Why 2025 is a season of intrigue for Florida football quarterback DJ Lagway
Suffice it to say, Lagway's heroics ostensibly saved Billy Napier his job. However, while the pressure has lessened a tad on the head coach's hot seat, the Orange and Blue have high expectations this year while facing what is arguably the toughest schedule among FBS teams.
Napier has put his full trust in his sophomore gunslinger despite some injury concerns during the preseason.
"This guy's got a lot of ceiling," Florida's skipper offers. "There's a lot there, fundamentally and overall football knowledge. The impressive thing about him is the mental makeup, the humility. He just shifts into this competitor. He goes to a different space as a competitor. It's not too big for him."
With that said, ESPN college football reporter Chris Low recently took on the task of evaluating the intriguing aspects of all the Southeastern Conference's 16 starting quarterbacks, offering up the following for Lagway.
The intrigue behind DJ Lagway
"As a freshman this past season, Lagway had moments when he was everything everybody thought he would be when he came out of Willis, Texas, as a five-star recruit. He's got a great arm, ideal size (6-3, 247 pounds) and the awareness and escapability in the pocket to extend plays," Low begins.
"Lagway wasn't the Gators' full-time starter until the last part of the season, after Graham Mertz tore his left ACL in the third quarter of a 23-17 overtime loss to Tennessee. It was in that game that Lagway showed his vast potential in a very hostile road environment. His 27-yard touchdown pass on third-and-19 to Chimere Dike with 29 seconds remaining tied the game before the Vols won in overtime," he continues.
"Lagway had 12 completions of 40 yards or longer this past season and was 6-1 as a starter, helping lead the Gators to four straight wins to close the season."
DJ Lagway's path to success
"The lingering question with Lagway is his durability and whether he can stay healthy. He battled an injury to his throwing shoulder in the spring and was limited. Most recently, a strained left calf held him back. He didn't participate in the Gators' first scrimmage, but according to insiders, has continued to throw regularly and looked good," Low offers.
"He also missed a game and a half this past season with a hamstring injury. Lagway also put the ball in some dangerous spots at times, but what freshman doesn't? The bottom line is if he stays healthy, he has greatness written all over him."

Florida QB DJ Lagway takes another step toward returning from a strained left calf
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida quarterback DJ Lagway took team repetitions Monday for the first time since training camp began, a promising sign for the 15th-ranked Gators as they start ramping up for their season opener. Although still wearing a noncontact jersey, Lagway stepped on the field for 11-on-11 drills for the first time since straining his left calf while running with teammates in July. The sophomore had been 'modified' in practice for three weeks, limited to throwing mostly on the side and in individual drills. It was the latest injury for the Heisman Trophy hopeful who missed spring practice with a shoulder injury after undergoing sports hernia surgery. 'He's feeling much better, and he's moving around well,' Napier said following practice Monday. Florida's star player also was limited last fall with shoulder soreness and slowed in November because of a strained left hamstring. The Gators, who won their final four games last season, open the season Aug. 30 against Long Island University. Lagway completed 60% of his passes for 1,915 yards, with 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 2024. He took over the starting role after Graham Mertz tore a knee ligament at Tennessee in October. The Gators have little experience behind Lagway, with former Yale transfer Aidan Warner, freshman Tramell Jones Jr. and college journeyman Harrison Bailey competing for the backup role. 'It's still very much a battle," Napier said. "I wish I had more clarity, but I don't. So we'll continue to work with that group this week, and the closer we'll get (to the opener), the more clarity we'll have. So still nothing clear cut.' ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Sign up here. AP college football: and Mark Long, The Associated Press

Caleb Wilson inks new endorsement deal
Caleb Wilson has his first big endorsement deal The North Carolina Tar Heels' basketball roster will look a lot different here in the 2025-26 season as Hubert Davis had to overhaul the roster thanks to players entering the transfer portal, running out of eligibility or turning pro. To reload, the Tar Heels brought in a really good transfer portal class as well as a top 10 recruiting class for the 2025 cycle. One of the top new additions is five-star forward Caleb Wilson, who finished ranked in the top 10 among all 2025 recruits. On Monday, Wilson announced some important news as he agreed to an endorsement deal with athletic brand New Balance. The terms of the deal are not out yet, but ESPN reporter Shams Charania reported that it is a multiyear, multimillion-dollar shoe deal. The projected 2026 NBA lottery pick is the latest basketball player to sign with New Balance as they have made an array of signings recently. That included No. 1 overall pick and former Duke standout Cooper Flagg. Wilson joins New Balance along with the likes of Flagg, Kawhi Leonard, Jamal Murray, Tyrese Maxey, Cameron Brink, Dejounte Murray and Zach LaVine among others. Wilson won't be able to wear New Balance shoes on the court while at North Carolina as the program is sponsored by Nike/Jordan Brand. Texas A&M is a finalist to land rising 2026 4-star SG out of St. Louis (MO)
Entering his first season at the helm, new Texas A&M basketball coach Bucky McMillan has already assembled his 2025 roster, made up of 13 transfer additions, freshman guard Jeremiah Green, and international Spanish shooting guard Ruben Dominguez. On the recruiting trail, McMillan has strategically spread out his offers, which include rising 2026 four-star SG Quentin Coleman, who recently placed Texas A&M in his top 4 program list. Sitting at the top of Coleman's list, McMillan and his staff have been with the St. Louis (MO) native since the very beginning, watching his rise in the rankings and developing a strong and consistent communication channel that could pay off with a commitment down the stretch. Right now, landing three or four commitments in the 2026 cycle is the goal, especially before his first season with the program. Standing at 6'3" and 170 pounds, Coleman is one of the top shooters in the country. Like many of the prospects McMillan has offered, Coleman shot over 45% from the field during his 2024 junior season, averaging 19.4 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2.7 steals per game. This summer, Coleman's scoring averaged slightly decreased to 14.1 points per game during Nike's Peach Jam Tournament, but also led to his rise with nearly every blue-blood representative in attendance. According to Rivals, Coleman is currently positioned as the 61st-ranked shooting guard and the 8th-ranked prospect in Missouri. Coleman will choose between Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Iowa, Wake Forest, Illinois, and St. Louis.
