Qatar's cabinet nod to law on volunteering in GCC
Doha, Qatar: Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Defense Affairs HE Sheikh Saoud bin Abdulrahman bin Hassan Al-Thani chaired the Cabinet's regular meeting held on Wednesday at the Amiri Diwan.
Following the meeting, Minister of Justice and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs HE Ibrahim bin Ali Al Mohannadi stated the following:
The Cabinet reviewed the topics on its agenda. It approved - in principle - a draft law issuing a unified system (law) for volunteering work in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, and a draft of its executive regulations. The two drafts' preparation comes within the framework of the Ministry of Social Development and Family's strategy, which aims to enhance social responsibility, spread the culture of volunteering in society, organize volunteering work, ensure its practice with freedom and choice, preserve the rights of volunteers and volunteering organizations, and define the duties of each of them.
The Cabinet also approved the draft Cabinet Decision to add a member to the Steering Committee of the Qatar Internet Exchange Point project, established by Decision No. (24) of 2018. Prepared by the Communications Regulatory Authority, this draft aims to connect financial institutions subject to the supervision of the Qatar Central Bank to the Internet Exchange Point, in a way that ensures business continuity in the financial sector and supports its vital requirements.
The Cabinet approved a draft agreement between the Government of the State of Qatar and the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) regarding the establishment and financing of a regional office for UNITAR in the State of Qatar; a draft core contribution agreement between the Qatar Fund for Development of the State of Qatar and the United Nations World Food Program for multilateral funding for the years 2025-2026; a draft letter of intent between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Qatar and the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs of the Swiss Confederation in the field of mediation and facilitation; a draft memorandum of understanding in the field of Islamic jurisprudence and Islamic affairs between the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs of the State of Qatar and the International Islamic Fiqh Academy of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation; and a draft air services agreement between the Government of the State of Qatar and the Government of the Republic of Nauru.
The Cabinet concluded the weekly meeting by reviewing a report on the outcomes of the participation of Qatar's delegation, headed by HE the Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, in the 16th International Economic Forum "Russia-Islamic World: Kazan Forum' (Republic of Tatarstan - May 2025), regarding which it took the appropriate decision.

Syria and Hamas deny Israel captured group's fighters in raid
Syria's Interior Ministry and Hamas on Thursday denied that Israel had seized members of the Palestinian militant group during an overnight raid in southern Syria. The Israeli army said its operation in Beit Jinn, 50km south-west of Damascus, was 'based on intelligence gathered in recent weeks' and led to the arrest of 'several Hamas terrorists' who were allegedly plotting 'multiple terror attacks' against Israel and its military. It said the detainees, who were not identified, were transferred to Israel for questioning. 'This is completely untrue, it's a Zionist propaganda. The Hamas movement does not have any members in Syria, so how would that be the case?' a Hamas officials told The National. 'It's completely untrue and we would release an official statement if it was, no matter what the case.' A representative of Syria 's Interior Ministry also rejected Israel's claim. 'The detainees are civilians, they're not fighters,' they told The National. Broadcaster Syria TV reported that about 100 Israeli soldiers in 10 vehicles stormed the town of Beit Jinn. The Israeli troops killed one person during the raid, the channel added. The raid comes as Israel has increased operations in southern Syria following weeks of relative calm. Israel launched waves of air strikes across Syria after rebel groups toppled the Bashar Al Assad regime in early December, destroying large parts of the Syrian army's weapons stockpile and seizing territory in the south. Israel has expressed distrust towards Syria's new authorities, led by President Ahmad Al Shara, a former Al Qaeda commander-turned-statesman, who has pledged to govern the fractured country inclusively and unify all of Syria's armed groups under a single command structure. Mr Al Shara's government has adopted a pragmatic approach towards Israel, with the President revealing during a visit to France last month that his country was engaged in indirect talks with the Israelis. But tension flared again in early June after projectiles were fired from southern Syria into Israeli territory. Israel retaliated with air strikes on June 8 – the first in nearly month – which it said killed a Hamas member on the outskirts of Beit Jinn.

Iran's Khamenei alive; Revolutionary Guards chief Hossein Salami killed in Israeli attack
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is alive and is being continuously briefed about the situation, a security source told Reuters, following an Israeli attack on Iran early on Friday. Iranian state media confirmed on Friday the killing of Revolutionary Guards Commander Hossein Salami in the attack. Friday's attack also killed nuclear scientists Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani and Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi. Iran is planning to 'give a harsh response' to Israeli attack launched early on Friday against its nuclear programme, an Iranian security said. "The response to the Israeli attack will be harsh and decisive," the official said, adding that details of Iran's retaliation "are being discussed at the highest levels" when asked whether the attack would be imminent.
