Lions rugby squad nearly at full strength ahead of tour opener against Argentina
Associated Press The British & Irish Lions reported a clean bill of health after returning from their training camp in Portugal, with 15 players who featured in domestic finals at the weekend joining up with the squad Monday ahead of the tour opener against Argentina. It meant only one selected player — Scotland fullback Blair Kinghorn — was yet to link up with the Lions squad. Kinghorn remains on club duty with Toulouse, which is competing in the Top 14 semifinals in the France league on Friday, and could be away for a further week if his team reaches the final. Otherwise, Lions coach Andy Farrell appears to be in a strong position at the end of the club season in Britain and Ireland, with his contingent of players from English teams Bath and Leicester — who met in the Premiership final on Saturday — and Irish province Leinster — who won the URC final on Saturday — seemingly in healthy enough shape. Three Leinster players — scrumhalf Jamison Gibson-Park, prop Tadhg Furlong and fullback Hugo Keenan — didn't play in the 32-7 win over the Bulls but were still in line to join up with the Lions. The returning 15 will take part in their first training session with the Lions on Tuesday, the team said. If any of those players do feature against Argentina in Dublin on Friday, their involvement will likely be limited. Because of the reduced number of players at the six-day training camp in Quinta do Lago, Farrell called up England front-rowers Jamie George and Asher Opoku-Fordjour to help with practice sessions. They will train for the last time Monday before returning to their clubs, the Lions said. After the Argentina game, the Lions will fly Down Under for a nine-match tour of Australia containing three tests against the Wallabies. ___ AP soccer:

Two-time Indy 500 winner Newgarden flips car, walks away from wreck in IndyCar race at Gateway
MADISON, Ill. -- Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Josef Newgarden flipped his car upside down during Sunday night's race at Gateway outside St. Louis. Newgarden crashed midway through the race after contact with Louis Foster. Foster spun into the wall and shot across the track, stopping directly in Newgarden's path. Newgarden was unable to avoid the direct collision and his car launched into the air, damaged the SAFER barrier, landed on its roof and then skidded for a considerable distance. The IndyCar safety crew immediately helped Newgarden from his car and he radioed his Team Penske crew he was fine. IndyCar's safety team had to turn the No. 2 Chevrolet back on its wheels after Newgarden was out of the car and the race was under yellow for the clean up. 'I got a bit of a wiggle ... got a bit too high and went into the marbles," Foster said. 'I just couldn't stop the car from spinning and, obviously, a pretty scary impact with myself and Josef. I'm glad he is OK." Newgarden declined to comment after he was released from the medical center. Earlier in the race, Newgarden teammate Will Power crashed when a cut tire caused him to hit the wall. Power had started on the pole. Team Penske is winless this season. Kyle Kirkwood of Andretti Global won for the second consecutive race, third of the season. Only Kirkwood and two-time reigning IndyCar champion Alex Palou have won this season. Palou has five wins.

Cunha, Jesus score in 1st half as Botafogo holds on to beat Sounders 2-1 in Club World Cup
SEATTLE (AP) — Jair Cunha and Igor Jesus scored in the first half and Botafogo beat the Seattle Sounders 2-1 at the Club World Cup on Sunday night. Botafogo opened the scoring 28 minutes into the game as Cunha headed in a pass from Alex Telles. It came after a contentious yellow card to Nouhou Tolo gave the visitors a direct free kick just beyond the corner of the penalty box. Sounders players felt the call was unfair as there had been some unobserved jostling between Tolo and Artur before Tolo shoved his opponent to the ground. Botafogo doubled the lead in the first half's final minutes with another headed goal. Vitinho connected with his 24-year-old star teammate Igor Jesus, who sent a powerful header to the bottom corner. The Sounders played better in the second half, buoyed by their energetic subs. Four minutes after coming into the match, Paul Rothrock provided the assist for Christian Roldan's header in the 75th minute that deflected off Jesus. Key Moment The Sounders had two shots on target in a row in the final 30 seconds of stoppage time to try to tie the score, but the first was well blocked by a defender before John smothered Rothrock's attempt. Takeaways Seattle will now have to try to win points off the perceived titans of Group B, Atlético Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain to avoid going out in the group stage. Botafogo played good defense to hold onto its lead and is second in Group B on goal difference. What they said 'Obviously, they're a great team, and they put us under pressure in moments, but we matched them. The difference in the first half was just quality and a couple of key moments… I think if you looked at the statistics, you would say that Sounders were in a good spot, but obviously everything is the score line, and we couldn't find that second goal.' — Seattle Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer 'The second half, in terms of our defense, it was not good. We didn't take possession and … Seattle scored a goal with some luck, but it was deserved.' — Botafogo head coach Renato Paiva ___ AP soccer:
