Putting ‘soul' into every piece key to endurance

This year, Dunedin jeweller Tony Williams notches up 50 years of being in business in the city. He talks to business editor Sally Rae about his successful career.
Back in 1975, Tony Williams was told the life expectancy of a small business in New Zealand was five years.
Notching up a 50 year career as an artist craftsman, which has included manufacturing jewellery, employing, training, exporting, retailing and wholesaling, he has blown that timeframe out the window of his Dunedin workshop.
While semi-retired, Mr Williams (76) continues to make fabulous pieces from a bench he refers to as his "world" and he has an exhibition at the Otago Art Society later this month.
When it came to business success, the goldsmith and enamelist believed those that thought of it only in dollar terms had missed the point.
His tenure had been successful because he had made a living, which had varied from "being appalling to quite good". He had done some great work and he had a reputation that expanded outside New Zealand.
And it was a lot more than just an object that was being sold.
"If you haven't dripped blood — sometimes literally — into the piece, does it really have a soul?
"Being aware of that is part of how you survive."
Born in England, where his father Robert (known to his family as Robin) Williams was embarking on post-graduate study at Cambridge University, he was brought up in Wellington.
Robin was an influential civil servant and scientist who moved into university administration, taking the position of vice-chancellor at the University of Otago in 1967 where he oversaw a review of the struggling Otago Medical School.
Describing himself as "one of those kids who didn't know what to do", the young Mr Williams dropped out of university.
While there was some expectation, due to his father's standing, that he would complete his tertiary studies "and get a uni-type career", he said his father was supportive of his desire to get into jewellery making.
The significant arts and crafts movement in New Zealand at that time was at its peak. While he tried to get an apprenticeship, he was too old, as, because of the economics of the time, businesses could not afford to pay adult wages, rather than a youth rate.
His father made some inquiries and Mr Williams returned to England where he trained at the Birmingham School of Jewellery, receiving an honours diploma in jewellery and a diploma in gem diamonds.
He later worked for Anglo-Italian jewellery designer Andrew Grima in London, the leading contemporary jeweller of the time and whose clients included members of the British Royal Family.
It was a large workshop, with 20 or so staff, and Mr Williams thought he once saw the late Princess Margaret — a major customer — walk through the workshop.
At lunchtime, staff were allowed to remain in the workshop and work on their own designs, but if anyone came through the workshop, they had to drop their own pieces — and their lunch — and quickly return to working on Grima designs.
Returning to New Zealand, Mr Williams set up in a historic stone cottage in Port Chalmers, where the rent was the princely sum of $8 a week.
The trade was very supportive, and it was also very strong; he recalled doing a headcount of retail jewellers in Dunedin and reaching 27, not counting those in South Dunedin.
Dunedin jeweller John Bezett convinced him to join the local jewellers and watchmakers branch, and he also had "a foot in both camps" — which was uncommon then — as he was also on the executive of the crafts council.
He attributed that to one of the reasons why his business endured, as he had always been able to cater to "both ends of the spectrum".
As well as top-end pieces, he also liked to be able to find something for people who did not have much money, and the mix also provided some cashflow.
In 1989, Mr Williams received an Arts Council grant for overseas study which he used to further his skills in enamelling, visiting workshops in Italy and Scotland and working for a firm in London where objet d'art were also created, some destined for the Sultan of Brunei.
In 1990, he was commended in the enamelling section of the London Goldsmiths' Hall Competitions.
When Mr Williams first looked at exporting, he planned to target England, but he discovered it was too far away. Diamond merchants told him he would need to be there at least twice a year, and it was too expensive and too far to go.
So, in the 1990s, he started focusing on Australia, promising himself he would go at least twice a year, which he did for about 15 years.
Door-knocking at first, he slowly established a few firms, and his work ended up being commissioned by some leading retailers.
One reason for his success across the Tasman was the fact he did things nobody else would tackle — "fairly impossible stuff", he said.
A later move into the Moray Chambers in the city coincided with changes in the Australian market but he had always ensured he had "kept things rolling" back home.
When his landlord doubled the rent — "during the Global Financial Crisis, rents in Dunedin were horrendous" — he moved to the Carnegie Centre and the business became much more retail-oriented.
After six years, he decided to move to a workshop next to his home where he has remained for the past 10 years.
There was romance involved in working with precious stones and metals.
Even as a small boy, he was a romantic and he quipped he was almost able to recite The Hobbit, long before Sir Peter Jackson adapted it to the screen.
He was looking forward to his exhibition at the art society from July 18-27, his first show for about 18 months. He had some new pieces which he was very pleased with.
He still also enjoyed helping anyone who was interested in learning about the jewellery trade, most recently teaching an 11-year-old girl how to make a pair of earrings.

