Groenvold, ski cross medallist at Vancouver Olympics, dies after lightning strike
OSLO, Norway— Olympic ski cross medalist Audun Groenvold has died after being struck by lightning, the Norwegian ski federation announced Wednesday. He was 49.
Groenvold won bronze at the 2010 Vancouver Games.
'It is with great sadness that we have received the news of Audun Groenvold's untimely passing,' the federation said. 'The former national Alpine skier and ski cross athlete was recently struck by lightning during a cabin trip.'
The federation said Groenvold was 'quickly taken to hospital and received treatment for the injuries he sustained in the lightning strike' and then died Tuesday night.
Groenvold was a member of Norway's Alpine skiing team before he moved into freestyle and ski cross. He had one podium finish as a World Cup Alpine skier, finishing third in a downhill in Sierra Nevada, Spain, in 1999.
He also won a bronze medal in ski cross at the 2005 world championships, and the overall ski cross cup in 2007.
After his career ended, he became a national team coach and a TV commentator.
'Norwegian skiing has lost a prominent figure, who has meant so much to both the Alpine and freestyle communities,' federation president Tove Moe Dyrhaug said, adding that his passing creates 'a huge void.'

Nielsen is one of several regulars from this past year's Abbotsford team who have moved to other squads. Winger Sammy Blais, 29, signed as a free agent with the Montreal Canadiens while defenceman Cole McWard agreed on a deal with the New York Islanders and winger Phil Di Giuseppe, 31, came to terms with the Winnipeg Jets. Blais got a one-way contract, while McWard and Di Giuseppe both signed two-way deals. The biggest departure from Abbotsford, of course, is goaltender Artūrs Šilovs , 24, who Vancouver traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins last month for forward Stillman and a 2027 fourth-round draft pick . Šilovs was the AHL playoff most valuable player. Abbotsford's first meeting with Colorado this season is on the road Nov. 7-8 . The Eagles are in Abbotsford March 6-7. Nielsen's teammates with the Eagles could include goaltender Trent Miner, 24. They were both part of the Giants' 2019 run to the WHL finals. Miner, who's an Avalanche 2019 seventh-round draft pick, was the Eagles' starting goalie in the playoffs this past season. Nielsen's best campaign with the Giants was in 2019-20, when he put up 30 goals and 65 points in 61 regular season games.
