suits him best. And then, with Marnus moving, we thought it's one spot up really. It's not too different to batting three. He's done well here in England in the past,' he said. 'I think our selectors are probably showing that they're happy to give someone an extra little run rather than pull the pin too early. He's played some crucial knocks in getting us here. Look back at the MCG [against India], his batting was right up there as a difference in that match. I think it's part rewarding those guys have got us here.' AUSTRALIA: Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (capt), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood. SOUTH AFRICA: Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Wiaan Mulder, Temba Bavuma (capt), Tristan Stubbs, David Bedingham, Kyle Verreynne (wk), Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi.

Mat Ryan saves penalty in fitting way to help Australia qualify for World Cup in his 100th game for the Socceroos

Socceroos captain Mat Ryan's 'fairytale' came true after celebrating his 100th appearance for Australia with FIFA World Cup qualification. The Socceroos beat Saudi Arabia 2-1 in Jeddah on Wednesday morning (AEST) to ensure Australia would take part in a sixth successive World Cup next year in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The Australians only needed to avoid a five-goal defeat to seal qualification, but were intent on producing a winning performance in the steamy conditions. And despite going behind in the 19th minute through a goal from Abdulrahman Al-Aboud, the Socceroos weren't going to be denied a win, with midfielder Connor Metcalfe and striker Mitch Duke scoring either side of half-time to give Australia the advantage. And then, fittingly, it was left to skipper and goalkeeper Ryan to provide the icing on the cake late in the match when he saved a penalty from Saudi winger Salem Al-Dawsari to ensure the Socceroos would not only qualify for the World Cup but also win the match. 'Fairytales come true,' an emotional Ryan said. '(But) any cap number that it is than an individual gets is a special one. The jersey, the team and the nation deserves that whoever it is taking that opportunity, that they give everything that they've got and try to produce for the nation in that moment. 'That's my motivation each day, to try to get as many successful moments in this shirt as possible, and if I'm not on the pitch then I try to help from the sideline, and I try to help day to day on the training pitch.' Ryan paid tribute to the entire Socceroos camp – including players, coach Tony Popovic, the rest of the coaching staff and the support sport – for helping Australia reach another World Cup. The experienced gloveman also thanked previous Socceroos coach Graham Arnold, who resigned from the job after Australia had only picked up one point from its opening two games in the third round of AFC qualifiers following a successful round-two campaign of six wins from as many matches. . 'He (Arnold) began this campaign, and we had a lot of success with him also,' Ryan said. 'Without that, this moment wouldn't be possible. 'The journey that we went on to get here. I'm just so proud of everyone. A big thank you for all their efforts … the dedication, the sacrifice.' Popovic said Ryan's career 'speaks for itself' and that there was a 'lot more' for the 33-year-old custodian to achieve. 'It's day he'll never forget,' the Socceroos coach said.
