HAWANA strategic partners laud media's role to elevate nation's image
KUALA LUMPUR: Strategic partners of National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025 have described their sponsorship as a crucial effort to strengthen the media's role in shaping Malaysia's image and reputation on the global stage.
World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) Group Managing Director Datuk Seri Dr Irmohizam Ibrahim said the decision to become the official venue for this year's HAWANA celebration is a gesture of appreciation for the media industry.
'HAWANA is the ideal platform to recognise and honour the contributions of journalists. Organising such events should not rest on one entity alone, but require collaboration across multiple agencies to ensure their mission and vision are fully realised,' he told Bernama.
Irmohizam was met at the HAWANA 2025-Bernama Strategic Partners' Appreciation Ceremony and Official Launch of BERNAMA Motorhome-Mobile Studio by Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil at Wisma Bernama here today.
Present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, as well as Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also HAWANA 2025 project director.
Meanwhile, GM Klang Brand Communication executive Nurhani Yasmeen Mohd Zainan said the company's sponsorship for HAWANA reflects its appreciation for the media's continuous support of local industry development.
'We hope our contribution helps further develop the media sector and journalism as a whole.
'Indeed, the media plays a vital role in communicating GM Klang's activities to the public,' she said.
The sentiment was shared by Amanah Saham Nasional Berhad (ASNB) Head of Marketing and Branding Natasha Abd Aziz, who praised the consistent support from media practitioners, especially the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama), in expanding Permodalan Nasional Berhad's (PNB) financial literacy initiatives nationwide.
'Bernama plays a key role in national development as a primary news source for the public.
'We highly value journalists' efforts, especially in navigating the many challenges of producing quality reporting,' she said.
HAWANA 2025, slated to be held from June 13 to 15 at the WTCKL with the theme 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics', has so far attracted support from 79 strategic partners, up from 44 last year, signalling increased trust in the nation's largest journalism event.
The main ceremony of the celebration will be on June 14, with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim being the guest of honour.
More than 1,000 media practitioners, representatives of local journalists' associations and media representatives from ASEAN member states are expected to attend the celebration while exchanging ideas as well as establishing strategic relationships.
HAWANA, now in its fifth edition since its debut in 2018, is organised annually to recognise the essential role of journalists in national development.

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 (Bernama) -- The initiative by the Malaysian Inland Revenue Board (IRB) in driving comprehensive digital transformation will simplify taxpayers' affairs nationwide, thereby increasing compliance levels. Its Chief Officer of Operations, Marsidi Zelika, said that the digital transformation does not only focus on migrating services to online platforms, but also involves changing the work structure, mindset and operational strategy to ensure more efficient and user-friendly tax services. 'It includes systems such as MyTax, ByrHASiL, e-Filing and now e-Invoicing, all created to enable taxpayers to manage their tax affairs quickly, easily and securely without having to go to the counter,' he said. He said this when appearing as a guest on Bernama TV's Ruang Bicara programme, with the title 'Digitalisation of HASiL: Simplifying Taxpayer Affairs', last night. He said that the digital system, such as e-Filing, which is equipped with automatic calculation and final review functions, helps users avoid common mistakes such as incorrect tax calculations and incomplete data. 'The data integration function, automatic verification and the use of a single identity-based system through MyTax ensure that taxpayers' information is consistent and easy to track,' he said, adding that the system is also linked to Monthly Tax Deduction (PCB) information from employers. Touching on the latest initiative, Marsidi said the implementation of e-Invoice, which started in August last year in phases, has received an encouraging response from the public, especially small and medium-sized businesses. 'As of June 4, 2025, more than 313.4 million e-Invoices have been recorded involving 33,391 taxpayers. This clearly shows a very positive reception for this digital initiative,' he said. According to him, the implementation of e-Invoice does not just replace printed invoices, but also opens up opportunities for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) to restructure their business accounting systems more systematically and effectively.

