'Next cab off the rank': Origin winner tipped to take Des Hasler's job at Titans

Yahoo11-07-2025
Queensland Rugby League chief Ben Ikin says the Maroons are keen to extend Billy Slater's contract after his coaching masterclass helped deliver a famous Origin series victory. In a move designed to help create a Maroons dynasty, it would also ward off interest from NRL clubs potentially looking to poach Slater, whose assistant Josh Hannay has been tipped to succeed under-fire Titans coach, Des Hasler.
Slater was widely hailed for his tactics and bold selection calls as the Maroons bounced back from defeat at home in Game 1 to become the first Queensland side to win the remaining two games on the road and claim the Origin shield. Slater is contracted until the end of next year, which will be his fifth series in charge of the Maroons, but Ikin says the QRL are keen to tie him down 'for as long as we can'.
'It won't be a negotiation that looks similar to what happens in NRL land. I have great trust when we hand him the reins to take this team through a series and that trust has only increased every year he's had the job," Ikin told News Corp. 'It's for him to decide what he wants to do beyond next year and clearly if Billy wants to keep coaching the Queensland State of Origin team then he's probably going to keep the job.'
Ikin's comments come amid reports that Slater's Maroons assistant Josh Hannay has emerged as the frontrunner to succeed under-fire Gold Coast head coach, Hasler. The veteran mentor reportedly has a clause in his contract meaning the Titans can sack him if they fail to finish the season inside the top-eight.
That could happen after this weekend if Gold Coast fail to beat the Broncos on Sunday evening, with another loss meaning the Titans are mathematically out of finals contention. There have been suggestions that Hasler could retire at the end of the season anyway, despite being contracted until the end of 2026.
Either way, Hasler's tenure has been 'an absolute disaster' according to league reporter Michael Caryannis. The former premiership-winning Manly coach was signed to the Titans on a big-money deal to replace Justin Holbrook, and tasked to deliver a harder edge to the Gold Coast and deliver finals footy to the club. But the Titans are rooted to the bottom of the ladder after just four wins in 15 games and Hasler's position is under fire.
"It has been an absolute disaster," Caryannis said about Hasler's reign. "He's on a one million dollar contract and he was supposed to come in and really give this Titans side some clout. And it hasn't worked... the questions that we've had about the Titans for the last 24 months to three years still linger.
"Can they unlock David Fifita and what's their best halves combination? And we still don't have those answers. And if you can't have those answers 18 months into your tenure... you're never going to have them." The Titans will also be without veteran playmaker Kieran Foran next year after he announced on Friday that he was retiring at the end of the season.

And with Hasler's exit seemingly edging closer, Maroons assistant Hannay has emerged as his potential successor. The former Cowboys and Sharks assistant was part of Slater's coaching staff for Queensland's Origin series win and Caryannis says it's understood he is 'the next cab off the rank' as far as the Gold Coast coaching job goes.
"When you look at assistant coaches he's had a bit of experience with the Cowboys and Sharks... He's been in the Queensland Maroons set-up and went very close to getting the Parramatta job last year," Caryannis said about Hannay. "So if he wants the job, he'll be among the next cohort of coaches that don't have proper NRL experience (as a head coach)." Matt King, Ben Hornby and Dean Young have also been mentioned as potential candidates to succeed Hasler.