Vanished World Centre is getting a facelift. The Waitaki Whitestone Geopark had raised roughly $450,000 to redevelop "the heart of the geopark", general manager Lynley Browne said. "This is a real testament to the work of many people for many, many years. "All the work of Ewan Fordyce, all the work of the volunteers, all the work of the University of Otago geology department and all the others who have believed in it." The money has come from the New Zealand Lotteries Commission, Otago Community Trust, Waitaki District Council, Alexander McMillan Trust and savings from the centre before they became part of the geopark. It was important for the quality of the exhibition to match the quality of the fossil collection, Ms Browne said. "What we're showcasing is world class, but we don't have a world class display. "We want to make it more interactive, more contemporary, more engaging." They already have a concept and most of the redevelopment will be internal. "We want to move as quickly as we can." Waitaki Whitestone Geopark Trust chairman Mauriri Kimura-McGlinchey was excited about the redevelopment. "We're really happy to see it going ahead and see this happening. "It's going to be an absolute gem to see it done up a little bit more and having some extras put into it. "I think it's going to be great for Duntroon, the Vanished World Centre and the wider Waitaki." The centre was a fantastic asset to the geopark and the district. "I don't know of many fossil hubs around New Zealand that are regional. "It's the centre point of our region being smack in the middle of it and it's a beacon for our geopark." Mr Kimura-McGlinchey said it was the volunteers who made it worth visiting. "It's all well and good to have a development and to have a building, but we need people in that building and in that development to share those stories. "If there is no-one in there to tell those stories, it will be just a building." The late University of Otago palaeontologist Prof Ewan Fordyce was instrumental in the formation of Vanished World. He teamed up with landowners in the 1980s to put many of the fossils from the area on display. The Vanished World Incorporated Society was formed in 2000. Prof Fordyce's wife Marilyn said the centre and its trail were very important to him. "Vanished World provided the opportunity to inform others of the richness of this spectacular and unique location once buried under the sea. "He appreciated the support from locals and the generosity of landowners who allowed access, all of whom were curious about their area and Ewan's research. "A partnership developed allowing for the possibility of creating a centre to share an understanding of the significance and uniqueness of this locality with the public." She fondly remembers the day they learned the geopark's Unesco designation was confirmed in 2023. "It was wonderful that after all his years working in the area Ewan learned of this success before he died in November that year. "I'll never forget his big smile that day."

Employees in the small western European country, which has a population of around 680,000, earn an average of $19,264 over 26 annual leave days and 11 national public holidays. The Nordic countries also rank as the most generous nations for paid leave, making up the rest of the top five: Norway ($17,332), Denmark ($14,559), Sweden ($14,223), and Iceland ($13,788). Paula O'Kane, an associate professor at the University of Otago, said New Zealand's 31 days of paid leave was not a bad number overall. '[It] equates to over half a day a working week, which should be sufficient for most people to get sufficient R&R … [but] given what we know about the [younger] generations, they value their time off more, so this could be detrimental to the brain drain we are currently suffering in New Zealand.' O'Kane said more leave doesn't automatically equate to better well-being. 'Organisational culture and the way you are treated at work is likely to impact your wellbeing. 'Many organisations will offer unpaid leave for bigger trips or other circumstances; again, this is part of organisational culture.' At the foot of the table, the United States has no nationwide law allowing workers paid vacation or public holidays. Instead, these benefits are generally a matter of agreement between an employer and an employee, according to the US Department of Labor. The US is among five countries, including Britain, Japan, the Netherlands and Guyana, that offer zero entitled paid public holidays. Under British law, an employee is not entitled to be paid more, or given a day in lieu, for working a bank or public holiday. However, workers are legally entitled to 28 paid annual leave days. Japan and Guyana offer just 10 and 12 paid vacation days respectively. Meanwhile, Yemen is the best country for statutory leave, offering 30 annual leave days and 16 public holidays (46 days total). However, the average worker earns just $185 over that period. In Europe, Austria leads the way with 43 paid days off in total, comprising 30 days of annual leave and 13 public holidays. Austrian workers earn an average $12,456 in paid leave, ranking sixth highest in Moorepay's study. Venezuela offers the most paid public holidays with 23, while Cambodia, Myanmar, and Azerbaijan offer above 20. Moorepay's study used the average income in each country and the adjusted net income per capita, according to World Bank data.

