South African auto parts group Jendamark braces for US tariff hit
The 40-year-old company based in coastal city Gqeberha builds automated assembly lines for catalytic converters, engines and axles for automotive customers such as BMW (BMWG.DE), opens new tab and Mercedes-Benz (MBGn.DE), opens new tab among others.
But like global automakers and suppliers far and wide, they have been hit hard by U.S. tariffs.
"As it stands now, we've got about 750 million rand of deals with our American customers that (we're) at risk of losing," Siegfried Lokotsch said.
"I don't know if they're going to still buy the lines from us. We thought we were going to get the orders, we were in a good position ... In my mind, they're gone (the contracts) because they've (the tariffs) just gone up."
About 85% of Jendamark's business in South Africa is for export, with 50% of that to the U.S., where it also has an office.
Jendamark is looking for new contracts in other markets, such as Saudi Arabia, but the company has its work cut out to replace the U.S. business it expects to lose.
"To find a new market and to understand how they operate in the country and where the opportunities are is not something that just happens overnight," he said.

Developer given green light to remove hedgerows in Ilminster
One of the UK's largest housebuilders has secured approval to remove large sections of hedgerow ahead of putting forward revised plans for 360 new homes at a nature reserve in Homes was granted planning permission in January 2024 to build homes near the Meadows Surgery, in Canal Way in Ilminster. The development site was designated as a nature reserve by South Somerset District Council in July 2018.A spokesperson for Persimmon Homes said the company would work with the council to "meet our shared goals of taking on the housing crisis with real action, leaving a positive and lasting legacy in Ilminster". The Exeter-based developer submitted plans in June for the access arrangements, which involved removing 120 metres (393ft) of hedges and changing the layout of the surgery's car park. Persimmon said the new development would deliver a biodiversity net gain of 10%, in line with government to the plans, the developer will maximise hedgerow retention, plant additional hedgerows and monitor and manage wildlife said dormouse boxes would be provided and 1.6 hectares (16,000 sq metres) of woodland would be planted. The spokesperson added: "In addition to these ecological enhancements and meeting housing need in the area... we are investing nearly £3.5m in community infrastructure as part of our plans for Ilminster."Persimmon is due to submit the detailed planning application in September, the Local Democracy Reporting Service Council is then expected to make a decision on the development within months.

It's incredible that no EV has got the full Electric Car Grant amount
As more cars become eligible for the Government's electric car grant, it's interesting that none of them yet qualifies for the higher £3,750 amount, with the total now sitting at 24 vehicles to choose from with a £1,500 contribution. With the latest batch of five including the likes of the Cupra Born, Volkswagen ID.3 and Peugeot 2008, there's now a decent array of cars included in the scheme, from the chic Renault 4 and 5 through to the practical, family-friendly Nissan Ariya – a former Auto Express Car of the Year! – the Vauxhall Frontera and the Renault Scenic. But it is interesting that nothing has yet achieved the full grant, especially as it's not clear from the outside how the calculations are being worked out. Advertisement - Article continues below Many industry commentators predicted the Renault 4 and 5 should be in pole position for the higher amount, but that didn't happen. That may have revealed something about where the batteries are coming from, and not all are yet being produced at the shiny new plant in northern France. When that facility is up to speed, there's a chance the Renault cars eligible for the grant – the 4, 5, Megane and Scenic are the ones that currently get £1,500 – could be moved to the higher level. But that's far from clear, due to the way the system has been set up. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below Want to make the switch to an electric car? Our fantastic Buy a Car service has loads of great value new and used electric cars available right now. I've heard some cynical types suggest glibly that the bar for eligibility for the full £3,750 has deliberately been set unachievably high, so the headlines featured a nice big number, but behind the scenes the Government knew full well that few cars, if any, were going to achieve it. I'm sure that wasn't the case, but the lack of clarity isn't helpful. From what I hear, even manufacturers don't know how close they have come to achieving the higher grant level – they can reapply if anything changes, such as battery supply coming from a different country. However, it sounds like there's little transparency as to why a car is only eligible at the lower level, and if it's down to the environmental credentials of where the batteries are built – coal reliance versus nuclear, for example. The big one will be when the UK-built Nissan Leaf goes on sale in the coming weeks; if that car isn't eligible, then I'm guessing nothing will be. At least the grant scheme will last longer if it's ebbing away at £1,500 a car, rather than nearly £4,000. Pessimistic early projections had it running out as soon as next spring if too many cars were eligible for the higher level. It's obvious that won't be happening now! Uganda targets higher exports with first large-scale gold mine
KAMPALA, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Uganda has inaugurated its first large-scale gold mine, a $250 million Chinese-owned project in the country's east that will also refine the bullion to 99.9% purity, according to a statement from the president's office. The landlocked east African country, which has a variety of minerals including copper, cobalt and iron ore, wants to expand its mining industry and position itself as a major gold producer and exporter. Last year Uganda raised $3.4 billion from gold exports, according to central bank data, about 37% of the country's total export revenue. The figure includes the re-export of gold brought into the country, with nearly all its domestic production from small-scale artisanal miners. While its gold export earnings have increased in recent years, it is still far behind Africa's largest bullion producer Ghana, which raised $11.6 billion from shipments of the metal last year. "In order to wake up in the minerals sector, we must have full value addition for all minerals like gold, lithium, tin among others," President Yoweri Museveni said in a statement issued late on Saturday. The Wagagai Gold Mining Project, owned by Wagagai Mining (U) Limited and covering just over nine square kilometres in Busia district, was inaugurated by Museveni on Saturday. The plant, which has started operations, is expected to process 5,000 tons of gold ore per day and produce about 1.2 metric tons of refined gold a year, according to the statement. That compares to Uganda's total domestic production of just 0.0042 tons in 2023. Uganda will use the revenue generated by exporting gold to develop assets such as power stations and the country's railway, Museveni said. Landlocked Uganda is currently constructing a 2.7 billion euro ($3.16 billion) standard gauge railway to reduce the cost of transporting its exports and imports via neighbouring Kenya.
