Flailing Sergio Garcia Clinches Spot at The Open Despite Poor LIV Dallas Finish
Sergio Garcia showed signs of his game recovering at LIV Golf Dallas after three months of largely disappointing results. The Spaniard finished tied for 25th at Maridoe Golf Club with a 3-over score for the tournament. However, Garcia's most important achievement of the week was securing his spot in The Open Championship, the final major of the season. "I'm excited about it, and hopefully I'll play well," he said after his final round performance. Garcia literally had to wait until the final hole of LIV Golf Dallas to secure his ticket to The Open. At the start of the round, David Puig was tied for fourth and had he finished solo fourth or better, he would have overtaken his compatriot and qualified himself. However, Puig faded during the third round and dropped nine places to 13th. After the Dallas event, Garcia sits fifth in the league's individual standings, behind Joaquin Niemann, Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, and Patrick Reed. As you may recall, the R&A implemented a new policy this season: a direct spot in The Open Championship field is awarded to the highest-ranked player among the top five in LIV Golf who is not otherwise exempt. The ticket falls to Garcia, as Niemann (top 25 in the 2024 DP World Tour's Race to Dubai), Rahm (major winner in the last five years), DeChambeau (major winner in the last five years), and Reed (runner-up in the International Series Macau) are already qualified. "It's going to be my second time playing at Royal Portrush, and it's obviously nice," Garcia said about his opportunity to play in the Open Championship. "It's one of the goals that you have at the beginning of the year, to try to play as many majors as you can with the limitations that we get." "I didn't help myself very much the last three months, but I'm glad that I got enough work done in the first third of the year, I guess, in the first part of the season." Earlier this season, Sergio Garcia named the Open Championship as his "favorite major" and declared his firm intention to qualify through the new option introduced by the R&A. Although his early-season results put him on the right path to achieving that goal-one win and two top-10 finishes in the first five tournaments-he hasn't been the same since April. In the three events immediately preceding Dallas, his best finish was a tie for 38th in Virginia. Adding to that slump, he missed the cut at the Masters Tournament, finished tied for 67th at the PGA Championship, and failed to qualify for the U.S. Open. This will mark Garcia's 26th appearance at The Open Championship, where he has finished in the top 10 ten times, including two runner-up finishes (2007, 2014), his best results to date. Jake Knapp Suffers Painful Finish at PGA Tour's Rocket Classic
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Jake Knapp once again experienced the ups and downs that have characterized his PGA Tour season at the Rocket Classic. Despite firing a second-round 61, a new course record at Detroit Golf Club, he couldn't quite seal the deal, ending with a painful finish. A birdie on the 18th hole would have given him a chance to enter the playoff to decide the event's title. Knapp played aggressively, hitting the fairway with his 328-yard tee shot and reaching the green with an excellent second shot. The ball settled for a 14-foot-9 birdie putt. But the golf gods denied him, as his shot broke slightly to the right, landing just 12 inches from the edge of the cup. That miss cemented his final result at the Rocket Classic: tied for fourth at 21-under. It's fair to say Knapp left several putts on the course that could have led to an even better finish. He missed two other attempts inside 15 feet, including a 13-foot eagle putt on the 17th and a 14-foot birdie try on the 13th. His overall performance for the round included six birdies and four bogeys (4-under). It marked his third top-10 finish of the season (T6 at the Cognizant Classic and T3 at the Zurich Classic), allowing him to climb six spots in the FedEx Cup rankings (from 60th to 54th). He also moved up seven places in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR), from 97th to 85th. Knapp has had numerous ups and downs throughout the season. This has led him, on one hand, to post a sub-60 round (a first-round 59 at the Cognizant Classic), and on the other, to notch only three top-10 finishes in 18 tournaments played (13 cuts made). He has carded 27 rounds with scores in the 60s or better; however, Kanpp hasn't been able to string them together in a way that would have translated into a stronger overall result this season. Aldrich Potgieter ultimately won the Rocket Classic, defeating Max Greyserman and Chris Kirk in a five-hole playoff. Kirk was eliminated on the second hole, while Potgieter took the title with a birdie on the fifth, something Greyserman couldn't match. R&A to host 'last-chance qualifier' on-site at 2026 Open Championship
The R&A announced Monday that, beginning next year, it will host a qualifier for the final spot in the Open Championship field on-site at Royal Birkdale. Responding to a fan survey that said it wanted more live golf, the R&A will debut what it's calling a 'winner-takes-all Last-Chance Qualifier' on Monday of tournament week that will feature up to 12 players competing at Royal Birkdale for a shot to earn the last spot in the field of 156 players. The R&A will also host a Heroes Classic on Tuesday of tournament week that will feature a number of past championships and special guests. The last-chance shootout – similar to a Monday qualifier for regular PGA Tour events – is in addition to the other avenues into The Open. Final qualifying for this year's Open will be held Tuesday at four sites around the United Kingdom. 'We have asked (fans) how we can make their experience of attending The Open even more enjoyable and they have been clear – they want more live golf, more opportunities to engage with the traditions of golf's original championship, and more activities on-site to watch, listen and play,' said Mark Darbon, chief executive of the R&A. 'As a result, we have introduced new features which we believe will elevate The Open for fans, particularly on the days leading up to the championship, providing a memorable experience of attending Royal Birkdale with friends and family next year.'
