However, the "natural" label does not automatically equate to safety or efficacy and assuming that it does can lead to unintended consequences.
For instance, in Malaysia, traditional herbal medicine remains a common practice, where various communities rely on local herbs for their perceived health benefits. While herbal remedies can offer genuine benefits, they are not without risk.
Some natural ingredients may interact unpredictably with medications or cause adverse effects when consumed incorrectly.
According to a Health Ministry survey, 31.6 per cent of Malaysians were not aware of the possible interactions between traditional and modern medicines.
Herbalife director, research development and scientific affairs Asia Pacific, Dr Alex Teo, says licorice root, for example, is often used in traditional remedies and is known for its soothing properties.
However, excessive consumption, especially in concentrated supplement form, can lead to elevated blood pressure and imbalances in electrolytes. This underscores the importance of using even well-known natural ingredients with care and informed guidance.
To make well-informed supplementation decisions, consumers must have a good understanding of what the word "natural" represents and what it does not.
Dr Teo says one common misconception is that natural supplements are inherently safe because they aren't pharmaceutical drugs.
"In reality, toxins like arsenic and lead can be found in some plants and consuming them without proper knowledge of dosage can have serious health consequences on the kidney and liver."
Some people also mistakenly believe that if something is "natural", it can be taken in unlimited quantities without risk. However, even natural compounds can cause adverse reactions if overconsumed.
For instance, fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K can build up in the body and cause toxicity when taken for a prolonged period.
Another misconception is that supplements can be taken freely alongside prescription medications.
Some supplements, like concentrated green tea extract, can interfere with medications for heart conditions, while garlic supplements might interact with blood-thinning medications, reducing their effectiveness or causing harmful side effects, explains Dr Teo.
Hence, it is always important to consult a medical practitioner before starting supplementation alongside regular medication.
Most importantly, no supplement can replace a balanced, nutritious diet, stresses Dr Teo.
"Whole foods provide a complex combination of nutrients, fibre, and other compounds that supplements cannot replicate."
Consulting a healthcare practitioner is vital to ensure the right choices are made based on an individual's health profile and medication regimen, and to avoid any unintended negative consequences as a result of supplement ingredients interacting with ongoing medication.

Hepatitis C treatment can be safely shortened
A new clinical trial conducted in Malaysia has found that an eight-week regimen of ravidasvir and sofosbuvir is just as safe and effective as the standard 12-week treatment for chronic hepatitis C. This finding could accelerate efforts to scale up access to treatment in resource-limited settings by reducing treatment duration, costs and system burden. The EASE study (Evaluating Accelerated Shortened treatment for hepatitis C in Asia through real-world Evidence) was led by the Health Ministry (MOH) and conducted across 26 sites nationwide between March 2021 and March 2023. The randomised trial involved 322 patients diagnosed with chronic hepatitis C virus infection, including those with more complex medical profiles. The primary objective was to determine whether an eight-week treatment course using the fixed-dose combination of ravidasvir and sofosbuvir would achieve similar sustained virological response (SVR), compared to the standard 12-week regimen. An SVR refers to the continued absence of the hepatitis C virus in a patient's blood 12 weeks or more after they have completed treatment. It is essentially considered a virological cure for the infection. The study found no significant difference in efficacy between the two durations, with high SVR rates maintained in both arms. Safety profiles were also comparable, with no new adverse effects identified. The results were officially reported by the MOH in January (2025) and presented at the 2025 European Association for the Study of the Liver (EASL) Congress in early May in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Ravidasvir was co-developed through a public-health partnership involving the MOH, Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi), Pharco Pharmaceuticals (Egypt) and Pharmaniaga Berhad (Malaysia), with key clinical trials conducted in Malaysia and Thailand. The treatment was first registered in Malaysia in 2021 and added to the World Health Organization (WHO) Essential Medicines List in 2023. While hepatitis C continues to affect approximately 50 million people globally, with only about 20% receiving treatment, high drug prices remain a barrier in many countries. A 2023 MOH study estimates 0.4% of the population in Malaysia to have hepatitis C. In line with WHO targets, Malaysia aims to eliminate the disease as a public health threat by 2030.

