Thug Life to soon release on OTT? Amid poor box office performance, here's what we know about Kamal Haasan's film

Mint2 days ago

Kamal Haasan's latest release Thug Life might be released on OTT sooner than expected, as per multiple reports. The film marks the reunion between filmmaker Mani Ratnam and Haasan. It ran into trouble due to Haasan's controversial 'Tamil-Kannada" remark and suffered a major loss at the box office over its blockage in Karnataka.
Thug Life is a gangster drama, also starring Silambarasan.
Before its release on June 5, Kamal Haasan had shared that Thug Life would mark its OTT debut after 8 weeks of its theatrical release.
The film is said to be streamed online on Netflix. It seems Thug Life can be out on OTT after four weeks of its theatrical release now, reported M9 News.
Reportedly, the OTT giant is evaluating the 8-week schedule since the film received an underwhelming response at the box office.
Thug Life was released on Thursday and saw a decent start, making a business of ₹ 15. 5 crore [Tamil: ₹ 13.35 crore; Hindi: 0.65 crore; Teleugu: 1.5 crore]. However, over the first weekend, instead of showing growth, the film saw a sharp decline in its earnings. On Monday, it only minted ₹ 2.3 crore [Tamil: ₹ 1.9 crore ; Hindi: 0.1 crore; Telugu: ₹ 0.3 crore]. Going by the early estimates now, the film made ₹ 1.75 crore on Tuesday.
However, the makers of the film are yet to make an official announcement about the OTT release.
Talking about Thug Life's OTT release, Kamal Haasan was quoted saying by PTI, "It is not even an experiment, it's a pragmatic thing to do. I'm glad that the OTT (Netflix) agreed. We sat together, and it was not a negotiation. It's a plan, which maybe others could follow.
'It will make the industry healthy and we are glad that we were the first to be there to avail of that opportunity.'
Thug Life is directed by Mani Ratnam, and co-written by Kamal Haasan who is also starring in the lead. It also stars Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal and Rohit Saraf.
The film is produced by Haasan's Raaj Kamal Films International and Madras Talkies.

Language row: Still no apology, K'taka HC tells Haasan, accepts implead application from Kannada org

Bengaluru, Actor Kamal Haasan has not yet issued an apology for his controversial remarks on Kannada language, observed the Karnataka High Court on Friday and directed the producer of his latest film 'Thug Life' to respond to an application filed by Kannada Sahitya Parishat. The application sought intervention in the producer's pleas against the ban on the film's release in the state. The Parishat wanted to place before the Court, the constitutional, cultural and linguistic concerns arising from the statements made by Haasan, particularly from the perspective of protecting the identity, dignity and historical legacy of the Kannada language and culture. The case stems from a statement made by Haasan during the audio release of the film, where he had said that Kannada was born out of Tamil Language. The remark led to a huge controversy and Karnataka leaders and the Film Chamber of the state demanded that the actor withdraw his statement and tender an apology. However, he declined to apologise and opted against releasing the movie in Karnataka on June 5, when it was released worldwide. On Friday, the counsel for production house Raaj Kamal Films International submitted that the actor would need a week's time to file objections to the Kannada Sahitya Parishat's impleadment application. Justice M Nagaprasanna, who heard the case, posted the matter to June 20. Earlier, Raaj Kamal Films International filed a petition seeking adequate security for the movie's release in the state. When the matter came up for hearing before Justice Nagaprasanna on June 3, counsel for the petitioner maintained that there was no malice and an apology was not warranted and submitted that the screening of the movie would not be insisted upon in the state till the issue gets resolved through dialogue. During the hearing, Haasan came in for strong criticism from the court for his remark, and the court observed that a "single apology could have resolved the situation".

EXCLUSIVE: Netflix to re-negotiate Rs 130 crore Thug Life OTT deal after Kamal Haasan starrer's BO failure

Thug Life starring Kamal Haasan and Silambarasan TR hit the big screens on June 5, 2025, but has failed to stand out at the box office. Now, the OTT giant Netflix is re-negotiating its post-theatrical streaming deal. In an exclusive report, we at Pinkvilla learned that Netflix is planning to negotiate a different deal for the movie's OTT release. The agreement is being reconsidered with a 20-25% drop from the previous quoted amount. Earlier, we had reported that the digital rights of the movie were sold to the OTT platform for a whopping Rs 130 crores. The huge number was quoted due to Haasan and Mani Ratnam reuniting after the iconic Nayakan, but it was met with negative reviews on release. Following the mixed reactions, the movie failed to attract audiences to the big screens, resulting in disappointing box office revenue. With Netflix re-negotiating the OTT deal, we'll have to wait and see where their conclusion will reach. There were also reports that the movie would be streamed after 4 weeks since theatrical release, as opposed to the earlier-mentioned eight weeks. Talking about the movie, Thug Life is a gangster actioner focusing on the story of a Rangaraaya Sakthivel, a crime boss based in New Delhi. Following a shootout, the man adopts a young boy named Amaran and raises him as his own. As his foster son grows up and becomes a formidable member of the mafia, the leadership dynamic changes. Now, with a dark animosity brewing between father and son, Sakthivel is dead set on revenge. Aside from the main cast, the movie features an ensemble cast that includes Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Abhirami, Ashok Selvan, Joju George, Nassar, Ali Fazal, and more in key roles. Moving ahead, Kamal Haasan is next set to appear in the tentatively titled KH237 with AnbArivu duo serving as the directors. On the other hand, STR is speculated to soon join hands with director Vetrimaaran for an action venture. He also has multiple films in the lineup.
