British Paralympian, 35, vanishes while on holiday in Las Vegas and has been missing for more than a week - as his family issues a desperate plea

Daily Mail28-04-2025

A British Paralympian has vanished on holiday in Las Vegas and has been missing for more than a week - and his family have now issued a desperate plea for help.
Sam Ruddock, 35, who has represented Britain in shot put, cycling and sprinting, had gone alone to the American city to watch the annual WWE WrestleMania event.
But the athlete from Rugby, Warwickshire, who represented Team GB at the London 2012 Paralympics and Rio 2016, has not been heard from since April 16 - nearly two weeks ago. This is also the date of his last Instagram post - which sees him apparently hitchhiking.
Las Vegas police are now treating him as a missing person and officers in the UK, US and even with Interpol are all aware of his disappearance.
Mr Ruddock, who has cerebral palsy, is a dad to a two-year-old son and has a baby on the way - and his family are desperate for help to bring him home to them.
His mother Fran Ruddock, of Lincoln, said he normally speaks to her everyday and is 'very sociable', as reported by the Mirror.
She pleaded for anyone in the UK or US with information to get in touch: 'Anything at all to piece together the gaps.'
His friend Lucy Hatton drove him to the airport on April 13 and knew he was staying in a hostel - but it is believed he did not make it to the wrestling event he went to see, which was set to take place on April 19 and 20.
He was 'very active on social media', she said - so when all contact and online activity suddenly stopped, it raised alarm bells, as it was 'really, really out of character'.
But she did add he has not 'been in quite the right headspace' recently.
Interpol has said it has no record of Mr Ruddock taking a flight back to the UK.
Staff at the hostel he was staying at have said he did not check out and his belongings are still in his room.
His latest Instagram post, shared on April 16, is a long video of him riding in an Austin-Healey sports car with an American man he seems to have just met.
The man asks him, 'How long have you been in the States?', to which Mr Ruddock replies, 'Three days'.
He also asks why he came to Vegas - and the athlete explains it was for the wrestling event.
The American man then mysteriously says, 'Oh, so you might stay?', to which Mr Ruddock replies, 'Yeah', before getting distracted by showing his shirt to the camera.

Ms Hatton was deeply concerned for her friend (pictured), a 'fantastic human being' who loved going into schools to inspire the next generation of athletes
It seems as if Mr Ruddock has hitchhiked with the man, as they discuss where he is going to drop him off - at the Pawn Shop, where American reality TV show Pawn Stars is filmed, about the day-to-day running of the shop.
The athlete says he wanted to go to 'Fremont' originally - presumably Fremont Street, the city's second most-famous street after the Strip.
But the American man says he cannot take him all the way so drops him off at the Pawn Shop instead - and tells the sportsman about various friends of his in the city he should get to know.
Mr Ruddock mentions having left some of his stuff behind in his hostel room, which he was sharing with minor-league baseball players: 'They're chill.'

A British Cycling spokesperson said it was understood Mr Ruddock had been reported missing both to British and American police.
They added: 'We urge anyone who has been in contact with Sam since April 16 or may have any information of his whereabouts to contact their local police department as soon as possible.'
A Lincolnshire Police spokesperson said there was an active missing persons investigation.

Mr Ruddock made his international debut at London 2012 (pictured), running in the 100m and 200m T35 heats, the Paralympic track division for those with coordination impairments

He then switched events to shot put ahead of Rio 2016, finishing sixth in the F35 category - after taking silver at the European Championships the same year.
The athlete then turned his attention to cycling in 2018 and was selected for the British team at the Para Cycling Track World Championships in 2019.