Melaka strengthens healthcare with RM150k for health programmes
MELAKA: The Melaka government is committed to maintaining a responsive and comprehensive healthcare ecosystem, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh. He said the commitment includes safeguarding the welfare of all frontliners who form the backbone of public well-being. 'As part of ongoing support for improving healthcare services, the state government has allocated RM150,000 specifically for the implementation of health programmes at the state level. 'This initiative also supports the Agenda Nasional Malaysia Sihat (ANMS) for the benefit of the people in the state,' he said at the appreciation and recognition ceremony for Melaka health workers here last night. Also present were state Health, Human Resource and Unity Committee chairman Datuk Ngwe Hee Sem and Health Ministry secretary-general Datuk Seri Suriani Ahmad. Ab Rauf said that as a proactive measure to strengthen the grassroots healthcare network, Melaka has produced a total of 1,369 community paramedic (Parakom) volunteers in collaboration with the Melaka Health Department and St John Ambulance. He added that in efforts to strengthen the state's healthcare ecosystem, the federal government continues to be attentive to the needs and challenges faced by the sector in Melaka. 'For example, the federal government has approved an allocation of RM45.49 million to upgrade healthcare facilities involving 34 health clinics, seven dental clinics, three rural clinics and three hospitals. 'In addition, Melaka will soon have a military hospital worth RM325 million, which is expected to be completed in January 2029 and will have a significant impact on the state's healthcare sector,' he said. Redirect taxes for a healthier future
WHEN the government announced the expansion of the Sales and Service Tax (SST) starting July 1, many Malaysians focused on the rising cost of goods. However, less attention has been given to how this policy – and the earlier increase in sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) excise duties – can shape the health of our next generation. While the intention behind these taxes is clear – to discourage SSB consumption and encourage support for local produce – the real question is: Will they make Malaysian children healthier? A system that helps, not hinder Under the new SST regime, key staples like rice and vegetables are exempt but items such as imported fruits and dairy products (excluding milk) are now taxed at 5%. While the sugar tax is a step towards reducing excessive sugar consumption, the price hikes on imported fruits and dairy products may reduce access to healthier food options and limit the diversity of people's diets, particularly for low-income families. Nutrition crisis among children The latest National Health and Morbidity Survey 2024: Nutrition reveals a sobering reality: One in two children aged five to nine do not consume enough diverse food groups. A shocking 97% of adolescents do not consume the recommended two glasses of milk a day. 87% of adolescents do not consume the recommended two servings of fruits a day. 63% of adolescents drink at least one serving of sugary drinks a day. Malaysia faces a complex nutrition crisis – a triple burden of undernutrition, micronutrient deficiency and obesity. One in five children under five is stunted while one in three adolescents is overweight or obese. These are not just health statistics; they reflect real challenges faced by Malaysian families and the long-term economic risks of a poorly nourished generation. Investing in nutrition Fiscal tools like SSB taxes and SST can support healthier diets but only if paired with meaningful public investment. The government should reinvest tax revenues into nutrition-focused programmes, especially in schools. This includes: - Strengthening nutrition promotion efforts and expanding the reach of the healthy school meal programme through subsidies, so that all students can benefit regardless of income. - Providing free local fruits and milk to students nationwide. Norway has successfully boosted student fruit consumption by 25% through free fruits at schools. Malaysia can follow suit, with the added benefit of supporting local agriculture. - Ramping up monitoring and enforcement of existing guidelines on food and beverage sale within and around schools, including canteens, vending machines, cooperatives and street vendors, to create a healthier food environment for students. Rethinking food subsidies Financial assistance programmes, like Sumbangan Asas Rahmah, are well-intentioned but not nutrition-sensitive. Current options often allow the purchase of processed foods that are high in sugar, salt and fat, while fruits and vegetables are out of reach. This is a missed opportunity to promote healthier eating in the very households that need it most. Let us pivot subsidies to favour nutrient-rich options. A study published in The Lancet Planetary Health found that a 20% price-cut on fruits and vegetables resulted in a 17% increase in purchases. This kind of behavioural change can be transformative for Malaysia's fight against non-communicable diseases, conditions that are already costing us RM51.8 billion in lost productivity and RM12.4 billion in healthcare and disability payments in 2021. Call for urgency and coordination Just as we were united during the Covid-19 pandemic, we must now address the silent crisis of poor diets and child malnutrition with the same urgency. According to the World Bank, every US$1 (RM4.20) invested in tackling malnutrition will yield a US$23 return. That is not just a health dividend; it is economic common sense. If we are going to tax unhealthy consumption, we must also make healthy choices more accessible and affordable. This means turning taxes into targeted investments that nourish our children today to build a healthier and more productive Malaysia tomorrow.