Hawks 'villains' out to spoil Blues' Docherty farewell

Hawthorn have accepted the role of "villains" as they set out to boost their AFL finals hopes in Carlton hero Sam Docherty's farewell match. Fresh off a win over Port Adelaide, the fifth-placed Hawks (12-6) enter Thursday night's MCG contest as warm favourites intent on locking in a top-eight spot. But the embattled Blues (7-11, 12th) eased pressure on coach Michael Voss with a much-needed win over Melbourne last round and have plenty to play for despite their lowly ladder position. Docherty, who has twice beaten testicular cancer, will play his 184th and final match in a celebrated career that has included three knee reconstructions, a best-and-fairest award and All-Australian selection. Carlton will be desperate to send off Docherty in the right manner and give vice-captain Jacob Weitering something to celebrate in his 200th game. Last time out on the track 🥺#ThankYouDoc — Carlton FC (@CarltonFC) July 23, 2025 "We've been dealt the cards of the villain for this one," Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell said. "The thing about Sam is it's beyond sport. He's got the three knee reconstructions and coming back from that and still being an All-Australian type player. "But then obviously his cancer treatments and coming back from that means it transcends sport. It's such an inspirational person that he's been. "We'll certainly be trying to ruin his party, but after that I certainly think he's one of the players of this season that needs to be celebrated." Hawthorn have beaten Carlton in their last two meetings, but Mitchell is wary, noting the Blues are the highest-scoring team in first quarters this season. "You can see that they're more than capable and they're going to be playing for a bit with Docherty and a 200th game as well," Mitchell said. "They're going to have a fair bit on, so you'd expect them to come out with a lot of energy and vibrancy." Hawthorn sit two games clear of ninth but face a tough run home, with games against finals-bound Adelaide, Collingwood and the Brisbane Lions in the last month of the home-and-away campaign. "Every game is as good as a final," Mitchell said. "We understand where we sit and we need to make sure we're very focused on getting the best outcome we can." The Hawks will be bolstered by the return of young gun Will Day from a foot injury when they play their first game at the MCG since May. Mitch Lewis has recovered well from his comeback match last week and will back up, but teammate Finn Maginness has been ruled out for the rest of the season because of a lacerated kidney. Carlton key forward Harry McKay is able to return for his first game since round 11 after recovering from minor knee surgery.

Inglis and Green lead Australia to victory, spoiling Andre Russell's last game for West Indies

KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Josh Inglis and Cameron Green combined in a record partnership for Australia to ensure 'Dre Day' at Sabina Park didn't end in a victory for West Indies Twenty20 cricket great Andre Russell. After plundering four big sixes and scoring 36 off 15 balls before he skied a top edge that ended his last international innings, Russell had to wait and see if a total of 172-8 would be enough for West Indies to hold off Australia on Tuesday. Not quite. The Australians reached 173-2 and completed an eight-wicket win with almost five overs to spare to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20 series. Inglis was unbeaten on 78 from 33 balls and Green was 56 off 32 balls, the pair sharing a 131-run stand, an Australian T20 record for the third wicket. Green also scored a half-century on Sunday in Australia's three-wicket win to open the series. The back-t-back wins at Sabina Park extended Australia's streak to five in the Caribbean following the 3-0 test series sweep. Russell's last stand His last innings in international cricket was vintage Dre Rus, the kind of shotmaking that helped him win two T20 World Cups and star in domestic T20 leagues around the world. The 37-year-old allrounder went with the total at 98-5 and dominated a 41-run sixth-wicket stand with Rovman Powell. Russell clobbered sixes on three of the first four balls off Ben Dwarshuis in the 15th over, going down the ground over the site screen, top-edging over the wicketkeeper and hitting over the midwicket boundary. He didn't wear a helmet when he went out to bat, so the trademark dyed blond stripe down the middle of his head was visable most of his innings. In one over against Adam Zampa, Russell cut for four and then hoisted the next ball into the second tier of the stadium for six. The onslaught put so much pressure on Zampa that the experienced Australian spinner bowled consecutive wides. Eventually, though, Russell put on a protective helmet. Soon after, he mis-timed a slower ball from Nathan Ellis and his edge went high into the air before it was gloved by Inglis. Both teams had formed a guard of honor for Russell to walk onto the field before the match. The Australian players shook his hand and patted his back as he walked back to the pavilion following his innings. 'The result didn't go my way, but I'm happy and grateful,' Russell said in a post-game TV interview. "I really appreciate the fans who turned out and showed the love. Sorry the result didn't go our way. 'I feel like it's time for me to hang it up and wish the guys the best of luck moving forward.' The Australian bowlers shared the wickets in the first innings, with Zampa taking 3-29, Glenn Maxwell returning 2-15 and Ellis finishing with 2-34. For the West Indies, some sloppy fielding, including at least five dropped catches, hurt their chances of defending the total. The series moves to St. Kitts for the next three games on Friday, Saturday and Monday. ___ AP cricket:

