Millionaire cruise sells cabins for $86m each
Cruise companies are embracing the growing trend of people who want to live full-time at sea by building residential ships instead of pure holiday vessels.
More and more people, particularly retirees, are choosing a full-time cruise ship life as a way of seeing the world without the nuisance of maintaining a home and other associated costs of living on land.
Many even claim that full-time cruise living done right can be more economical because it includes accommodation, utilities and food at a set price all while enabling 'residents' to see the world at a fraction of the price of traditional holidays.
Proactive cruise companies recognising the birth of a new sector have begun investing in the construction of residential ships where people can actually buy suites onboard.
Residential cruise ships are appealing to those seeking a full-time cruise lifestyle because it removes the need the hop from ship to ship and live among traditional holiday-seekers.
Prices vary for residential cruise ships but many companies are catering for the higher end of the market.
Scottish company Clydebuilt is one such company looking to the future and aiming to lock in a cashed up clientele.
Clydebuilt is in the process of building a 230m-long residential ship which will include 236 suites across 12 decks.
The ship, Dark Island, is set to launch in 2028 and will feature suites of one-to-three bedrooms that range in size from 39sq m to 250sq m … but they come at a cost.
Suites can be designed to a buyer's needs and specifications with prices starting at AUD $8.7 million depending on size, location and views from the ship.
The most expensive accommodations top out at a hefty price tag of AUD $86.3 million but the cost doesn't stop there.
Residents aboard Dark Island will also need to pay a daily fee which covers food, shore excursions and running costs.
Residents in the two-person Glencoe suite will need to cough up an additional AUD $2400 a day or AUD $876,000 a year while those in the four-person Hebridean will by stung for AUD $6600 a day or AUD $2.4 million annually.

Dark Island will include three restaurants, deck areas, a spa, driving range and putting green, theatre, gym, pool, library and shops.
Scheduled events and classes will keep residents busy while at sea and the maximum capacity of 724 guests will be looked after by 540 crew.
Dark Island's maiden voyage will see the ship depart Southampton in the UK for a three-year cruise around the world followed by an itinerary the follows the routes of historical explorers James Cook, Christopher Columbus and Ferdinand Magellan.
Subsequent itineraries will then be subject to voting from residents.
The ship will also have its own medical staff and facilities, including a stored helicopter for emergency use.
Clydebuilt is just one of many companies going down the residential cruise ship path.
Storylines' MV Narrative, another residential cruise ship, is scheduled to depart in 2027.
Reportedly, residents must be worth at least $10 million to gain entry and be sponsored by someone already living aboard.
US woman Debra Kilgore has no qualms about sailing the world by herself. In fact, she bought a AUD $2.9 million apartment aboard the ultraluxe MV Narrative.
The MV Narrative has 530 furnished apartments, which range from 22-to-183 sqm and start at $US1 million for a studio and up to $US8 million for a split-level four-bedroom.

Scroll horizontally to view full table Ten years ago, I bought myself a used 2010 Volkswagen Golf GTI. It was one of the quickest P-plate legal cars you could buy at the time, and it was the car that taught me how to change oil and wiper blades. Things spiralled, and it eventually became a project, much to the dismay of my parents, whose driveway it sat on. With the car on jackstands, I taught myself how to pull the engine, upgrade the turbo, intercooler, suspension, and even a thing or two about engine software management. It was in those few years that I learnt how a car worked, and I wouldn't be the same automotive writer I am today had I not spent hours of my life lying on my back under that Golf GTI in my parents' driveway. What I'm trying to say is that I'm a Volkswagen nut, but also their biggest critic. That brings me to the new Golf R MK8.5, which arrives more than a decade after my humble GTI hit the production line in Wolfsburg, Germany. Volkswagen hosted a group of media for a drive through the New South Wales Central West from Orange to the Blue Mountains and then Sydney Motorsport Park. The 2025 Volkswagen Golf R is priced from AUD$70,990 before on-road costs in Australia, while the blacked-out Golf R Black Edition is priced from AUD$72,490 before on-road costs. If you want a little more theatre, the Warmenau Package (AUD$6,500) can be optioned and comes with an Akrapovič titanium exhaust and real carbon décor. I was shocked to find capacitive touch buttons on the steering wheel! While the new Volkswagen Golf GTI has steered away from this, the Golf R has retained them. I found this odd because Andreas Mindt, VW Head of Design, was recently asked about this and said 'We will never, ever make this mistake any more. On the