Stephen Colbert's The Late Show is cancelled by CBS

CBS is cancelling The Late Show With Stephen Colbert next May, shuttering a decades-old TV institution in a changing media landscape and removing from air one of President Donald Trump's most prominent and persistent late-night critics. CBS said Late Show was canceled for financial reasons, not for content. But the timing — three days after Colbert criticized the settlement between Trump and Paramount Global, parent company of CBS, over a 60 Minutes story — led two U.S. senators to publicly question the motives. Stephen Colbert told his audience at New York's Ed Sullivan Theater that he had learned Wednesday night that, after a decade on air, 'next year will be our last season. … It's the end of 'The Late Show' on CBS. I'm not being replaced. This is all just going away.' The audience responded with boos and groans. 'Yeah, I share your feelings,' the 61-year-old comic said. Three top Paramount and CBS executives praised Colbert's show as 'a staple of the nation's zeitgeist' in a statement that said the cancellation 'is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.' In his Monday monologue, Stephen Colbert said he was 'offended' by the $16 million settlement reached by Paramount, whose pending sale to Skydance Media needs the Trump administration's approval. He said the technical name in legal circles for the deal was 'big fat bribe.' 'I don't know if anything — anything — will repair my trust in this company,' Colbert said. 'But, just taking a stab at it, I'd say $16 million would help.' Trump had sued Paramount Global over how 60 Minutes edited its interview last fall with Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris. Critics say the company settled primarily to clear a hurdle to the Skydance sale. The president — a longtime target of Colbert — on Friday said on Truth Social that 'I absolutely love' that Colbert was 'fired.' In his message, he insulted the late-night hosts on ABC, CBS and NBC. 'I hear (ABC's) Jimmy Kimmel is next,' Trump wrote. 'Has even less talent than Colbert. (Fox News Channel's) Greg Gutfeld is better than all of them, including the Moron on NBC who ruined the once great Tonight show.' Stephen Colbert took over The Late Show in 2015 after becoming a big name in comedy and news satire working on Comedy Central with Jon Stewart on The Daily Show and hosting The Colbert Report, which riffed on right-wing talk shows. The guests on his very first show in September 2015 were actor George Clooney and Jeb Bush, who was then struggling in his Republican presidential primary campaign against Trump. 'Gov. Bush was the governor of Florida for eight years,' Colbert told his audience. 'And you would think that that much exposure to oranges and crazy people would have prepared him for Donald Trump. Evidently not.' The most recent ratings from Nielsen show Colbert gaining viewers so far this year and winning his timeslot among broadcasters, with about 2.417 million viewers across 41 new episodes. On Tuesday, Colbert's Late Show landed its sixth Emmy nomination for outstanding talk show. It won a Peabody Award in 2021. David Letterman began hosting The Late Show in 1993. When Colbert took over, he deepened its engagement with politics. Alongside musicians and movie stars, Colbert often welcomes politicians to his couch. Democratic U.S. Sen. Adam Schiff of California was a guest on Thursday night. Schiff said on X that 'if Paramount and CBS ended the Late Show for political reasons, the public deserves to know. And deserves better.' Democratic U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts released a similar statement. Colbert's counterpart on ABC, Kimmel, posted 'Love you Stephen' on Instagram and directed an expletive at CBS. 'I'm just as shocked as everyone,' NBC Tonight show host Jimmy Fallon said Friday on Instagram. 'Stephen is one of the sharpest, funniest hosts to ever do it. I really thought I'd ride this out with him for years to come.' 'They're trying to silence people, but that won't work. Won't work. We will just get louder,' actor Jamie Lee Curtis, who has previously criticized Trump and is set to visit Colbert's show in coming days, told the AP. Late-night TV has been facing economic pressures for years; ratings and ad revenue are down and many young viewers prefer highlights online, which networks have trouble monetizing. CBS also recently canceled host Taylor Tomlinson's After Midnight, which aired after The Late Show. Still, Colbert had led the network late-night competition for years. And while NBC has acknowledged economic pressures by eliminating the band on Seth Meyers' show and cutting one night of Jimmy Fallon's The Tonight Show, there had been no such visible efforts at The Late Show. Colbert's relentless criticism of Trump, his denunciation of the settlement, and the parent company's pending sale can't be ignored, said Bill Carter, author of The Late Shift. 'If CBS thinks people are just going to swallow this, they're really deluded,' Carter said. Andy Cohen, who began his career at CBS and now hosts Watch What Happens Live, said in an interview: 'It is a very sad day for CBS that they are getting out of the late-night race. I mean, they are turning off the lights after the news.'

