Alessia Russo Voted Women's Player Of The Year By Football Writers

Alessia Russo has been voted the Women's Footballer of Year by her country's journalists representing the Football Writers' Association (FWA) of England.
Russo is enjoying the best season of her career, helping her side reach the final of the UEFA Women's Champions League with her goal away to eight-time Champions Olympique Lyonnais last month. She is the second Arsenal player to receive the prestigious award after another forward, Vivianne Miedema in 2019.
The Arsenal striker finished ahead of last year's winner, Khadija Shaw of Manchester City. The forwards are currently tied as the two leading goalscorers in the Women's Super League this season with twelve goals each going into the last round of games tomorrow.
In third place was Mariona Caldentey, also of Arsenal, and in fourth was the Chelsea captain Millie Bright. In total, 39 different players received votes from the members of the FWA.
The FWA Men's Footballer of the Year award was first handed out in 1948 to Stanley Matthews. A women's award was created 70 years later in 2018 with Chelsea's Fran Kirby the first recipient.

Kirby won for a second time in 2021 but, like the men's award, it has been recently been monopolised by the foreign stars in the English league with Australia's Sam Kerr winning for the next two years before the Jamaican Shaw.
Russo is therefore the first English winner of the men's or women's award in four years since Kirby. She has enjoyed the best goalscoring season of her career, finding the net 20 times in all competitions in 39 games.
She joined Arsenal on a free transfer at the end of her contract with Manchester United in 2023 saying 'I want to win trophies - as does everyone in this club. I can't wait to get stuck in and grow as a player - it's a new challenge and a new environment.' At 26 years of age, many will feel her best years are ahead of her.
Russo has scored seven goals in the Women's Champions League this season making her the joint-second top scorer in the competition this season alongside team-mate Mariona Caldentey and behind only Clàudia Pina of Barcelona.
That total is the highest by any English player in the 24-year history of the tournament. The record was previously shared by Kirby (2020/21) and former Arsenal forward Danielle Carter (2013/14) who both scored six times in one season.
The Chair of the FWA, John Cross said 'Alessia's performances, especially in the Champions League have been the stand-out from the season. She seems to have taken a huge leap since joining Arsenal and her overall game as well as her goals make her a special player."
"We're delighted to be crowning her Women's Footballer of the Year but hope that it's not the last honour she receives this season with the Champions League Final at the end of the month.'
Elsewhere, Mo Salah of Liverpool was voted the men's Footballer of the Year by the FWA, winning the award for a record-equalling third time, with 90% of the vote, the biggest margin this century. Both players will be presented with their awards at the Footballer of the Year dinner on Thursday May 22 at the Landmark London.

Leroy Sané bids Bayern fans goodbye ahead of a likely move to Galatasaray

Associated Press ISTANBUL (AP) — Germany winger Leroy Sane posted an emotional farewell message to Bayern Munich fans on Thursday as he nears a move to Galatasaray on a free transfer. The Turkish league champion confirmed on social media late Wednesday that Sané arrived in Istanbul for negotiations. 'After 5 intense years here in Munich, I've decided to start a new chapter in the upcoming season," Sané wrote on Instagram. "I'm incredibly proud to have worn the jersey of the best and biggest club in Germany for over 200 matches and will always cherish the titles we've won together.' Sané's contract with Bayern expires at the end of the month, though he has been included in Bayern's squad for the Club World Cup in the U.S. Talks on a possible extension dragged on through the season without a resolution, even as Bayern reached agreements on new contracts with teammates like Jamal Musiala and Joshua Kimmich. A five-year stay will end at Bayern, which signed Sané in 2020 for a reported fee of just under 50 million euros (then $56.3 million) after a lengthy pursuit of the then-Manchester City player. During his time in Munich, he's won the Bundesliga four times, but has faced criticism in recent seasons for a perceived lack of consistency, especially in European games. Sané scored 13 times in 45 games across all competitions for Bayern this season but only one of those goals came in the Champions League. ___ AP soccer: recommended in this topic

