Spices Board to promote climate-resilient cardamom varieties in Idukki

The Hindu25-04-2025
The Spices Board will promote climate-resilient cardamom varieties in Idukki to mitigate the challenges posed by shifting climatic conditions. According to officials, last year's severe drought significantly impacted cardamom cultivation, underscoring the urgent need for adaptive measures to safeguard the vital agricultural sector.
Sangeetha Viswanathan, chairperson of Spices Board, told The Hindu that the board would promote a new cardamom variety, ICRI-10, developed by the Indian Cardamom Research Institute (ICRI), Myladumpara, Idukki. 'From the coming crop year, the board will promote the new variety to overcome the climate-related issues in the sector. The variety was developed after 10 years of research,' said Ms. Viswanathan.
'We need climate-resilient varieties to successfully continue cardamom farming in the district. We hope the new variety is capable of facing the challenge,' said Ms. Viswanathan.
Yield of 3,000 kg a hectare
Spices Board Director A.B. Rema Shree said the ICRI-10 variant cardamom was climate-resilient and had overcome last year's drought in the area. 'The variety will yield 3,000 kg a hectare yearly. The board plans to distribute the limited number of seeds to the farmers in the next crop year,' said the official.
Crop loss in 16,211 ha
The cardamom-growing hub of Idukki faced severe drought in 2024 due to the absence of summer rain. The Agriculture department reported to the State government that the sector in the district experienced crop loss in across 16,211 hectares of plantations.
Ms. Viswanathan said she would conduct a meeting of cardamom stakeholders in Idukki next week. 'I will interact with cardamom farmers, dealers, the planters' association, and auctioneers. I will ensure more transparency in cardamom auction. The farmers have raised complaints about the Spices Board's fund allocation for the cardamom sector,' she said.
According to officials, the Spices Board chairperson will interact with stakeholders at Rajakad on Sunday (April 27); visit ICAR Myladumpara on Monday (April 28); and Puttady Spices Park on Tuesday (April 29). She will interact with cardamom stakeholders at SNDP Hall in Kattappana on Tuesday evening.

Traders Boost Bets BOE Will Hold Rate at 4% for Rest of 2025

(Bloomberg) -- Money markets are adding to bets the Bank of England will keep interest rates on hold at 4% for the rest of this year as signs of faster inflation and a more resilient economy reduce the case for more easing. On Monday, traders decreased wagers on another quarter-point rate cut this year, with swaps at one stage implying a less than 50% chance of such a move. A reduction was fully-priced earlier this month. The move comes before inflation data due Wednesday is forecast to show the headline rate increased to 3.7% in July. The BOE forecast a peak of 4% in September, double the bank's target. Bets on easing have been pared since an unexpectedly hawkish BOE meeting in August. While officials cut rates by 25 basis points, four Monetary Policy Committee members voted against the move, raising questions over whether the bank would stick to a quarterly pace of cuts for the rest of the year. Since then, stronger data has added to the case for caution. A report last week showed gross domestic product rose 0.3% in the second three months of the year, beating the 0.1% forecast by both private-sector economists and the BOE. That follows a release days earlier showing the jobs market is performing better than analysts had feared. The change in outlook for BOE policy is boosting the pound. Sterling is the best performing G-10 currency against the dollar this month, rising 2.5%. (Updates with additional context.) More stories like this are available on

AP Government announces new bar policy 2025–28; lottery system to replace auctions : Collector Ranjith Basha

Kurnool: The Government of Andhra Pradesh has introduced the New Bar Policy 2025–28, bringing in sweeping reforms in the allotment of bar licenses across the State. Replacing the earlier auction-based system of 2022–25, the government has now adopted a transparent lottery-based mechanism to ensure fairness, accountability, and financial stability in the sector. In Kurnool district, applications are being invited for 23 bar licenses, stated district collector P Ranjith Basha on Monday. According to an official gazette notification issued with the approval of the District Collector, applications will be received at the District Prohibition and Excise Officer's office from August 18 to 26, 2025. The lottery draw will be conducted by the District Collector on August 28, 2025, at the Zilla Parishad conference hall. Successful applicants will be granted licenses by the District Excise Officer following the draw. The new policy introduces several key features: a reduced application fee of Rs 5 lakh plus a processing fee of Rs.10,000, simplified entry rules that no longer mandate a pre-existing restaurant, and provision for setting up the restaurant within 15 days of license allotment. License fees have also been rationalized—Rs.35 lakh in areas with population up to 50,000, Rs 55 lakh in areas between 50,000 and 5 lakh, and Rs 75 lakh in cities above 5 lakh population. License fee payments can be made in six equal instalments with a single instalment bank guarantee, while business hours have been extended from 10 a.m. to midnight (14 hours). Officials said the new bar policy is designed to promote transparency by eliminating scope for irregularities, ease financial burden on entrepreneurs, and ensure a level playing field with A4 retail liquor shops as both will procure stock from APSBCL. With lower fees, flexible payment terms, and extended operating hours, the policy is expected to strengthen business viability and consumer convenience while creating equal opportunities for entrepreneurs in both urban and semi-urban areas. Sudheer Babu, District Prohibition & Excise Officer, joint Collector Dr B Navya, DRO and others participated.

Coimbatore district administration explores recycling of MLP waste in peri-urban village panchayats

The district administration has begun preliminary efforts to explore the use of products made from multi-layered plastic (MLP) waste in civic and government projects. District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar told The Hindu that a team under the District Rural Development Agency (DRDA), led by Additional Collector (Development) Sanket Balwant Waghe, has been tasked with studying project feasibility. The administration has also partnered with Recompose Recycling to streamline waste management. C. Prashanth of Recompose Recycling said MLP forms only a part of total waste, but pilot applications have been demonstrated, including a bus shelter at Kittampalayam panchayat, a control room for Kaniyur panchayat, and 200 shields for the Independence Day awards, manufactured using 250 kg of plastic waste. 'The shields were made to reflect government involvement and raise awareness,' he said. Highlighting challenges in peri-urban panchayats, the Collector said, 'Nearly 20 panchayats in the district each have populations exceeding 15,000, and the facilities available are insufficient. The objective is to create both supply and demand for recycled products. Only when such products find consistent use can the collection and recycling process become sustainable.' Official sources said three resource recovery parks are planned at Pollachi North, Kaniyur, and a combined facility for Somayampalayam and Pannimadai. These will be equipped for segregation and processing of dry, wet, garden, and sanitary waste, including baling machines, shredders, dewatering units, and an incinerator. Preliminary works have begun, and detailed project reports are being prepared for government approval.