steering wheel, we will have physical buttons. No guessing any more,' in an interview with Autocar in March. Besides that giant 12.9-inch infotainment display, the rest of the interior will look very familiar to those who have spent time in the MK8 R. You get heated and ventilated front seats finished in Nappa leather with blue decorative stitching and three-position memory. We spent more than four hours in the car during the drive route and they were perfectly comfortable. Materials are only okay, and generally shared with the Golf GTI (even the base model) in key areas. Everything in your eyeline is wrapped in some form of fabric or leather, which is something I can't say for other brands. However, things start to get very scratchy and plastic the further down you look in the cabin. The biggest offender is the door, which is almost entirely plastic. I'm not sure that I'd want to take a ride in the back seats for longer than 2 hours, although the rear centre armrest with cupholders and two rear (45W fast-charging) USB-C ports and AC vents would help make the trip a little more comfortable. This is complemented by a 10.2-inch digital cluster with custom views and a head-up display. There are a handful of shortcut buttons on the top of the display to access drive modes, parking systems, safety, vehicle settings, and the main menu. Then, a second row is used at the bottom to shortcut your recirculation, A/C, climate, and seat cooling and heating. Finally, below this are your slide controls to adjust temperature and volume, and lower in the cabin near the air vents, more hard buttons for safety, parking, climate, and drive modes. Your headlight controls are positioned on a panel on the right-hand side of the cabin behind the steering wheel, but you're probably never going to touch them. There are two USB-C ports in the front, two in the rear, and a wireless charging dock that couldn't fit my iPhone 16 Pro Max with a case on it. Other important features include LED lighting with 30 selectable colours, LED footwell lighting (colour-selectable), reading lights (front and rear, LED), LED vanity mirrors (driver + passenger), and three-zone automatic air conditioning. Knowing this, the new Golf R adds R-Performance Torque Vectoring to its 4MOTION all-wheel drive system. This is a tricky rear differential that can send 50 per cent of power to the rear differential and then 100 per cent of that to the outside wheel to help reduce understeer and improve traction and corner exit, similar to the latest-generation Audi RS 3. Most importantly, it makes the car more capable, which is the German word for fun. I've spent time behind the wheel of some pretty serious metal recently, including the Lamborghini Revuelto and Aston Martin Vanquish, and the Golf R is right up there in terms of capability on the road. You don't know that it's working while driving (it's not something that you can feel), but you know it's working when you point the Golf R into a bend and it glues itself to the tarmac and shoves you out of the bend with serious force. It works with the drive modes to adjust things like the Adaptive Chassis Control (DCC), steering feel, throttle mapping, gear shift logic, exhaust sound, and the torque vectoring and AWD logic. The progressive steering does struggle with feel on centre, but gets better once weighted up. The pedals are tuned well, with a firm brake that never faded on the twisty mountain roads, and the transmission is a 7-speed DSG (wet dual-clutch) that's been retuned and can now comfortably claim the title as 'baby PDK' because of its accuracy and speed. Of course, power from the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged EA888 evo4 engine is always there, and it likes to rev, producing 245kW @ 6,500rpm and 420Nm with a very flat curve. 0-100km/h is dispatched in 4.6 seconds, which isn't blistering by today's standards, but if you find the new GTI a tad lacklustre in this regard, the R will give you the fizz you're looking for. 2025 Volkswagen Golf R | Image: Supplied / Volkswagen Australia How Safe is the Volkswagen Golf R? The Volkswagen Golf R hasn't specifically been tested by ANCAP, but it carries across the 5-Star Safety rating from the Volkswagen Golf, which was originally rated by ANCAP in 2019 and assessed against 2022 rating criteria. All updated Golf MK8 variants built from November 2022 and on sale from February 2023 carry this rating. The platform-shared Audi S3 Sportback is priced from AUD$78,800, the Honda Civic Type R is upwards of $74,100, and the aging Mercedes-AMG A35 4MATIC is priced from $89,700 plus on-roads. It makes the more powerful, quicker Golf R look like good value for money, and when you add in the additional standard kit, with things like Harmon Kardon audio and leather included, the price looks even sharper. Servicing is still exorbitantly priced, and the Civic Type R and GR Corolla are more fun on a track, but the Golf R can keep up everywhere else, and you don't have to explain to your better half why you bought a track car over a sensible daily driver with an attitude problem. It's been a fan favourite since it launched, and this is the best Golf R yet. Need we say much more?

