Venus Williams To Partner-Up With Riley Opelka At US Open Mixed Doubles

News182 days ago
The 45-year-old American Williams, who returned to competitive action following a 16-month hiatus at the DC Open last week, will team up with Opelka at the Flushing Meadows.
The legendary Venus Williams was handed a wildcard entry into the mixed doubled event of the US Open as the American gears up to partner Riley Opelka at the Flushing Meadows in the final Grand Slam event of the year.
Williams, who made a comeback to competitive tennis after a sixteen-month hiatus at the DC Open last week, could also request for a wildcard in the singles event of the hard court major.
Williams triumphed over her compatriot Peyton Stearns 6-3, 6-4 in the opening round of the WTA event. This victory marked her 819th career WTA singles win for the seven-time Grand Slam champion, achieved in 97 minutes at the first US Open hardcourt tune-up event on home soil.
It was her first WTA singles triumph in over 700 days, with her last victory occurring against Veronika Kudermetova in the first round at Cincinnati in August 2023.
Williams became the oldest WTA match winner since Martina Navratilova, who was 47 at Wimbledon in 2004, and the oldest player to compete in a WTA tour-level match since Japan's Kimiko Date, who was 46 in Tokyo in 2017.
However, her return was cut short as she was defeated by Magdalena Frech in the second round of the women's singles event with a score of 6-2, 6-2.
Eight teams received direct entry into the field by combined singles rankings. These included top-ranked Jannik Sinner of Italy, the reigning US Open, Wimbledon, and Australian Open singles champion, paired with American Emma Navarro.
Other duos making the field based on rankings included Britain's fifth-ranked Jack Draper and Spain's Paula Badosa, Germany's third-ranked Alexander Zverev and Swiss Belinda Bencic, fourth-ranked American Taylor Fritz and Kazakhstan's Elena Rybakina, Dane Holger Rune and American Amanda Anisimova, 2021 US Open winner Daniil Medvedev and fellow Russian Mirra Andreeva, Americans Jessica Pegula and Tommy Paul, and Poland's Iga Swiatek and Norway's Casper Ruud.

Other wildcard entry teams include five-time Grand Slam singles champion and world number two Carlos Alcaraz of Spain with Britain's Emma Raducanu, Americans Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe, world women's doubles number one Taylor Townsend and fellow American Ben Shelton, Italians Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, and Serbians Olga Danilovic and Novak Djokovic, who has won a record 24 men's Grand Slam singles titles.

India bowled out for 224 in 1st innings of 5th Test against England

London, Aug 1 (PTI) Pacer Gus Atkinson grabbed five wickets as India collapsed on the second day morning of the fifth and final Test against England to be bowled out for 224 in their first innings, here on Friday. The overnight batters Karun Nair (57) and Washington Sundar (26) fell in the first 20 minutes of play which exposed the frail tail of the Indian team, which once again fell without much resistance. For England, Atkinson completed a five-for as he returned 21.4-8-33-5 while Josh Tongue took 3/57 as the two fast bowlers shared the majority of the workload for the hosts. India had earlier resumed the second day's play — which began earlier than the scheduled start owing to rains on the first day — at 204 for six. view comments First Published: August 01, 2025, 16:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. IND Vs ENG, 5th Test Day 2: Gus Atkinson Takes 5; India Bowled Out For 224

Last Updated: Pacer Gus Atkinson claimed five wickets as India were bowled out for 224 in their first innings on the second morning of the fifth Test against England. Pacer Gus Atkinson claimed five wickets as India collapsed on the second morning of the fifth and final Test against England, getting bowled out for 224 in their first innings on Friday. Overnight batters Karun Nair (57) and Washington Sundar (26) were dismissed within the first 20 minutes of play, exposing the fragile tail of the Indian team, which once again fell with little resistance. For England, Atkinson achieved a five-wicket haul with figures of 21.4-8-33-5, while Josh Tongue took 3/57, as the two fast bowlers carried most of the workload for the hosts. India had resumed the second day's play at 204 for six, starting earlier than scheduled due to rain on the first day. What Happened On Day 1? Karun Nair's resilient performance with an unbeaten 52 guided India to 204 for six on the rain-hit first day. On a pitch with a green tinge offering ample assistance to seamers, Nair's composed innings stood out amidst the frequent fall of wickets. He was accompanied by Washington Sundar, who remained not out on 19 at the close of play. Rain severely disrupted the proceedings, allowing only 64 overs to be bowled, most of which came during an extended final session. Key wickets fell late in India's innings, including Sai Sudharsan, who scored 38, and Ravindra Jadeja, who managed 9. Both batsmen were dismissed by Josh Tongue, who made the ball move away off the seam. Chris Woakes, who played in all five Tests, suffered a shoulder injury while fielding and is likely to miss the remainder of the match. Gus Atkinson, making his debut in the series, showcased good pace and control to claim two crucial wickets. Earlier in the day, India lost captain Shubman Gill for 21 to a runout after a brief post-rain restart. Gill's innings made him India's highest run-scorer in a single series, surpassing Sunil Gavaskar's record of 732 runs. India also lost Yashasvi Jaiswal (2) and KL Rahul (14) in the morning session, with Atkinson trapping Jaiswal LBW and Woakes dismissing Rahul via inside edge. Despite the interruptions and challenging pitch conditions, Nair remained steadfast. His innings, featuring seven boundaries including a stylish cover drive off Tongue, provided much-needed stability for India heading into Day 2. Brief scores: India 224 all out in 69.4 overs (Sai Sudharsan 38, Karun Nair 57; Gus Atkinson 5/33, Josh Tongue 3/57) vs England.