Coldplay Kiss Cam Scandal: Did Mercury Retrograde spark Andy Byron's affair with HR Chief? Astrologers weigh in

A romantic concert moment that should have faded into the crowd's applause has instead exploded into one of the internet's most talked-about scandals. During Coldplay's July 16 show at Gillette Stadium, a brief on-camera embrace between Astronomer CEO Andy Byron and Chief People Officer Kristin Cabot triggered accusations of infidelity, corporate fallout, and now, speculation about astrology's role in the debacle. As the video of the now-infamous 'Coldplay kiss cam' racked up millions of views online, some observers began pointing fingers not just at the people involved, but at the planets themselves. Could Mercury Retrograde, an astrological period infamous for stirring confusion and public mishaps, be responsible for turning a discreet relationship into a global spectacle? As the British band played a romantic number, cameras panned to couples in the crowd. That's when Byron and Cabot were captured hugging intimately, seemingly unaware of the public attention. Lead singer Chris Martin, in an offhand remark, joked, 'Either they're having an affair or they're just really shy,' not knowing the personal and professional upheaval his comment would trigger. Soon after, social media detectives identified the pair, sparking waves of commentary around ethics in the workplace, infidelity, and leadership accountability. Coldplay Cheating Scandal Meets the Stars While public discourse continues to dissect the implications for Astronomer and its leadership team, astrologers have added an unexpected twist to the narrative. Live Events According to celebrity astrologer Aliza Kelly, the events may be part of a larger cosmic mishap caused by Mercury's current retrograde. 'There's drama in the air,' Kelly warned days before the concert, pointing to the timing of Mercury retrograde occurring in the zodiac sign Leo, known for spectacle, performance, and ego clashes. 'During this phase, expect life to get a little more annoying: tech glitches, scheduling mix-ups, delayed flights, and a whole lot of miscommunication.' Some netizens have even labeled the Coldplay concert couple as the 'first high-profile Mercury Retrograde victims of the summer,' citing their bewildered expressions and clumsy retreat from the stadium spotlight, as mentioned in a report by News18. What Is Mercury Retrograde? Mercury Retrograde is a well-known astronomical and astrological phenomenon that occurs when the planet Mercury appears to move backward in the sky from Earth's perspective. This visual illusion happens because of the difference in orbital speeds between Earth and Mercury. Astrologers interpret this period, usually lasting about three weeks, as a time of disorder and reflection. Mercury rules communication, travel, and technology, so its retrograde is often blamed for misunderstandings, missed appointments, lost items, and embarrassing blunders. The current cycle began earlier this month, precisely aligning with the time of the Coldplay concert. A String of Misfortunes or Cosmic Alignment? As the Coldplay kiss cam footage circulated online, it triggered a series of unfortunate events. Byron, reportedly married to education administrator Megan Kerrigan, faced scrutiny for public intimacy with Cabot, who finalized her divorce in 2022. Observers noted that several senior Astronomer employees, including Cabot, went silent on social media and even disappeared from LinkedIn. An HR scandal, a viral video, and mounting workplace allegations—some anonymous, about Byron's alleged toxic leadership, followed. All these developments echo astrologers' warning: Mercury Retrograde doesn't just cause personal inconveniences, but can also create very public embarrassment. Astrologer Stephanie Campos commented on the situation, stating, 'Leo is a fire sign and governs public image and drama. A retrograde through Leo often pulls the curtains back. Anything hidden tends to be exposed—and often theatrically.' From Viral Footage to Workplace Fallout A Coldplay fan named Grace Springer, who filmed the moment, later expressed conflicted emotions. 'A part of me feels bad for turning people's lives upside down,' she said. 'But I also hope their partners find the healing they deserve.' Springer described herself as a megafan who captured the moment innocently, unaware of the identities of Byron and Cabot. Yet in the days since, her video has become a viral symbol of unintended consequences—what some are calling a 'celestial ambush.' Her statement, 'Play stupid games, win stupid prizes,' has since been adopted as a viral catchphrase underscoring the scandal. Social Media Questions Cosmic Coincidence As users tried to make sense of the moment, astrology memes and commentary began circulating online. One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, 'Coldplay kiss cam. Mercury retrograde. Leo season. The drama was written in the stars.' Another commented, 'Embarrassing? Yep. Public? Very. Classic Mercury Rx chaos.' Still others turned to astrology as a lens to reflect on their own recent faux pas during the retrograde phase. 'I showed up at the wrong wedding venue last week. Maybe Andy Byron and I aren't so different,' quipped a viral post. Lessons from the Planets Astrologers advise caution during Mercury Retrograde—not just in love and leadership, but in everyday life. 'This isn't a curse,' Kelly said. 'It's a cosmic invitation to slow down, reflect, and proceed with mindfulness.' She added that the Coldplay concert fallout, while dramatic, could be a valuable reminder for individuals and organizations alike: 'Transparency matters. Authenticity matters. And during Mercury Retrograde, the truth has a habit of bursting into the open—often on a jumbotron .' How to Navigate This Cosmic Cycle Experts suggest the best strategy during this time is to avoid hasty decisions and think carefully before speaking or acting. Miscommunication is more likely, and seemingly minor actions—like attending a concert—can spiral into something much larger. Avoid signing contracts, launching major projects, or starting new relationships until the retrograde ends, astrologers advise. Instead, use the period to review, re-evaluate, and resolve any lingering issues. As Coldplay's Chris Martin sang to a packed stadium, 'Nobody said it was easy.' Perhaps Mercury Retrograde just made sure no one would forget it. FAQs Who filmed the Coldplay kiss cam moment? The viral video was recorded by concertgoer Grace Springer, a Coldplay megafan. She stated she had no idea who the couple was when filming and later said, 'A part of me feels bad,' after learning about the consequences. How did Coldplay's lead singer react at the moment? Chris Martin made an offhand comment from the stage, joking, 'Either they're having an affair or they're just really shy,' which added to the public interest and debate once the couple was identified.

