PUTRAJAYA, July 28 (Bernama) -- Leaders from Thailand and Cambodia are expected to meet here at 3 pm today for a high-level negotiation aimed at halting deadly border clashes that have erupted between the two Southeast Asian neighbours. The conflict, which flared up on July 25 near Cambodia's northern border, has already claimed more than 20 lives on the Thai side. Cambodian authorities have reported five soldiers and eight civilians killed, with thousands of residents displaced across both sides. Tensions have been brewing since a fatal skirmish on May 28 near the disputed Preah Vihear border zone, where a Cambodian soldier was reportedly shot. The 817-kilometre undemarcated stretch between the two countries has long been a flashpoint for military and diplomatic disputes. On Sunday, the Thai government confirmed its participation in the regional consultation hosted by Malaysia, expressing hope that the talks would pave the way for informed decisions and help restore calm. Thai Government spokesperson Jirayu Huangsap said the meeting would serve to consider peace proposals submitted by both sides. In an event here yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that he is expected to chair the meeting, having held separate discussions with Thai and Cambodian leaders over the past week. He said global leaders, including US President Donald Trump and representatives from China, have urged both parties to seek a peaceful resolution.

MADANI framework upholds moral values and national unity, says PM Anwar
PUTRAJAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring Malaysia's development under the MADANI framework remains anchored in strong moral values and national unity. Speaking at the Majlis Ilmu MADANI event with Islamic scholars at Kompleks Seri Perdana, he stressed that while Malaysia embraces modern progress, Islamic principles must guide its future. 'We need to progress. We need to ensure that there is peace and political stability, to craft an economic move forward at a faster pace, an accelerated pace. But at the same time, we are mindful of the fact that as Muslims, the issue of values is very pertinent,' Anwar said. The event was attended by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek. International figures, including British musician Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens) and Islamic scholar Dr Shaykha Haifaa Younis, were also present. Addressing the ongoing crisis in Gaza, Anwar urged the global community not to overlook the suffering of Palestinians. Dr Haifaa, who shared her experiences in Gaza, described how the resilience of its people deepened her spirituality. 'They taught me patience. They taught me how to trust Allah, even when the world around you is falling apart,' she said. Quran scholar Syeikh Dr Ahmad Aissa Hassan El-Ma'sarawi praised Anwar's monthly knowledge gatherings, likening them to the practices of early Islamic leaders. Hun Manet Heads To Putrajaya for Ceasefire Talks With Thailand
By Vijian Paramasivam PHNOM PENH, July 28 (Bernama) -- Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet will lead a delegation to Malaysia on Monday for mediation talks facilitated by Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Hun Manet confirmed his participation in a posting on his Facebook page late on Sunday. bootstrap slideshow 'I will lead a Cambodian delegation to attend a special meeting in Kuala Lumpur hosted by Malaysia. I'd like to thank Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim for his initiative and coordination to organise and host this special meeting,' said Hun Manet. Manet is expected to hold high-level talks with acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai to de-escalate the growing armed confrontation between the two countries. The meeting is scheduled to take place in Putrajaya on Monday at 3 pm. Anwar, who is also chair of ASEAN, last week proposed brokering a peace deal with the two warring parties after a border conflict erupted. Tensions have been simmering since a May 28 skirmish between Cambodian and Thai forces in the Preah Vihear area, in the northern part of the kingdom. For decades, the two ASEAN member states have been involved in a protracted and bitter dispute over an 817-km non-demarcated border that spiralled into a bloody conflict in northern Cambodia last week.
