Hornets honour players at annual awards banquet

The Alliston Hornets honoured players at the local hockey club's annual awards banquet held at the Alliston Legion on Saturday, May 29.
The Hornets had a stellar year, winning 40 games over the regular season and taking only two losses on shoot-outs.
Unfortunately, the team's goal of claiming a provincial title this year fell apart when the Hornets lost the Carruthers Division final series to the Orillia Terriers in a series that went five games.
The loss was a shock to fans who had followed the Hornets' winning season.
Club president Ken Cowen thanked the players for their hard work and dedication, the coaches, trainers, and other club personnel, as well as the volunteers who helped keep the club running.
'The Hornets are a non-profit community team,' Cowen said. 'That means that all the money from sponsors, the fan base, and fundraising events by the team go directly back into the organization.'
He noted, 'The costs of hockey go up every year.'
Cowen thanked the executive of the club, as well as the staff, including those who do everything from selling tickets to keeping the dressing room clean, with a special nod to Hornets general manager Travis Chapman.
'Our GM Travis Chapman spends hours on the telephone every day looking for players, working out issues, and talking to the PJHL,' Cowen said.
The Hornets honoured their graduating players who have completed their junior hockey careers.
Graduating players are #11, Jaeden French, #17, Cole Turcotte, and #47, Jacob Holmes.
Awards were presented to players for their efforts during this past season.
The Rookie of the Year award was presented to Will Hopcraft.
Jacob Holmes was named MVP as well as the Best Defenceman.
The Dougie Award for team spirit was awarded to Aiden Landers.
The Most Improved Player Award was presented to Will Millington.
Seth Ronan was honoured as Best Goalie.
The Most Sportsmanlike Player Award was presented to Cole Turcotte.
Jax Bellwood was named Playoff MVP.
The Hornets have announced a new head coach for the 2025/26 season.
Dan Schaly, a former professional hockey player and a recent assistant coach with the Innisfil Spartans, will take over coaching duties for the upcoming season.

NBA insider provides update on where things stand with Giannis Antetokounmpo, Milwaukee Bucks

Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo reportedly opened the door in early May to consider a trade to a championship contender this summer. After weeks of silence, there's at least an update on where the situation stands right now. During an appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, senior NBA writer Sam Amick of The Athletic shared that Antetokounmpo hasn't even met with the Bucks' organization yet to discuss his thinking. Advertisement Related: Milwaukee Bucks preparing for Giannis Antetokounmpo trade 'My understanding is that he's still reading the room, that's the phrase I keep going back to. He has not met with the Bucks in any formal capacity to discuss things. He's talking to his people, he has a pretty small group…It's going to be, I think, a slow process.' The Athletic's Sam AMick on where things stand with Giannis Antetokounmpo Amick went on to explain that Antetokounmpo first needs to have a discussion with his inner circle about his future and what his best options are. Only after that will he meet with the Bucks' organization, getting a feel for their plan, before making any decision. Giannis Antetokounmpo stats (ESPN): 30.4 PPG, 11.9 RPG, 6.5 APG, 60.1% FG, 1.2 BPG It was also noted by Amick that the Bucks' case to Antetokounmpo could highlight the fact that the Eastern Conference might not be as deep as previously thought a few weeks ago. The Boston Celtics, who were already headed for major moves this summer to shed payroll, will now be without All-NBA forward Jayson Tatum (Achilles) next season. However, the Bucks have plenty of their own problems to deal with and Antetokounmpo is turning 31 years old in December. Now years removed from winning his first championship, there still doesn't appear to be a realistic path back for Milwaukee to return to the NBA Finals in the next three years. He is reportedly still in Greece and there's no timeline for a meeting with the Bucks' organization. If Antetokounmpo isn't happy with the Bucks' plan and requests a trade, Amick speculated that the All-Star forward could propose a few teams that he would approve a trade to. If that happens, it would limit Milwaukee's negotiating power and significantly reduce how effective their rebuild can be with a weaker return in a blockbuster trade. NBA rumors: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Eastern Conference team have mutual interest

Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo is weighing his future ahead of a busy NBA offseason, with multiple teams around the league hoping the two-time MVP requests a trade. While an official decision hasn't been made, there's at least one team on his radar. Doug Smith of the Toronto Star reports that there is 'mutual interest' between Antetokounmpo and the Toronto Raptors. The report comes shortly after NBA rumors surfaced that Toronto wants to make a big move this offseason. That call won't even come until after he meets with the Bucks' organization, gaining an understanding of their long-term plan for building a championship contender around him. If he requests a trade, Sam Amick of The Athletic has previously said that he could see Antetokounmpo providing Milwaukee with a specific list of teams he wants to play for. If that happens, then Toronto could be on it and the Bucks would only have a select number of options. However, teams like the San Antonio Spurs, Cleveland Cavaliers and the Houston Rockets could make stronger offers. What's clear is the Raptors have always had an interest in Antetokounmpo, with president of basketball operations Masai Ujiri having aggressively tried to trade up for him during the 2013 NBA Draft. Shaq Makes Strong Jayson Tatum Statement During Hall of Fame Conversation

Shaq Makes Strong Jayson Tatum Statement During Hall of Fame Conversation originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Shaquille O'Neal is a big man with big opinions. Affectionately known as "Shaq", the Hall of Famer has continued an impressive run of success in his post-playing career. Advertisement While becoming an integral part and staple of "Inside the NBA" on TNT, O'Neal has also carved out time to co-host multiple podcasts since retiring from the NBA. It's on this platform, where O'Neal's unfiltered opinions can roam freely. The four-time NBA champion, and one-time NBA MVP, was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2016. After calling it quits in 2011 after an incredible 19-year-career, O'Neal feels qualified to give his opinion on current players who deserve to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. During an episode of "The Big Podcast" this week, alongside Adam Lefkoe, O'Neal made a strong statement when Lefkoe suggested Jayson Tatum's NBA resume, through just eight seasons, should put him in the Hall of Fame. "He's a Hall of Famer? You motherf***ers are just throwing people (Jayson Tatum) in there now," O'Neal said. Advertisement Lefkoe ran down Tatum's list of accomplishments through his eight-year-career. Tatum has been named to three All-NBA First Teams, has been named an All-Star five times, and has won an Olympic gold medal. Tatum, who suffered a gruesome torn left Achilles tendon during the Eastern Conference semifinals, will likely miss a large portion of the upcoming 2025-26 NBA season. "I would have to go (Stephen) Curry, he's got three or four rings. Giannis (Antetokounmpo), and Joker (Nikola Jokic)," O'Neal said.
