66,000 Colombians forced out of homes this year due to fighting between rebel groups

Bogota, May 17 (UNI) Fighting between rebel groups in Colombia has forced more than 66,000 people from their homes in the first five months of this year, UN humanitarians said on Friday.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the new displacements represent a 28% increase over the total number of people rendered homeless by the continuing violence in all of 2024.
"By the end of last year, more than 7.3 million people were internally displaced by violence and conflict, the third largest number in the world, behind Sudan and Syria," OCHA said.
OCHA said the United Nations and its partners deliver aid through a $3.8 million allocation from the UN Central Emergency Fund released in February. The aim is to help more than 56,000 affected people in Catatumbo, where fighting has been fierce in 2025.
According to local media, more than 80 people were killed and 20 injured in a weekend of attacks by National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrillas and clashes with dissidents of the disbanded Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) in the northeast Catatumbo region.
In late March, the Colombian military reported a soldier was killed in an explosive attack by the FARC dissidents in the southwestern department of Cauca. The Ministry of Defense said an escalation of violence in March left more than 80 people injured in the department.
The clashes between the ELN and FARC are seen as turf battles over control of territory.
OCHA said that despite the sharp rise in humanitarian needs, the aid community's ability to respond is severely curtailed by funding shortfalls. Humanitarian partners have been able to respond to just 25% of identified needs, leaving tens of thousands without aid.
A $342-million Colombia Humanitarian Appeal is only 14% funded.

Left parties demand Supreme Court probe into alleged fake encounters of Maoist leaders in Chhattisgarh

Hyderabad, June 7 (UNI) Leaders of various Left parties strongly condemned the alleged custodial killings of Maoist leaders in Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district and demanded that all those currently in police custody be produced before a court without delay. They also called for a judicial inquiry by a sitting Supreme Court judge into the deaths of top Maoist leaders, including Sudhakar and Suresh. In a joint statement released after a meeting held at the CPI State Office, Makhdum Bhavan on Saturday, Left party leaders alleged that top Maoist cadres held in Bijapur police custody are being systematically executed and falsely declared as killed in encounters under Operation Kagar. They warned that 10 to 20 more leaders in custody could face similar fates if urgent intervention is not taken. The Left parties demanded an immediate halt to Operation Kagar and urged the government to initiate peace talks with the Maoist party instead of continuing with what they termed as a "brutal and inhuman campaign." The meeting was chaired by Pashya Padma (CPI) and attended by Abbas (CPI), Vemulapalli Venkatramaiah and K Govardhan (CPI-ML New Democracy), Vanam Sudhakar (YMPI-U), Teja (SUCI-C), and Janaki Ramulu (RSP), among others. Prominent Left leaders like Koonanneni Sambasiva Rao (CPI), John Wesley (CPM), P. Suryam (CPI-ML New Democracy), Potu Ranga Rao (CPI-ML Mass Line), Gadagoni Ravi (MCPI-U), Prasadanna (CPI-ML), Ch. Murahari (SUCI-C), Ramesh Raja (CPI-ML Liberation), and Banda Surender Reddy (Forward Bloc) also participated and endorsed the demands. UNI VV BD

Bangladesh ex-PM Hasina slams CA Yunus for destroying country's economy

Dhaka, June 7 (UNI) Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has slammed Chief Advisor Mohammed Yunus for his speech announcing April 2026 for the national polls, and asserted that he has destroyed the country's economy, caused massive social instability, and is destroying its very history and identity. Rejecting Yunus's claims that the country's economy was in shambles before he came to power in August last year, Hasina said: 'I saw his speech today. Yunus was trying to make excuses for his misdeeds.' 'His remarks do not match the reality. He claimed that the economy was shattered when he came to power. How is it possible? Rather, our economy was in the strongest position,' she added, reports Daily Republic. Highlighting the success of her tenure, and her efforts in uplifting the country's economy, she said 'He has destroyed the economy so much that he could not surpass my last budget worth Tk7,97,000 crore (USD 7.954 billion); rather, he reduced it. The budget does not go downwards. 'When I took office in 2009, Bangladesh's budget was only Tk68,000 crore (USD 5.576 billion), and it rose to Tk7,97,000 crore. In South Asia, Bangladesh's economy became the second, ninth in Asia, and 35th in the world,' the former PM added. She further stated that Bangladesh's GDP was growing by 8% prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, and despite the pandemic, the global crash of stocks, and the further deterioration caused by the Russia-Ukraine war, she was able to keep the economic growth at 6.7%. 'The Awami League increased per capita income to $2,794 from $445 in 2009. In 2023, Bangladesh's GDP rose to 7.4%. Due to extensive pro-people programmes, poverty was reduced to 18% and extreme poverty to 5%.' Recalling the UN General Assembly verdict about Bangladesh's economic status, she said that under her Awami League government, the country was finally recognised as a developing nation, and one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Bashing the CA for disrupting the country's economic growth, she said 'He has destroyed the country's economy', adding that the prices of essentials goods is sky high, and unemployment rate has drastically gone up. 'During the Awami League tenure, a day labourer or rickshaw-puller could earn enough to arrange three meals for the family. Now they cannot earn money for one meal. 'We reduced the poverty rate. He has increased it.' Calling the CA a 'very smart liar', she said that inflation in the country had drastically gone up since Yunus took office, increasing up to 14% as opposed to its earlier rate of 8-9%. Condemning his government's use of mob violence as a tool for political gains, and calling his rule a 'mobocracy', she called him 'Mob King Yunus', rubbishing his claims that all her development projects in the country as PM were named after Sheikh Mujibur Rahman because he was her father. Stating that it was a way of showing respect and acknowledging his contributions, Hasina said 'Yunus claims that I named everything after my relatives, parents, and siblings. It is not true. The Father of the Nation brought us independence. You cannot wipe out the name of Bangabandhu no matter how hard you try. 'History takes its own course. Today, you are trying to wipe out the memory of Bangabandhu and remove his name from everywhere. Where do you stand? The name Bangladesh was given by Bangabandhu.' UNI ANV RN
