Anganwadi golden jubilee celebrations in October: Minister
Bengaluru: As Anganwadi is completing 50 years in Karnataka next October, a grand Golden Jubilee program will be organized at the Palace Grounds in Bengaluru, said Lakshmi Hebbalkar, Minister of Women and Child Development and Empowerment of the Disabled and Senior Citizens. Speaking after presiding over the progress review meeting of the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) branch of the Bangalore and Mysore divisions of the Women and Child Development and Empowerment of the Disabled and Senior Citizens Department, the Minister said that a round of talks has already been held with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in this regard.
The Union Minister of Women and Child Development will be invited to the ceremony. He said that he dreams of organizing a program in the presence of 1 lakh people, including all the Anganwadi workers and helpers, along with all the staff of the department. The officers and staff should work responsibly for the progress of the department. He said that the projects of the department should be managed in a proper manner. In the last budget, the honorarium of Anganwadi workers and helpers was increased by Rs 1,000. The Central Government has recognized the maximum number of 3,800 mini Anganwadis in the entire country in Karnataka. The Minister said that this many mini Anganwadi centers have been obtained as a result of the persuasion of the Central Government. The Justice Venugopal Gowda Committee has also expressed its appreciation for the functioning of our department. The Minister said that in future, a progress review meeting of the department will be held at the divisional level.

The Minister received information and discussed the start of pre-primary classes in Anganwadi centers, progress review of various indices as per the Poshan Tracker under the jurisdiction of the ICDS branch at the division level, details of grants and expenditure released under various account heads of the ICDS scheme, progress review of Anganwadi buildings, details of recruitment of Anganwadi workers and helpers, details of pending NPS reconciliation process and Ayushman Bharat health card in the meeting.
Demand for starting LKG, UKG
All officers of the department including Deputy Directors, CDPOs should take utmost care to start pre-primary classes (LKG, UKG). Starting pre-primary classes is a matter of prestige for the department. The Minister said that LKG, UKG will also help the department in its survival. The meeting was attended by the Secretary of the Department, Dr. Shamla Iqbal, Director of the Women and Child Development Department, Raghavendra, the Minister's Private Secretary, Dr. T.H. Vishwanath, the Minister's Officer on Special Duty and the Joint Director of the Department, B.H. Nischal.

Four days after a deadly stampede in Bengaluru, a family in Karnataka's Kolar was handed a financial compensation for the damage that cannot be compensated - the loss of their 24-year-old daughter. Kolar deputy commissioner MR Ravi visited the home of Sahana, one of the 11 people who died in the June 4 stampede that occurred in front of the Chinnaswamy stadium during the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) team's IPL victory celebrations. Forty-seven were injured in the tragedy. Her mother broke down as she was offered the cheque of Rs 25 lakh compensation by the officer. Sahana's father, who was trying to hold back his tears, burst out crying as soon as he touched the cheque. As other family members comforted them, the parents were seen weeping uncontrollably. All the victims of the stampede were in the 20-30 years age group with a 14-year-old being the youngest - Divyanshi (14), Doresha (32), Bhoomik (20), Sahana (24), Akshata (27), Manoj (33), Shravan (20), Devi (29), Shivalinga (17) and Chinmayi (19) and Prajwal (20). Earlier, the Karnataka government had announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each, which was later increased to Rs 25 lakh per family. The opposition BJP has been criticising the Congress government in the state, accusing Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and his deputy DK Shivakumar of "apathy". "The police had informed them of the first death by noon. Eight young ones had already died when the event began, yet the programme continued, showing that these leaders have hearts of stone," said Leader of Opposition in Karnataka Assembly R Ashoka. The tragedy has also led to a blame game with the state government suspending police officers, and cops saying that they had flagged concerns about the event. Several officials, including Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda, have been suspended for alleged laxity that led to the stampede. Four people, including an RCB marketing head, have been arrested so far. A letter accessed by NDTV established that the police force deployed at the Karnataka Vidhana Soudha had warned against the idea of holding the RCB's IPL trophy celebrations at the grand stairs of the premises. In a letter to the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms on June 4, Vidhana Soudha's Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) MN Karibasavana Gowda pointed out the lack of time for security preparedness to tackle "lakhs of cricket fans" expected at the spot. R Ashoka slammed the government for going on with celebrations both at Vidhana Soudha and the stadium thereafter, despite deaths due to a stampede, and called the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister "inhuman". On Saturday, top senior officials of Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), Secretary A Shankar and Treasurer ES Jairam, tendered their resignations, taking "moral responsibility" for the stampede.

Odisha revenue minister assures action against sand mafia
BHUBANESWAR : Revenue minister Suresh Pujari on Saturday said Odisha would not be allowed to follow the lawless path in sand operations like it is in Bihar and West Bengal, while responding to the recent assault of an additional tehsildar in Kaptipada block, Mayurbhanj district, by the sand mafia. He promised stringent action against the sand mafia regardless of their connections, while speaking to mediapersons here on Saturday. "The Kaptipada incident represents a serious escalation in conflict between law enforcement and the sand mafia. The attack on officers performing their enforcement duties is similar to Bihar and West Bengal, where criminals challenge state authority. The administration's commitment in curbing illegal sand trafficking faces violent resistance from well-organised criminal networks. We pledged decisive action against both the direct perpetrators and their masterminds," said Pujari. This zero-tolerance approach signals a strong message that such attacks on govt officials will not be tolerated. The incident serves as a watershed moment in the ongoing battle against illegal sand mining operations, officials said. Kaptipada additional tehsildar Bhimakanta Majhi suffered injuries after an attack by the sand mafia near Suno river bed on Monday morning. In the incident, Majhi's car was damaged. Majhi, based on intelligence reports, went to inspect sand being lifted illegally using excavators. When he opposed it, he was attacked. Police said the miscreants, mostly goons of the sand mafia, intercepted Majhi's car and tried to stop him from venturing into the sand lifting site in the river bed. Pujari announced free sand provision for Pradhan Mantri Awas beneficiaries, with a draft standard operating procedure (SOP) already in preparation to streamline the process. "The most important thing is how to facilitate the supply of sand at low cost to the lower middle class and poor. We will introduce the provision of issuing permits to beneficiaries of PM Awas to lift at least two tractor fulls of sand for free for construction of houses. The PM Awas will be free from the sand cost burden," Pujari told reporters. BJD spokesperson Lenin Mohanty commented that the minister's statements are merely an attempt to whitewash the obvious collusion between administration officials and the mining mafia. "Instead of taking concrete action, the minister has limited himself to making empty rhetoric," he said. Mohanty said there has been a drastic decline in revenue from minor minerals from Rs 1,485 crore in 2023-24 to just Rs 600 crore in 2024-25.