Madeleine McCann: Search teams scour scrubland and abandoned buildings

Investigators are continuing to scour scrubland and abandoned buildings in the second day of the latest searches for missing Madeleine McCann. Teams of German and Portuguese police officers, as well as firefighters, face the daunting task of hunting for evidence 18 years on from the disappearance of the British three-year-old in 2007. Advertisement This week's operation is focusing on a sparsely developed area of land around 3.5 miles from Praia da Luz, where Madeleine was last seen while on holiday with her parents and siblings. She vanished after she was left sleeping in a room with her toddler twin brother and sister while her parents went for dinner with friends in a nearby restaurant. Kate and Gerry McCann are not commenting during the 'active police investigation', staff at the Find Madeleine Campaign said. Scrubland was cleared next to a derelict and abandoned property as part of the search operation. Advertisement The area where they are working is an area of fields and scrubland between a main road and the sea, with a few buildings including a vineyard. Search teams use a digger during the painstaking operation. Photo: James Manning/PA It has been variously reported that teams will look where trenches were dug near the resort at the time of Madeleine's disappearance, at wells, ruins and water tanks, and that there are plans to examine 21 pieces of land. The search is being carried out at the request of the German federal police, as they look for evidence that could implicate prime suspect Christian Brueckner, who is in prison for raping a 72-year-old woman in Praia da Luz in 2005. He is due to be released from jail in September if no further charges are brought. Advertisement Tents have been put up for the officers to use during the search activity. Photo: James Manning/PA In October last year, Brueckner was cleared by a German court of unrelated sexual offences, alleged to have taken place in Portugal between 2000 and 2017. About 30 German police, including forensic experts, are expected to take part in the search alongside Portuguese officers. The operation is expected to last until Friday. The Metropolitan Police said they were aware of the operation but that British officers will not be present. German investigators and Portuguese officers last carried out searches in 2023, near the Barragem do Arade reservoir, about 30 miles from Praia da Luz. Advertisement Brueckner, who spent time in the area between 2000 and 2017, had photographs and videos of himself near the reservoir. It was previously searched in 2008, when Portuguese lawyer Marcos Aragao Correia paid for specialist divers to search it, after he claimed to have been tipped off by criminal contacts that Madeleine's body was there. British police were later given permission to examine scrubland near where she vanished in 2014.

Foreign Office met with pro-Israel lobbyist to discuss arms sales

The meeting between British multi-millionaire Trevor Chinn and Christian Turner, the political director at the Foreign Office, took place in October last year. Chinn made his money in the motor industry and has donated to Keir Starmer and David Lammy. The purpose of the meeting, first reported by Declassified UK, was initially described by the Foreign Office as being 'to discuss geopolitics with businessman'. But disclosures to the investigative outlet under Freedom of Information laws showed that Chinn was given the chance to discuss Britain's arms trade with Israel with the Government. READ MORE: Labour MPs visit Israel on lobbying trip in middle of Gaza genocide Emails showed that the conversation focused on 'the 2 September IHL decision', referring to Labour's decision on that date to suspend some arms sales. A significant carve out was given in the form of an exemption for parts of F-35 bomber planes, which have been instrumental in Israel's devastation of Palestine. Chinn offered 'recommendations' on the issue of weapon sales, while the Foreign Office official asked whether other British diplomats might also try 'reaching out' to him and 'hearing' his views. A Foreign Office spokesperson said: 'It is the political director's job to engage with a range of voices across multiple issues to ensure informed policy making'. Declassified UK said that the Foreign Office refused to release any more details on the meeting, claiming it would harm 'the effective conduct of our bilateral relationship with Israel' which 'depends upon maintaining trust and confidence between governments'. The National has contacted the Foreign Office for further comment. READ MORE: Keir Starmer confronted over UK claim 'no genocide in Gaza' Chinn failed to respond to comment when approached by Declassified. He is a long-running funder of both Labour Friends of Israel and Conservative Friends of Israel and has also been involved with the Britain-Israel Communications and Research Centre, a leading lobbying group. In declassified files from the early 1990s, Chinn was described by one Foreign Office official as being 'by no means a dove' in terms of his support for Israel. 'My own feeling is that he is not very subtly tuned into the Israeli political scene, although he meets a number of leaders through his fund-raising activities', the diplomat continued.
