Shropshire First: We haven't jumped ship ahead of elections
Davenport and Price will sit as independent councillors."The group was set up because we want to put people before politics," said Davenport."We will be putting out an agenda [ahead of local elections in May], so everybody will know what we're about."Asked if he was abandoning the Conservatives ahead of the election, when all 74 seats on the council will be up for election, he said: "No, this is something I've been thinking about for a long time."I'm in a fairly good seat, I work hard in my ward, I feel I would be OK, so this isn't personal, this is about how we can do better for the county."
Six people have already said they will stand for election for Shropshire First on 1 May, according to the organisation. One of them is north Shropshire resident Verity Dean."When I was asked if I was interested in standing as a county councillor, I thought you had to belong to a political affiliation, and you don't."Watching the Liberal Democrats squabble with the Conservatives whilst Labour sit there rubbing their hands together, it's like a playground and it brings out the worst in the council chamber, not the best," she added. The group is planning an official launch early in 2025, when it will set out its agenda ahead of local elections.Reliable bin collections, accessible healthcare, well-maintained roads and safer street lighting are some of its priorities.

Lucy Connolly who posted vile tweet on day of Southport attack to be released from jail
Lucy Connolly, the wife of a former Conservative county councillor, was jailed last year for inciting racial hatred in the aftermath of the Southport terror attack The wife of a former Conservative county councillor who calling for migrant hotels to be set on fire on the day of the Southport attack is set to be released from jail today, it is reported. Lucy Connolly, 41, had posted on X on the day of the murder of three children by Axel Rudakubana in Southport: "Mass deportation now, set fire to all the f****** hotels full of the bastards for all I care... if that makes me racist so be it." The mum of one was jailed for 31 months in October following the tweet, which was viewed more than 300,000 times before it was deleted. It was reported last month how Connolly, who is a childminder, may be released from HMP Peterborough soon - having served just 40 per cent of her term - and now it is understood the woman will today be granted her freedom. The mum's jail sentence has been criticised as being too harsh, reports The Telegraph who today says the term has ended. Her supporters have argued she was made a scapegoat for the rioting last summer, which followed Rudakubana's murders in Merseyside. Connolly pleaded guilty to inciting racial hatred by publishing and distributing "threatening or abusive" written material on X and was jailed at Birmingham Crown Court in October last year. Sir Keir Starmer defended the jail sentence, stressing it was an "efficient or fair use" of prison, after a Court of Appeal application against her jail term was dismissed. Speaking in May, said: Mr Starmer said: "Sentencing is a matter for our courts, and I celebrate the fact that we have independent courts in this country. I am strongly in favour of free speech, we've had free speech in this country for a very long time and we protect it fiercely. "But I am equally against incitement to violence against other people. I will always support the action taken by our police and courts to keep our streets and people safe." Connolly's post was viewed 310,000 times in three-and-a-half hours before she deleted it. This was flagged by her husband, former councillor Raymond who served on the West Northamptonshire Council, who campaigned for his spouse's release. Chris Philp, the shadow home secretary, said: "Keir Starmer's enthusiasm for prosecuting Lucy Connolly appears to contradict his own guidelines. She rapidly deleted the message and showed remorse. This suggests Keir Starmer is guilty of hypocrisy and double standards by supporting a breach of his own prosecution guidelines." A Government spokesman told Telegraph: "Sentencing is a matter for independent courts, and we support the action taken by the courts, as well as the police, to keep our streets safe. In all cases where Law Officers' consent is required, the Law Officers carefully consider whether to grant consent, including all relevant factors to the public interest in the prosecution."

This hotel crisis is Labour's wake-up call. But will they heed it?: ALAN MENDOZA
As a local councillor, I have no doubt that Epping Forest District Council's extraordinary victory in the High Court on Tuesday will inspire a flood of copycat legal actions that could completely unravel Labour's policy on hotel rooms for migrants. The social and financial cost of providing temporary accommodation, whether for illegal migrants or those granted asylum and then declared homeless, is the biggest concern of many councils.

Kevin Wilkins to stand for Lib Dems in new Senedd seat
Kevin Wilkins has been selected to head the Welsh Liberal Democrats' list for the Sir Fynwy Torfaen constituency in the 2026 Senedd election. A new seat for the 2026 Welsh Parliament elections, Sir Fynwy Torfaen covers the Westminster constituencies of Monmouthshire and Torfaen. Mr Wilkins, who lives in Abergavenny and recently returned to Wales after 30 years living and working around Cambridge, said: "I am honoured to have been selected as a Liberal Democrat candidate for Sir Fynwy Torfaen. "Monmouthshire and Torfaen contain very different communities all of which face real challenges at the moment. "Our NHS in Wales is really struggling, the economy is stalling and our beautiful local rivers are dying. We need better answers than those offered by Labour and the Tories. "I look forward to campaigning alongside Brendan and my Lib Dem friends and colleagues to offer a fair, green and humane alternative to the failings of decades of Labour and Tory rule." He will be joined on the party list for the constituency by Brendan Roberts, a community councillor and campaigner in Henllys. The 2026 Senedd election will be conducted under a proportional representation system, electing six members of the Senedd per constituency. This increases the likelihood of seats for smaller parties such as the Liberal Democrats. Mr Wilkins has a track record of community campaigning. He has helped to save a library, post office, bus service and an avenue of cherry trees from being cut down. If elected, Mr Wilkins has pledged to prioritise improving the NHS and protecting rivers. The Welsh Liberal Democrats are campaigning on issues including childcare, support for small businesses and investment in social care.