AI transforms journalism, ethics must guide the future
KUALA LUMPUR: Artificial Intelligence (AI) has entered the newsroom, transforming how journalists work while raising serious questions about ethics, accuracy and trust. According to Malaysian Press Institute president Datuk Yong Soo Heong (pic), these have been the ethical crossroads confronting today's media landscape. "Falsehoods are costly. Journalistic integrity demands rigorous fact-checking and transparency. "Trust is a journalist's currency and those who mislead readers will inevitably face serious repercussions,' he told Bernama recently. Yong acknowledged the undeniable benefits of AI in boosting newsroom productivity, but stressed that the core values of journalism — the truth, accountability and human judgement — must never be compromised. He also expressed concerns over the increasing reliance on AI-generated content and the alarming rise of deepfakes, warning that if left unchecked, these trends could severely erode public trust in the media. Yong noted that AI had transformed newsroom operations, enabling faster editing, personalised content delivery and more efficient workflows, especially among younger journalists who preferred AI-generated summaries over traditional face-to-face interviews. "Context, tone and human expression are irreplaceable. Only direct engagement captures the nuances that make a story resonate,' he emphasised. He warned that AI-generated visuals had become a new frontier of misinformation, citing several recent incidents in Malaysia and the region involving misleading or doctored imagery. These developments, Yong said, underscore the urgent need for rigorous verification protocols before publishing any content created or enhanced by AI. He emphasised that AI should be seen as a tool for empowerment, not a replacement for human creativity. Echoing these sentiments, Prof Dr Manjit Singh Sidhu, an expert from the College of Computing and Informatics at Universiti Tenaga Nasional, observed that Malaysian media organisations had been integrating AI at varying speeds, depending on their readiness and strategic focus. He said journalists who embraced change and learned to work with AI would not only survive the evolving landscape but also shape the future of trustworthy, meaningful journalism. He suggested news organisations develop and adhere to strict ethical frameworks when using AI, ensuring transparency in how the technology is applied throughout news production. To deepen media practitioners' knowledge of AI technology, Bernama has coordinated five AI training sessions, one each in Kuala Lumpur, Cyberjaya, Sarawak, Sabah and the East Coast. Meanwhile, recognising the rapid pace of AI advancement, including in journalism, this year's National Journalist Day (Hawana) celebration adopted the theme Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics. When announcing the theme on Tuesday, Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the rise of AI had rapidly transformed the gathering, processing and dissemination of information, but emphasised that it must not come at the expense of journalistic ethics. The Hawana 2025 celebration will be held at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur from June 13 to 15, with the highlight, its opening on June 14, scheduled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. More than 1,000 media practitioners are expected to attend the event.

Works Ministry Allocates RM88 Million For Upgrading Of 121 Overcrowded Schools
SHAH ALAM, June 5 (Bernama) -- The Works Ministry (KKR) will upgrade 121 overcrowded schools, involving 127 classrooms in six states, through a project to address the issue of overcrowded schools, involving an allocation of RM88 million. Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said a total of 127 letters of acceptance (SST) were handed over to the successful contractors today to implement the project in Selangor, Langkawi, Perak, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Terengganu and Penang. "Selangor has the highest number of SSTs, namely 111 works, followed by seven in Perak, four in Pahang, three in Negeri Sembilan, and one each in Terengganu and Penang. "The scope of the project involves 117 construction works for premier classrooms and 10 classrooms for the Integrated Special Education Program (PPKI) using the industrialised building system (IBS) concept," he told reporters at the Selangor Public Works Department (JKR) Headquarters here today. Ahmad said the IBS concept not only helped to speed up the construction process, but also ensured better and sustainable construction quality, with all projects targeted to be completed by October this year. He said the implementation of the project was part of the MADANI Government's initiative in prioritising people's projects to improve the quality of learning while creating a conducive education ecosystem. "These projects are a proactive step by the Ministry of Education (KPM) to achieve the target of implementing a single-session school system by 2030. "In addition, the ministry also wants to provide more modern and comfortable facilities while creating a conducive teaching and learning ecosystem for students, teachers, as well as the school staff," he said. Earlier, Ahmad handed over SST to 127 contractors for the project. They were selected through an open tender that was implemented from April 24 to May 16.