'Maori-white girl': Bikini-clad AFL WAG Rebecca Judd shocks fans as she reveals her little-known New Zealand indigenous ethnicity
Rebecca Judd has shocked fans by revealing her little-known ethnicity. On Monday, the wife of retired AFL legend Chris Judd, 42, took to Instagram Stories to share a video of herself flaunting her signature bikini body at the couple's weekender on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. Judd donned the crocheted bikini from Australian swimwear brand It's Now Cool's new collection while proudly strutting around her outdoor spa. However, it was the mother of four revealing her ethnicity in the caption which really turned fans' heads. "Winter fit check with @itsnowcool. This little Maori-white girl needs a tan. See you soon, Broome," she wrote. Judd seldom mentions her New Zealand heritage from her mother Kerry Brown's side. Her father Hugh Twigly, is of Scottish and Irish descent. In 2023, the AFL WAG told Stellar magazine her family often travelled to New Zealand in her childhood, influenced by her mother's heritage. "Mum's side is MÄori, so we did a lot of trips to New Zealand when we were kids," the model said. "No one ever guesses that I'm MÄori. No-one. Ever." Judd said her family would all flock to her at her grandfather's farm in New Zealand, where they would enjoy a hÄngÄ«, a traditional MÄori cooking method in which food is cooked in an underground oven. "My pop has a big farm, and we'd have all the uncles and aunties over to have a hÄngÄ« every time we went over," she said. Judd's parents Hugh and Kerry relocated from New Zealand to Australia in the late 1970s to take advantage of the West Australian mining boom. After her parents separated, Judd and her sister Kate split their time between Perth and regional WA. In her wide-ranging interview with Stellar, Judd mentioned her family struggled to make ends meet growing up. "We didn't have much growing up, and every dollar counted, so we really respected our food, our home and our belongings," she said. In 2007, Judd moved to Melbourne with then-boyfriend Chris Judd. She completed her studies in speech and language pathology at La Trobe University and worked with adults in rehabilitation at the Alfred Hospital. Judd married Chris in Melbourne's Carousel at Albert Park in 2010, and they have four children: Oscar, 14, Billie, 11, and twin sons Tom and Darcy, nine. The couple documented their extensively redesigned $7.3 million Spanish Colonial house in Brighton, Melbourne's southeast, in the media.

Trainer Chris Waller and jockey James McDonald aiming to end surprising run of outs
So Suave, a brother to champion mare Verry Elleegant, could help Hall of Fame trainer Chris Waller snap one of the longest losing streaks of his celebrated career at Kembla Grange on Tuesday. And superstar jockey James McDonald will be striving to ride his first winner for the Waller stable in a month at Warwick Farm's Wednesday meeting. Waller has had 79 starters since his last winner, Barbray in a Goulburn maiden 11 days ago, and McDonald hasn't ridden a winner for the trainer since scoring on Regulated Affair at Warwick Farm on May 7. Usually, Waller and McDonald give the media plenty of story angles because of the sheer dominance of their trainer-jockey partnership which only makes their recent lack of success more remarkable. Waller's recent run of outs doesn't even stretch two weeks but either So Suave or stablemate Ant can end the trainer's losing streak when they clash in the Kembla Grange maiden over 2000m. Ant, who was narrowly beaten in third place behind Dark Arts at Canterbury last start, is the TAB Fixed Odds favourite at $3.40 with So Suave next in betting at $4.80. So Suave, a three-year-old gelding by Zed out of Opulence, has been unplaced in his three starts to date but is bred to appreciate getting out to a more suitable 2000m. His sister, Verry Elleegant, was a mighty stayer and Waller trained her to win 11 Group 1 races including the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Tancred Stakes and ATC Australian Oaks for more than $14.8 million prizemoney. So Suave is part-owned by Brae Sokolski of Verry Elleegant fame and is the second-last foal out of the dam, Opulence. The broodmare lost her life after giving birth to a sister to Verry Elleegant in 2022. Tragically, Verry Elleegant also died due to complications when giving birth to her first foal in Ireland last year. Then at Warwick Farm on Wednesday, Waller and McDonald team up in all seven races including the superbly-bred two-year-old filly, Ernaux, in the TAB Handicap (1100m). Ernaux is by champion sire I Am Invincible out of Oakleigh Plate winner Booker and sold for $3 million at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale last year.
