‘Disrespectful' friend ruins wedding by breaking this major social norm: ‘So hillbilly'

New York Post14-05-2025

A wedding guest received the surprise of her life when her partner popped the question during her friend's wedding reception in a video that has amassed over 2.5 million views online.
The controversial clip has since ignited a debate about wedding etiquette and whether it's appropriate to propose at someone else's nuptials.
Alyssa Fowler was at her friend's wedding in Jacksonville, Florida, when her boyfriend, Josh Stepherson, unexpectedly dropped to one knee in the middle of the dance floor.
The bride stood directly behind the couple and gasped as she realized what was happening.
Man's 'lazy' wedding act
Ms Fowler quickly turned to her friend and asked if her boyfriend had asked permission to propose at her wedding.
The bride replied, 'No, he didn't, but it's okay! Say yes!'
Ms Fowler accepted the proposal and embraced her new fiance as the bride and groom cheered from the sidelines and then lovingly hugged the pair.

To join in on the TikTok trend – 'a moment that felt like Hozier's yell' – where people share significant life moments set to Noah Kahan's song Northern Attitude (with Hozier), Ms Fowler posted a video of their proposal on TikTok.
However, she didn't expect it to spark such an intense response.
In one reaction video, someone described the move as 'f**ked up' and 'disrespectful'.
Other commenters argued that doing this at someone else's wedding steals attention away from the couple of the night.
Meanwhile, some called the act 'uninspired' and said he was trying to capitalise on the nice styling and atmosphere that someone else had created.
'He didn't plan it, he didn't spend money on it. Just lazy,' said one.
'Nothing wrong'
Others agreed that the move was in bad taste, with one commenter saying, 'Your boyfriend is so uncreative he couldn't find a unique way to do that for you? This feels so hillbilly trailer parkish'.
Many felt sympathy for Ms Fowler, calling her boyfriend's decision an 'ick' and insisting, 'His girlfriend deserved her own special moment'.
Among the criticism, a few commenters defended the move, with one saying, 'Always try having an open opinion, these two must be close friends … Nothing wrong with that'.
'Why does everyone think getting married is about being the center of attention for the day? Marriages are about bringing people together and love,' pointed out one person. 'Love makes the world go round, folks'.
'Both very happy for us'
Ms Fowler told People that her partner didn't ask permission from the newlyweds first because it was a split-second decision.
Mr Stepherson, who has been dating her since 2021, planned to propose the night before but didn't get the chance, so he had the ring in his wallet.
In one reaction video, someone described the move as 'f**ked up' and 'disrespectful'.

When he caught the bouquet during the toss, he decided to take the opportunity to propose.
'We acknowledge that it would have been more appropriate for Josh to have asked beforehand, but it was an in-the-moment decision. They were both very happy for us,' she said.
'All guests that I have spoken to since have said the timing couldn't have been better, and everything played out perfectly,' she added.
While she acknowledged it's not 'typically acceptable,' she urged people to think twice before commenting, especially when they don't know the full story.

Taylor Swift Sneakily Attended a Wedding With Travis Kelce in a Strapless Blue Dress

This week, Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce were guests at a backyard wedding in Tennessee and though all eyes were on the bride and groom, some pictures of the famous couple showed them having a romantic evening of their own. The dress code appeared to be summer casual and Swift fit in perfectly in a strapless blue dress with a small flower pattern, structured bodice, and flowing skirt that ended at her ankles. On her feet, she wore tan high-heeled sandals. The Eras Tour star had her hair half up and wore a bracelet and small pieces of jewelry for accessories. Kelce was wearing dress pants and a short-sleeved button-down shirt in brown. In a TikTok shared by creator @laurenelizabethduhhh, Swift and Kelce can be seen seated side-by-side at a long table, watching the newly wedded couple enjoy their first dance. Swift starts swaying to the music and Kelce joins her in a cute shared moment. Since the end of the NFL season in February, Swift and Kelce have been enjoying some quality time together out of the spotlight. This week, they were seen in Florida together, where Swift wore a classic little black dress to their dinner date. Just before the images of their date night started circulating, a source told Us Weekly that the two were keeping a low profile on purpose right now. 'They are making fewer public appearances together because [their relationship] brings too much unwanted attention, but there isn't trouble in paradise,' the insider explained. A second source shared that Swift has been living in both Miami, where Kelce has been training during his offseason, and New York: 'Taylor has been coming and going to Florida and is still spending a lot of her time in NYC.' And it appears she's making some special time for Tennessee.

