Youth Demand supporters detained after disrupting Israeli Eurovision performance
As Yuval Raphael thanked viewers, UK commentator Graham Norton told viewers: "I'm not sure what you're hearing at home, but it was a mixed response [from the crowd]." Confirming the disruption, a spokesperson for Swiss broadcaster SRG SSR which organised the event said: 'At the end of the Israeli performance a man and a woman tried to get over a barrier onto the stage.
"They were stopped. One of the two agitators threw paint and a crew member was hit.' The Swiss broadcaster SRG SSR also added: 'The crew member is fine and nobody was injured. The man and the woman were taken out of the venue and handed over to the police.'
A spokesperson for Basel police shared: 'The organiser handed the two people over to the police. The police checked the two people and then released them. It is now up to the organiser to decide whether to press charges.'
Following the demonstrations, Youth Demand shared videos from David and Meaghan recorded prior to the performance and following their release by Basel police. The first video, shared on Youth Demand's Instagram account shows David being restrained by security during Yuval's performance as he shouts 'Free Palestine'.
Alongside the clips from the demonstration is a message from David, reportedly recorded prior to the event. 'Tomorrow I'm gonna attempt to disrupt the Israeli performance at Eurovision with Youth Demand,' says David.
In the video, David condemns the Israeli state which he says is 'actively armed by our UK government and others across Europe' and the fact they are being presented on a global stage. 'Here we are having a party with them on the biggest stage of them all'.
David shares concerns about the planned disruption at the live venue in his message. 'I'm absolutely terrified to take this action tomorrow' but continues,'I'm left with very little choice other than to escalate my actions.'
The activist group shared a video message from David and Meaghan following their arrest. Meaghan says she's been 'anxious for weeks' in the lead up to the direct action at Eurovision.
David shares as well that before the Yuval's performance, extra security was dispersed which affected their initial plans. Still, they managed to hop the barricade but were then faced with 'pretty grim aggression' from security at the event, Eurovision staff and later on by police. Video from the demonstration shows David's mouth being covered by guards and his hair being pulled.
Youth Demand has called on the UK government to impose a total trade embargo on Israel. It says that it will continue to practice nonviolent resistance until this demand is met.
Prior to Yuval's performance, pro-Palestinian protests took place near a free concert in the centre of Basel against Israel's inclusion in the contest. Protesters clashed with police shortly before Yuval took to the stage.
Yuval finished second to Austrian singer JJ in the competition's final, after winning the public vote. She is one of the survivors of the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel by Hamas gunmen at the Nova music festival, which killed hundreds of people.

It comes after a kickboxing champion takes dead body to police station as he hands himself in for murder. The fall may have been 200 to 300 metres in an area where the slopes are sheer sheets of ice. The alarm was raised only during the night, when Alexandra's boyfriend alerted rescuers after she failed to return and could not be contacted. The pair had spent Tuesday night at the Quintino Sella refuge at Felik, on the Italian side of the Monte Rosa massif, near the Swiss border. They set off at dawn on Wednesday aiming to reach the 4,228-metre summit of Mount Castor. Alexandra, 36, was an experienced climber and had all the necessary equipment. It is believed the pair reached the summit and continued along the ridge to complete the traverse before descending the western slope towards Champoluc. While the route runs along a relatively easy crest, it can become treacherous in bad weather. Local media report that fog and wind may have wiped out visibility, making it difficult to find the descent route among the ice. At first light, the regional mountain rescue service carried out a helicopter flyover but found no trace of the pair. Police later managed to retrieve the last GPS signal sent from Alexandra's watch. Searches were focused on the area, and the bodies were finally located and recovered early in the afternoon. Alexandra was originally from Romania but had lived in Campodarsego, Veneto, for many years. Marco, 34, was from Santa Maria a Monte, Tuscany. His family was in Ireland when the tragedy unfolded and were reported to be making arrangements to return to Italy. Alexandra described herself as a 'passionate Venetian, crazy about sports, aperitifs, and, of course, travelling'. She wrote: 'Discovering new places, meeting different cultures and people, watching sunrises and sunsets, running, and having new experiences around the world fills my heart with joy. 'And how wonderful is it to share all of that with the people by your side? Always smiling and ready for the next adventure. Pro-Palestine protesters chant ‘RAF shame on you' at air base demonstration
Hundreds of demonstrators gathered along the barbed wire fence of RAF High Wycombe on Saturday afternoon at the protest organised by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign. Protesters held banners that said 'end British military collaboration with Israel' and '61,000+ killed, 600 RAF spy flights'. There were chants of 'RAF you work for us, Israel is not your boss', 'RAF shame, shame – killing children in your name' and 'RAF blood on your hands'. A large Palestine flag was erected in front of a replica Second World War Hurricane fighter plane outside the entrance to the air base, with organisers bussing in protesters from High Wycombe railway station. The demonstrators assembled outside the air base held a large red banner as they chanted 'we are the red line, UK for Palestine', with protesters banging pots and drumming throughout the protest. Thames Valley Police said no arrests were made at the protest. Speaking at the demonstration, Adnan Hmidan, chairman of the Palestinian Forum in Britain, said: 'The RAF is not just a bystander, it is a partner in collective punishment. 'It is a partner in ethnic cleansing and the most important thing is it is a partner in the genocide against the people in Gaza. 'Every war plane that reaches Israel with British parts or British support makes this country complicit in the killing of children.' Addressing the crowds, activist Andrew Feinstein said: 'For the last 22 months, there are more RAF spy planes flying over Gaza than there have been Israeli Air Force spy planes. 'That information then gets relayed to the IDF to inform what they call their targeting decisions, but we know that their targeting is totally indiscriminate. 'So, the people who sit in these buildings are the ones guiding the IDF around Gaza. That is active participation in a genocide. 'The people sitting in these buildings should sit for the rest of their lives in The Hague in prison for their participation in genocide.' The Palestine Solidarity Campaign said: 'On 16th August, as part of our summer of action for Gaza, we will be surrounding RAF High Wycombe, drawing on the legacy of protest at air bases like Greenham Common, and showing the strength of the public demand for an arms embargo.' A spokesperson for Thames Valley Police said: 'We are aware of a protest being planned to take place in High Wycombe today. 'We will work with the organisers, partners and the public to facilitate peaceful protest, balancing the rights of all and to keep our communities safe.' RAF High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire houses Headquarters Air Command and was originally designed to house RAF Bomber Command in the late 1930s. The station is also the headquarters of the European Air Group and the UK Space Command. Last weekend in central London, 15,000 people demonstrated peacefully in support of the Palestinian cause with only one arrest, the Metropolitan Police said, adding that 522 were arrested 'for an illegal show of support for Palestine Action on the same day'. The Metropolitan Police said on Friday that a further 60 people will be prosecuted for 'showing support for the proscribed terrorist group Palestine Action'. The force said this follows the arrest of more than 700 people since the group was banned on July 5, including 522 in central London last Saturday. More prosecutions are expected in the coming weeks and arrangements have been put in place 'that will enable us to investigate and prosecute significant numbers each week if necessary', the Met said. Last week, the Met confirmed the first three charges in England and Wales for offences against section 13 of the Terrorism Act relating to Palestine Action. Palestine Action was proscribed by the UK Government in July, with the ban meaning that membership of, or support for, the group is a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison, under the Terrorism Act 2000.
