'My first thought was to my dad'

BBC News20-03-2025

Anth Young from the Total Sport Newcastle United podcast says his first thought was for his dad when the Magpies won the Carabao Cup at Wembley. He said: "My first thought was to my dad and how he followed this team home and away. I would have loved to give him a kiss and a cuddle and say 'this is what we've done dad'."We are such a big city with one club. You grow up supporting Newcastle - you have nothing else. My dad couldn't afford to take me to games so he took me to reserve games."I thought of all of that in that moment. It was a lot to take in and I'm not ashamed to say I absolutely cried when that full-time whistle went."Take in all the BBC Radio Newcastle audio on the Magpies here

Transfer news LIVE: Wirtz set for Liverpool MEDICAL, Chelsea chase Gittens, De Bruyne on verge of joining next club

THE thrills and spills of the summer transfer window are well underway with some huge deals in the pipeline. Meanwhile, Chelsea are still chasing Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Gittens after their opening two bids were rejected. Elsewhere, Kevin De Bruyne is reportedly on the verge of joining Napoli. And Florian Wirtz 's move to Liverpool is now imminent as the Reds have agreed an incredible package worth £127m with Bayer Leverkusen. 10th Jun 2025, 22:27 By Gary Stonehouse Newcastle move for Trafford Newcastle hope to finalise a £30million deal to sign James Trafford after re-opening talks with Burnley. The 22-year-old goalkeeper saw a £16m switch to St James' Park collapse last summer but has remained Eddie Howe's top target. Ex-Manchester City stopper Trafford stayed at Turf Moor and enjoyed an incredible campaign as his 29 clean sheets helped the Clarets seal an instant return to the Premier League. Despite that promotion, the England international still wants the move as much as the Magpies. SunSport understands that representatives from both clubs are now in discussions and Howe is hopeful he can finally land his man. Trafford told Ben Foster's Fozcast podcast last week how he missed out on a 'brilliant' move 12 months ago but had no problem staying with Scott Parker's team once it failed to happen. 10th Jun 2025, 21:48 By Maignan talks halt Chelsea have halted talks over a deal to sign Mike Maignan but will continue pursuing Jamie Gittens. The Blues had hoped to land both in time for the Club World Cup, which starts next week, but deals will not be agreed in time. Chelsea are not willing to meet AC Milan's asking price of more than £20million for Maignan given he has just a year left on his deal. Their latest proposal was for a fee of around £12m. Maignan has made his desire to move to Stamford Bridge clear, telling Milan he will not renew his deal. Chelsea opened talks after being alerted to Maignan's desire to move, but refuse to budge on their valuation. There remains the chance that negotiations could pick up again later in the window if Milan's asking price comes down. Failing that, from January Chelsea could hold pre-contract talks over a free transfer next summer. The possibility of Djordje Petrovic going the other way as part of a deal has been discussed. 10th Jun 2025, 20:48 By Kostas Lianos Spurs close to Frank Tottenham are close to sealing a deal with Brentford for manager Thomas Frank. That is according to Sky Sports, who claim Spurs are getting nearer to agreeing compensation with the Bees. There is still the future of several of Frank's backroom staff members to be finalised. But further progress is expected on Wednesday and the hope is a move can be concluded before the end of the week. 10th Jun 2025, 19:48 By Kostas Lianos First transfer window explained This unusual two-part summer transfer window has seen its first half come to an end. The reason this year's summer market is different is the revamped Club World Cup, which will begin this coming Sunday. To accommodate clubs wanting to sign players ahead of the controversial tournament, the transfer window opened early on June 1. But due to FIFA's rules stipulating the transfer windows in a calendar year when combined cannot be greater than 16 weeks, a break had to be inserted - therefore the first window closed tonight at 7pm BST. The initial 10-day period applied only to the 20 national associations with teams playing in the Club World Cup to allow them to register players for the group stages of the competition. That includes England, with Manchester City and Chelsea set to compete in the tournament. The summer transfer window reopens on June 16 and will remain open until September 1. Teams participating in the Club World Cup who sign players from this date can register them for the knockout stages of the competition. 10th Jun 2025, 19:03 By Kostas Lianos Cherki deal sealed Manchester City announced the signing of Rayan Cherki from Lyon in a £34m deal. Cherki put pen to paper on a five-year contract and will play for City in the Club World Cup. This is a dream for me. Honestly, to be joining a club like Manchester City and have the opportunity to make the next step in my career here is something very, very special. I have worked so hard for this all my life. I love this sport, and I can't wait to develop further here in Manchester with Pep and his backroom staff. Everyone knows how good City are – they have been so successful for many years now. The responsibility to help the team continue winning is something I want to embrace. I would only leave Lyon for a project I really believe in and everything at City suggests I can develop my game and help the team be successful in the future. I can't wait to show City fans what I can do. Rayan Cherki By Martin Blackburn Man City spending spree Manchester City have hit the ground running in the first half of the summer transfer window. Rayan Cherki joined City, who paid around £30million up front with a further £5m in add-ons if he proves to be a success. Cherki follows full-back Rayan Ait Nouri - who moved from Wolves to the Etihad for £31m - on Monday and reserve keeper Marcus Bettinelli. Meanwhile Tijjani Reijnders' £46m switch from Milan kicked off the Citizens' summer spree and will be announced on Wednesday. The deal was all agreed ahead of transfer deadline but he was on international duty with the Netherlands. That will take manager Pep Guardiola's spending to around £107m so far this summer. 10th Jun 2025, 18:21 By Kostas Lianos Brighton signing wonderkid Brighton are set to land Olympiacos wonderkid Babis Kostoulas on Wednesday. SunSport understand Kostoulas, 18, is expected to undergo a medical tomorrow amid his imminent arrival to the UK today. According to Sky Sports, the deal is expected to cost £34million, which poses as a record for a Greek player. The Seagulls won the bidding war for the forward, who was also targeted by Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Aston Villa, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus and AC Milan. 10th Jun 2025, 17:20 By Kostas Lianos Jobe Bellingham fee Borussia Dortmund have signed Jobe Bellingham from Sunderland. Bellingham will cost an initial £27.8million but the fee could rise to a club-record £32m depending on appearances and performance levels. That would eclipse Ousmane Dembele's fee when he joined Dortmund from Rennes back in 2016. The midfielder is expected to withdraw from England's Under-21s squad for the Euros later this month so he can play at the Club World Cup for BVB. 10th Jun 2025, 16:30 By Kostas Lianos Transfer window update The mini transfer window will slam shut this evening at 7pm. However, the window will reopen before the start of the Premier League season. Clubs will be able to be active again from June 16. Newcastle ready to kickstart summer window with bid for £30m Premier League star