Taranaki Science Symposium: Can Science And Innovation Fuel New Billion-dollar Industries In Taranaki?

The launch of the first Taranaki Science Symposium marks a significant step toward establishing Taranaki as a regional hub for new research and innovation. Presented by the Taranaki Applied Innovation Centre, a new initiative led by Te Puna Umanga Venture Taranaki, the regional development agency, the event aims to support science, research, and emerging technologies in the region. Taking place at the New Plymouth Club Auditorium on Thursday 11 September, the event welcomes anyone with an interest in science and innovation, from academics and business professionals to students and community leaders. "While AI is getting all of the hype at the moment, it's biotechnology and other emerging innovations that are quietly seeing huge amounts of investment and commercial success across Aotearoa," says Thom Adams, Innovation Lead at Te Puna Umanga Venture Taranaki. Investment is flowing from both public and private sectors. In 2022, Paeroa-based company AgriSea New Zealand received a $750,000 loan from the Government's Regional Strategic Partnership Fund towards establishing the world's first commercial seaweed-based nanocellulose manufacturing plant. "The exciting thing about AgriSea is that there are so many high value markets for nanocellulose. It can be used in bio-composites, cosmetics, wound care, and tissue engineering. It's a huge economic opportunity and, what's even more exciting, is that it's a sustainable product." Meanwhile, companies like Wellington-based Bontia Bio are using new techniques like precision fermentation to develop new products for pet flea and tick treatments, tapping into a global market worth billions. "These examples highlight what is possible," Adams says. "We have brilliant people here in Taranaki performing world-leading research. The problem is that they're often either poorly funded or working in isolation. The Symposium is about sparking conversations, and building connections and capabilities across science, tech, industry, and communities in the region." Attendees at the event will hear from inspiring speakers at the forefront of emerging technologies, including: Dr Miles Benton, a Taranaki-based bioinformatician who helped pioneer a portable, low-cost DNA sequencing kit with Oxford Nanopore Technologies. Miles is a passionate advocate for accessible gene sequencing technology that gives communities control over their own local genetic knowledge. Kaiah Bloor (Taranaki, Ngāti Ruanui, Ngāruahine), is Kaiārahi Pūtaiao (Science Lead) at the University of Otago. Kaiah supports Māori science students across Aotearoa and is part of the Wool Gadgets research team at the University of Otago, which transforms low-value wool into innovative new products. Stacey Hitchcock, Deputy CE/General Manager of Investment at Te Puna Umanga Venture Taranaki, says that there is untapped potential in the region. "You never know where the next big idea will come from, or where the next billion-dollar idea is hiding," says Hitchcock. "We have a unique and diverse region with some of the brightest and curious minds - it's a huge, missed opportunity if we don't provide a platform for them." Hitchcock adds that Taranaki also has expertise in complementary industries such as agriculture, engineering, and manufacturing. "As a region, we're well placed to take advantage of our strengths. This event, and the efforts of the Taranaki Applied Innovation Centre, are key avenues for us to start connecting the dots between those strengths." The symposium will also feature an open mic session for sharing ideas, and breakout discussions over morning tea, providing time and space to explore future research and innovation opportunities.