Tearful Trent Alexander-Arnold applauded by Liverpool fans after final appearance at Anfield

Trent Alexander-Arnold enjoyed a brilliant send-off at Anfield as Liverpool lifted the Premier League trophy in his final appearance for the club, with the right-back warmly applauded by the crowd on an emotional afternoon. He has confirmed that he will depart his boyhood club this summer on a free transfer after helping Arne Slot's side to Premier League triumph, with the England international widely expected to join Real Madrid. Advertisement Alexander-Arnold replaced Conor Bradley at half-time on his last game for the club and was visibly emotional at the full-time whistle, hugging his teammates and manager as they celebrated a second league title of his spell at Anfield. FOLLOW LIVE: Liverpool lift Premier League title as party starts following emotional Anfield ceremony "I didn't know what to expect, stepping out at Anfield, after what had happened a few weeks ago,' admitted Alexander-Arnold. 'I wanted to play for the club one more time, he trusted me to go out there, the reception means more than anything for me. 'I've played hundreds of games, but I never felt more loved and cared for than today. I hope one day, the fans and supporters will be able to recognise the hard work I've done for the team, there wasn't a day I didn't think of the team. It's all I've ever known, it's… Alexander-Arnold has been strongly criticised by sections of the Liverpool support despite making more than 350 appearances for the club and making clear his desire to seek a new challenge. Home fans voiced their displeasure when he was introduced against Arsenal two weeks ago but the reception was considerably warmer as he was brought off the bench by Slot at half-time on the final day against Crystal Palace, and he was applauded loudly as he came out to collect his winner's medal and lift the trophy after the game. The 26-year-old has won two domestic titles and the Champions League during his time at Anfield, establishing himself as a key figure under Jurgen Klopp. The German manager expressed his frustration last week at the decision by fans to boo Alexander-Arnold. (Getty Images) "I don't want to tell you what you have to think. I can tell you what you think is wrong," Klopp said. "I don't tell you you should not be angry, you should not be disappointed, I tell you don't forget. This club doesn't forget. Advertisement "I watched the game when he came on and I heard the booing. I switched the telly [television] off. Honestly, I could not have been more disappointed at this moment." Bradley, who has broken into the first team over the last two seasons, appears set to vie with Jeremie Frimpong to take Alexander-Arnold's place on the right of the back four next season. Frimpong has undergone a medical at Liverpool as he nears a switch from Bayer Leverkusen for a fee just short of £30m.

Spurs set to name Brentford boss Frank as new head coach: reports

Tottenham are expected to announce Brentford boss Thomas Frank as their new manager (JUSTIN TALLIS) Tottenham have reached an agreement with Premier League rivals Brentford to make Thomas Frank their head coach following the sacking of Ange Postecoglou, it was widely reported on Thursday. Spurs set their sights on Frank after dismissing Postecoglou last week, just 16 days after he won the Europa League, and made an official approach to Brentford earlier this week. Advertisement Britain's Press Association said discussions initially centred on Frank's current terms at Brentford and further talks were required over which backroom staff he would take with him. Frank's contract with Brentford was set to run until 2027. It is understood he has a release clause of about £10 million ($13.6 million). PA said a deal was struck on Thursday and the Athletic reported Spurs were set to seal the appointment of the 51-year-old Dane. Frank lead Brentford back to the top flight in 2021 after an absence of 74 years and has established the west London club in the Premier League. Advertisement Spurs will play in the Champions League next season thanks to their Europa League success in Bilbao, where they beat Manchester United 1-0. However, Postecoglou paid the price for a miserable Premier League season as Tottenham finished 17th after losing 22 of their 38 games. Frank began his coaching career in the youth set-up of the Danish national team before a three-year stint at Brondby. He initially joined Brentford as an assistant coach before stepping to replace Dean Smith, when he left to join Aston Villa. After losing out in the 2020 Championship play-off final, Brentford bounced back to win promotion through the play-offs a year later. Since then, the Bees have finished 13th, ninth, 16th and 10th despite consistently selling some of their best players. jw/iwd