Newcastle United are keen to reinforce their squad for the 2025/26 campaign after securing Champions League football and Eddie Howe has identified a goalkeeper he wants to sign Newcastle have reportedly entered negotiations with Burnley over the signing of James Trafford. The Magpies have made a quiet start to the summer transfer window, with 18-year-old Antonio Cordero the only signing so far, but are ready to step things up. Newcastle will play in the Champions League next season and want to strengthen their squad following an encouraging campaign under Eddie Howe. The team finished fifth in the Premier League and won the Carabao Cup and Howe is keen to kick on in the 2025/26 season. ‌ Like other sides, they are restricted by the profit and sustainability rules and the free transfer of Cordero from Malaga is the only deal they have done in the first 10-day window before the Club World Cup. That is not for lack of trying, with Newcastle linked with Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, Brighton striker Joao Pedro and Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga. ‌ None of those players will be the first major summer signing, though, with Sky Sports reporting that the Magpies are in talks with Burnley over Trafford. Howe wants the Clarets keeper to join and challenge Nick Pope for the No.1 spot next season. Talks are still ongoing, with Burnley's valuation of £30million too high for Newcastle, who are keen to negotiate it down. The 22-year-old still has two years left on his Burnley contract and is poised to be the side's first-choice keeper when they begin the 2025/26 season in the Premier League following promotion from the Championship. Trafford played 45 of Burnley's 46 Championship games last season, keeping a staggering 29 clean sheets while playing behind the league's best defence. Scott Parker's side conceded just 16 goals in 46 games and only finished second behind Leeds on goal difference. Unlike Pope, Trafford is currently away with England, having been picked by Thomas Tuchel alongside first-choice keeper Jordan Pickford and Crystal Palace 's Dean Henderson. HAVE YOUR SAY! Would James Trafford be a good signing for Newcastle? Comment below. ‌ Pope, who is about to enter the final year of his Newcastle contract, has won 10 caps for his country, but, at 33, is 11 years older than Trafford, who could become his successor at St James' Park, with backup keeper Martin Dubravka 36. Explaining Newcastle's approach this summer last month, Howe said: "There's no doubt that's what the club's ambition is. But of course, as we've said many times, the ability financially to compete the last few years has been hampered by PSR, but those issues aren't there for the coming window. So I don't see any reason why we can't strengthen, not weaken ourselves. 'From my perspective, and I'm not in control of the finances, it all depends on the individual case. There in not a blanket, 'No, we're not going to break that'. Or, 'Yes, we are'. It depends on the individual and if the individual is worth doing that with, then I think you need to consider it and maybe implement it. 'But you have to be aware that every decision you make has a consequence. So, obviously, you have to think that through carefully.'