Exclusive - Shivam Khajuria on Prem's emotional dilemma in Anupamaa; says 'He never imagined their reunion would happen under such circumstances'

The post-leap phase of Anupamaa continues to stir deep emotions, and the recent twist involving Raahi and Anupamaa's unexpected reunion has added a fresh layer of intensity. At the center of this emotional storm is Prem, played by Shivam Khajuria, who finds himself caught between past wounds and present loyalties. Speaking about the track, Shivam shared, 'Prem is clearly tensed seeing Raahi and Anupamaa meet after so long, especially in a high-stakes situation like a competition. He never imagined their reunion would happen under such emotionally charged circumstances. While he didn't intend for them to cross paths like this, he left it to fate—believing that if a meeting was meant to happen, it would. He didn't inform either of them in advance, fearing that the emotional weight of it might cause one of them to back out. ' This moment is a turning point for the narrative, as years of distance, silence, and unresolved emotions come to the surface. Shivam's portrayal of Prem who tries to bridge two women he deeply cares for without imposing his choices adds emotional depth to the storyline. As Anupamaa unfolds further, viewers can expect more powerful scenes as the characters navigate this delicate reunion. Shivam Khajuria's grounded performance and layered approach to Prem have been drawing praise, solidifying his role as a key emotional anchor in the show's new chapter. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Are Watching Tariffs - Few Are Watching What Nvidia Just Launched Seeking Alpha Read More Undo Shivam Khajuria started his acting journey with the television show Molkki, where he played the character of Naveen.
