Cronos review – Guillermo del Toro's signature wit and gore on show in 1992 debut

The Guardian19-02-2025
Guillermo del Toro's feature debut from 1992 is a work regarded by many as an early masterpiece, featuring the director's key repertory players Federico Luppi and Ron Perlman. Yet for all its wit and strangeness, this film underscores my feeling I am not fully part of the Del Toro true believer fanbase. I find myself restive at the elaborate, intricate but sometimes slightly inert visual contrivances, though I have always enjoyed his films, perhaps especially his remake of Nightmare Alley.
Cronos is a macabre body-horror comedy, perhaps more intriguing than frightening, with a hint of steampunkiness; it looks almost like a feature-length pilot for some cult TV show that never got made. There is a faintly perfunctory prologue sequence about an 'alchemist' in the 16th century who invented the Cronos, a device with the complex mechanism of a watch, but which has a kind of immortal insect-creature within it whose body evidently extrudes magical liquid that can be implanted into the body of the owner via tiny metal stingers which emerge from the Cronos's sides.
The Cronos is lost for centuries until it is discovered by chance in the present day by the interestingly named Jesús Gris (Luppi), a kindly old grandfather and antiques dealer, not unlike the bookshop owner Mr Coreander in Wolfgang Petersen's The NeverEnding Story. He finds himself pricked by the Cronos; this starts to make him younger (although, disconcertingly, not all that much younger) and burdens him with a vampire-like thirst for blood. He attempts to gratify this in a men's washroom in one gruesome sequence, although his bloodthirst is not an important problem in the narrative.
Jesús's possession of the Cronos enrages a sinister dying plutocrat called Dieter de la Guardia (Claudio Brook), who has been on trail of the Cronos for years and who employs his thuggish nephew Angel (Perlman) as his all-purpose goon and tough guy. (Amusingly, the lunkhead Angel keeps getting his nose broken in fights.) There are many bizarre set-pieces, particularly when Jesús's apparently dead and mangled body has to be smartened up by creepy mortician Tito (Daniel Giménez Cacho) prior to the funeral; Tito is indignant to discover that the body is to be cremated and all his artistry is to go up in flames.
And so Cronos gallops on, in its peculiar way, to a conclusion that is weird without being especially shocking. But it certainly has a distinctive authorial signature, the work of a very individual film-maker.
Cronos is on digital platforms and UHD/Blu-ray from 24 February.

Actress known for her role in a hit supernatural TV show from the 90s emerges in NYC... can you guess who?