Key Charlie Curnow move 'has not happened' as 'three options' for Harley Reid emerge

Carlton coach Michael Voss has moved to dismiss drama about Charlie Curnow wanting a move away from Melbourne, while there is more speculation surrounding Harley Reid's future. Reports emerged Curnow was looking to get out of the limelight in Melbourne and seek a move to rivals the Gold Coast Suns for lifestyle reasons. The forward has struggled in recent outings having gone four-straight games without a goal. Although he bounced back to his best kicking three in Carlton's win against Melbourne last Saturday night. The dual-Coleman medallist has signed until the end of 2029, but AAP and other outlets have reported Curnow has spoken to the club about a move. Although under-siege coach Voss has moved to quell drama about their star man. Speaking on Wednesday, Voss said Curnow is contracted to the club and will be playing for the Blues at the start of the 2026 season. "Charlie's a Carlton man and he'll stay a Carlton man," Voss said on Wednesday after the question was put to him. "I'm not sure how much more emphatic I need to be on that. Charlie's a very important person to us, and he'll play out his career here. He's a Carlton person and he'll stay one." Speaking on Tuesday, reporter Tom Morris claimed Curnow had spoken to the club about his desire to get out of the Melbourne lights. 'It's different to an official trade request,' Morris told SEN Radio. 'I don't think Charlie would do that unless he believed he could get out. Clearly that looks unlikely if not highly impossible. 'An official trade request is when if Curnow walked into Wright's office and said 'trade me at the end of the season'. That has not happened. 'Conversations with senior officials at the club during which he has said he would like to play for the Suns (have). It's been communicated back to him - 'don't even try'. Carlton have been forced to shut it down to him directly and to his manager. That must be cause for some concern for supporters. At the very least their star is looking for a move and quite keen on it." Curnow is averaging 1.8 goals per game in 2025, which is down from his career average. Curnow has a stellar record for the club having kicked 311 goals in 148 games for Carlton since his debut in 2016. The 28-year-old's rollercoaster form this season has been reflective of the team's performances so far. Voss has come under plenty of pressure with the club set to miss out on finals footy sitting in 12th and 12 points out of the eight. Incoming chief executive Graham Wright is expected to make changes next year. Harley Reid's 'options' heading into 2026 Meanwhile, Harley Reid's future is a talking point with question marks over his next move. Reid has been doing it tough this year in a West Coast side on an eight-game losing streak. Reports suggest a number of Victorian clubs are chasing the signature of the 20-year-old to bring him home. And reporter Morris believes the superstar has 'three options' going forward. 'There are three options,' he told SEN Radio. 'One is he signs (with the Eagles) now. The second is he asks for a trade in a few months. The third is that he lets next year play out and decides what he wants to do at the end of 2026. The third option won't happen. 'His management aren't going to put him through what Oscar Allen is going through; he's already under the microscope. He will make a decision on his future in the next few months. That will either be to request a trade or sign a shot term deal with an option for extension." West Coast coach Andrew McQualter has admitted it's been a tough run of defeats for the club. Although the coach said he doesn't want the side's struggles to dissuade Reid from sticking around. Reid showcased his talent in the first half against Richmond having tallied 20 disposals and six clearances. But the second-half was a struggle having recorded just four possessions in the third quarter after rival Jack Ross tagged him. Reid has come under pressure in the Eagles' midfield this year and McQualter doesn't want Reid to feel downtrodden after the latest defeat. "We are aware that we've got a 20-year-old carrying our midfield," McQualter said. "It's not an easy position for him. As a team we have to find more people and players and ways to not rely on one person."