Lena Waithe Dropped Over $35,000 for a Special Piece of 'The Mary Tyler Moore' Set: 'I Will Cherish This'

On Wednesday. June 4, Doyle's Auctions held an auction for "The Collection of Mary Tyler Moore" One of the big sales of the auction was a gold-painted "M" that sat on the wall of Mary Richards' apartment in The Mary Tyler Moore Show The Emmy-winner says it's an "honor" to own the special piece after purchasing it for $35, 200Lena Waithe has purchased a special piece of television history. The Emmy Award winner has purchased the gold-painted "M" that adorned Mary Richards' apartment wall on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. The sale took place on Wednesday, June 4, at Doyle's "The Collection of Mary Tyler Moore" auction. The humble prop was the highlight of the auction, receiving a ton of interest due to its prominence in the background of a beloved sitcom, which aired from 1970 to 1977. Original estimates had the piece going for anywhere from $5,000 to 8,000. The piece far exceeded expectations, opening at $14,000 and ultimately selling for a stunning $35,200. In a statement about the sale, Waithe shares, "I will cherish this piece of television history for the rest of my life. I feel honored to have custody of it until it's time to pass it along to someone else." Other Mary Tyler Moore items garnered impressive sales. A colorful portrait of Moore by Peter Max sold for $15,360. Original Al Hirschfeld drawings capturing Moore's roles in The Dick Van Dyke Show ($6,080) and The Mary Tyler Moore Show ($7,680) also exceeded expectations. Moore began leading The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1970, not long after her starring role on The Dick Van Dyke Show. The show was produced by her company, MTM Enterprises, which was behind many successful TV series. Her TV alter ego, Mary Richards, was not that different from the real Moore, the late actress once told PEOPLE in 1974. 'I never went the actors' studio route. I'm not an actress who can create a character. I play me. I'm scared that if I tamper with it I might ruin it,' she shared, noting her single girl character happened, in part, because she didn't want to play married again, and CBS didn't want her character to be divorced. She ended up with eight Emmy nominations and four wins for her work on the series. Read the original article on People

New Photo of Taylor Swift at Intimate Wedding Surfaces on Friday

New Photo of Taylor Swift at Intimate Wedding Surfaces on Friday originally appeared on Athlon Sports. A new photo of Taylor Swift has been circulating on the Internet. This time, at a wedding. The candid photo, originally posted by @paigedoeswhatshewants on TikTok on Friday but was deleted an hour after it was posted, shows Swift having a conversation with two other people wearing a sleeveless baby blue midi dress with pink flowers and a pair of brown wedges. Her wavy hair was worn down and she seemed to be wearing a simple gold bracelet on her wrist. The creator who posted the photo put the 35-year-old singer's song "So High School" in the background, which is the 22nd song from her latest album "The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology." "not taylor swift being at my friends friends cousins wedding..." the creator wrote. Though the "You Need to Calm Down" singer has been trying to keep a relatively low profile since the end of her "Eras Tour" in December 2024 and after her boyfriend, tight end Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs lost the Super Bowl against the Philadelphia Eagles in February, she has been spotted quite frequently these past couple of weeks. On Wednesday evening, the couple was seen enjoying a dinner date at Buccan in Palm Beach, with Swift wearing a black mini dress and a pair of nude wedges. Then on May 23, they were spotted eating together at Harry's Bar and Restaurant, sitting side-by-side in a booth and enjoying their night. Last Friday, the singer revealed that she purchased the rights to her first six albums: her self-titled debut, "Fearless," "Speak Now," "Red," "1989" and "Reputation." This means that the 35-year-old singer owns every single recording, music video, concert film and the art that comes with it. "All of the music I've ever belongs to me," the singer wrote in a letter that's published on her website. "Every single era. My entire life's work." Amid the exciting news of Swift's major announcement, this photo quickly sparked conversation among fans. Though details about the event remain limited, the image alone was enough to set social media story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 7, 2025, where it first appeared.