An actress who is known for her iconic role in a supernatural horror TV series from the 1990s was spotted enjoying a rare outing in New York City this week. The star also had the chance to portray the same character in a sequel series to the hit show, which famously premiered on The WB in 1997. She kicked off her successful career in the entertainment industry in the 90s when she appeared in an episode of Baywatch. Over the years, the Hollywood actress has worked alongside a number of celebrities such as Sylvester Stallone, Kristen Bell and Jason Statham. Along with a thriving television career, the star has also jumped onto the big screen for a variety of film projects as well. Can you guess who it is? It is Charisma Carpenter from Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The 55-year-old actress played the character of Cordelia Chase in Buffy The Vampire Slayer for three seasons before taking on the same role in the spinoff series Angel. She was spotted on a rare outing in NYC on Thursday as she took a summer stroll in the East Village. Carpenter - who celebrated her birthday on Wednesday - was stylishly casual in a short-sleeved, printed shirt as well as a pair of loose-fitting denim jeans. She additionally slipped into a pair of comfy sneakers and draped a blue leash over her arm while walking her adorable dog. Charisma's long brunette locks were parted to the side and effortlessly flowed down past her shoulders in light waves. The star completed the ensemble by sporting a pair of fashionable brown shades as she held a conversation on the phone. Carpenter's latest outing comes not long after she opened up about the Buffy The Vampire Slayer sequel series that is currently in development at Hulu. She was spotted on a rare outing in NYC on Thursday as she took a summer stroll in the East Village Carpenter - who celebrated her birthday on Wednesday - was stylishly casual in a short-sleeved, printed shirt as well as a pair of loose-fitting denim jeans Sarah Michelle Gellar - who played the titular character in the original show - is slated to reprise the role in the upcoming project. Back in February, it was reported that a pilot has officially been ordered by Hulu with Chloe Zhao set to direct, per Deadline. Earlier this month, Carpenter opened up about her hopes that her character could also be seen once again in the spinoff series. During an interview with IGN, the star expressed: 'I am so excited for fans, and I know it will be fantastic because of who's involved. 'To see this actually happen for the fans makes me thrilled. I am so hopeful to be included, for Cordelia to be a part of this new iteration.' Charisma played Cordelia Chase in the original Buffy The Vampire Slayer series for three seasons. She went on to portray the same character in the spinoff series Angel - which also starred David Boreanaz. However, after the fourth season, her character had been killed off and the actress later claimed that the show's creator Joss Whedon - who was also behind Buffy - had done so because she had a baby. In 2021, she also accused Whedon of creating a 'toxic' work environment and 'abusing his power.' She released a lengthy statement on X (formerly Twitter at the time) in solidarity with actor Ray Fisher - who had previously accused Whedon of 'abuse' and 'unacceptable behavior' while on the set of Justice League in 2017. During her conversation with IGN, Charisma talked about her character's death in Angel and how she could potentially reprise the role in the reboot series. 'I don't know really what to make of it,' she explained. 'I'm sure there are caveats - Cordelia died on Angel not on Buffy. 'I don't know what that means for Cordelia specifically - but I'm hopeful that it includes Cordelia obviously, it would be a dream to be included, and it would just be so poetic for that to occur, and for it to occur with this group.' When the outlet commented that she should return to the world of Buffy, Carpenter said, 'Listen, you're not gonna get an argument out of me. 'Because the way it went down for her was just - without using inflammatory language - just was not... she was built up so big, she'd grown so much, she'd had this remarkable journey, and for her to go out the way that she did just felt so unjust.' She later gave credit to the character of Cordelia and stated that playing the role also changed her as a person. 'I'm 1,000% who I am today because of that character. I used to be a lot more demure, a lot more of a people-pleaser, a lot less outspoken, a lot smaller. Cordelia has informed who I am in a very big way. 'She brought out, in me, a side I didn't know existed, but that's what happens when you play a character for nearly 10 years,' the star added. Carpenter kicked off her professional acting career in 1994 when she appeared in one episode of Baywatch. Three years later she was cast in Buffy and later the spinoff series Angel until her exit from the show in 2003. She went on to take in smaller roles in other shows including Charmed and Veronica Mars. Charisma later jumped onto the big screen in the movie The Expendables (2010) and the sequel two years later. The actress was previously married to Damian Hardy from 2002 until their divorce was finalized in 2008. The former couple welcomed a son during the course of their marriage - and he will occasionally appear on Carpenter's Instagram account.

Love Island viewers fume as fan favourite axed days before final

Love Island fans tuning into the latest episode of the ITV2 series were left very annoyed to see a fan favourite dropped from the show, a day on from two others being axed There was another brutal goodbye on Love Island on Wednesday night, a day after two Islanders were axed. ‌ An important decision had to be made as a third star was revealed to be leaving. A vote had revealed the favourite Islanders by fans, and those viewers were not keen on. ‌ On Tuesday we saw a double elimination as Emma and Boris were sent packing. But it didn't end there, and on Wednesday the fallout saw Yasmin, Ty, Toni and Cach left with a huge decision in their hands. ‌ Being the favourites, it was up to them who else left the show, and it was between new bombshell Angel and Billykiss. They understandably found it a tough choice, conflicted over who to pick as they discussed it between them. They did come to a decision in the end though, and ultimately it was Billykiss who was dumped. Angel was saved ahead of a double return to the villa by some former Islanders. ‌ Viewers watching at home were furious with the latest dumping, with her popular amongst fans of the show. Fans had hoped Billykiss would have stayed in the villa, with many shocked she was even in the bottom. Angel also came as a surprise to some fans given other Islanders that fans are not so keen on. Taking to social media, fans fumed about the exit, with one fan saying: "Billykiss has been done so dirty." Another fan said: "Okay, so Billykiss is leaving? Dang!!" as a third viewer posted: "Wait but what has Billykiss done to you guys?" Another viewer said: "I feel so bad for Billykiss." ‌ The comments kept on coming too with one reading, as a fan slammed the show: "Should have let Billykiss go home with the others. No need to kill her confidence even more than you already have making her walk out alone in such a humiliating way is sick." Meanwhile one fan believed the show had made it very obvious that Billykiss was going home hours before it even aired. The scenes would have been filmed together before being split across Tuesday and Wednesday's episodes. One fan noted that the Instagram of the show had asked viewers to vote for Islanders and moments in their awards task. One such nomination saw Angel up for an award for flirtiest performance. A fan suggested this gave away that Angel was still in the villa. They said online: "The fact that you can vote for Angel for flirtiest performance makes it extremely obvious it's Billykiss that gets dumped tonight - or what would the point of that be."
