Four Rising Defenders To Watch For The PWHL Draft
Defenders often take more time to assess, and if they are defensively inclined, sometimes they can be overlooked in favor of higher scoring blueliners.
Here's a look at five defenders who are PWHL Draft prospects who've seen their stock rise in the last month.
Dayle Ross, St. Cloud State - Steady and physical, Ross has flown under the radar in the powerhouse WCHA. She skates well and could be a solid addition who can play third pairing minutes and kill penalties in the PWHL.
Nina Jobst-Smith, Minnesota-Duluth - Has excelled internationally for Germany and has been a foundational piece for Minnesota-Duluth throughout her career. Few give Jobst-Smith the accolades she deserves, but she sees the ice well, doesn't shy away from tough spots, and is consistent.
Skylar Fontaine, ZSC Lions - A four-time All-American with Northeastern, Fontaine is one of the most decorated players to come through NCAA hockey in the last decade. She was twice named a Patty Kazmaier top ten finalist, and was the Hockey East Defender of the Year three times. She's spent the past three seasons in Switzerland where she was named the Swiss league's Best Defender last year. After her visa was declined to return to Switzerland next season, the door has opened wide for a potential PWHL stop.
Tamara Giaquinto, Boston University - The Boston University captain has shown offensive growth. She knows how to defend, and if she can continue to develop her offensive skills, she could play valuable depth minutes in the league. Named a Hockey East First Team All-Star this season.

Paige Bueckers wows NBA champion with WNBA-record 44 points
Not being able to stay in his seat, Chet Holmgren became Paige Bueckers' top fan after each bucket. The NBA champion chose quite the night to sit front row and attend a WNBA game with one of the more entertaining matchups of the season. Holmgren supported his fellow Minnesotan during a career night. Bueckers scored a career-best 44 points in the Dallas Wings' 81-80 loss to the Los Angeles Sparks on Wednesday. The performance broke a WNBA record for most points scored in a game by a rookie. The back-and-forth thriller ended with Kelsey Plum's game-winner. Shown on the broadcast with his 2025 NBA champion hat, Holmgren took to social media to articulate how amazed he was with Bueckers' all-time performance. Not only did she drop 40-plus points, but she did so on superb efficiency. She shot 17-of-21 from the field, which included a perfect 4-of-4 from 3 and 6-of-6 on free throws. Bueckers has lived up to her prospect hype. The 23-year-old has been a household name since high school. She became one of the greatest college players ever at UConn. After being taken with the No. 1 pick in the 2025 WNBA draft, she's secured the Rookie of the Year trophy and has received some All-WNBA Team buzz. As most know, Holmgren is a basketball addict. Mark Daigneault would let you know he sleeps in his sneakers. As he continues to enjoy his offseason after capturing an NBA championship, he stopped by to show Bueckers some love after her best performance yet. Craig Breslow adds upgrades to improve Red Sox roster
The roster needed a refresh and over a span of three days Breslow made four changes. It started on Tuesday when lefthander Jovani Morán was optioned and replaced by Brennan Bernardino. That was an upgrade. Bernardino has been a reliable option the last three season and was only in Worcester to get a little down time after appearing in 47 of the first 108 games. Advertisement 'I feel great,' said Bernardino, who threw a perfect inning on Tuesday against the Orioles. 'The time there was good for me.' Get Starting Point A guide through the most important stories of the morning, delivered Monday through Friday. Enter Email Sign Up The Sox finally dropped struggling righthander Isaiah Campbell on Wednesday and replaced him with righthander Richard Fitts, who has a 3.78 earned run average in 14 starts for the Sox the last two seasons. Fitts should be capable of giving the Sox multiple innings out of the bullpen, something they badly need with Walker Buehler and Dustin May in the rotation. Fitts also offers an option should the Sox decide to drop Buehler from the rotation. But Buehler does have a 3.77 ERA in his last eight starts and the Sox have won five of those games. The Sox then designated infielder Abraham Toro for assignment on Thursday. That was overdue by at least a few days. David Hamilton was recalled to take his place on the roster. Advertisement Toro was a solid contributor through the All-Star break as part of a platoon at first base with Romy Gonzalez. But a .488 OPS in 25 games since the break along with defensive issues forced a change. 'I think Toro did an amazing job for us. We're not here without him,' manager Alex Cora said. He's not wrong. Toro and Gonzalez helped keep the Sox afloat when Triston Casas was lost for the season in May. But his lengthy slump and defensive issues couldn't be ignored much longer. With Nathaniel Lowe and Gonzalez platooning at first base, Hamilton can play second base and allow the Red Sox to use Ceddanne Rafaela where he belongs in center field. Through Wednesday, Rafaela had a .796 OPS in 383 plate appearances as a center fielder and a .325 OPS in 93 plate appearances at second base — all since July 12. Just leave him in center field. The fourth move wasn't one the Sox wanted to make. But right fielder Wilyer Abreu wasn't making any progress with his strained right calf and the decision was made on Thursday to put him on the injured list and call up 22-year-old Jhostynxon Garcia from Triple A Worcester. Garcia made a last-minute dash from Worcester to New York and arrived just after 6 p.m. Garcia — whose first name is pronounced JOES-tin-son — was given No. 51. That doesn't suggest he'll be around for too long. Rob Refsnyder is eligible to come off the injured list on Monday in Baltimore. His left oblique strain seems to be getting better based on his being with the team here and the on-field workout he did before the game on Thursday. Advertisement Cora pronounced himself pleased with how the roster looks after all the moves. 'I think we were more dynamic,' he said. 'We'll be able to keep mixing and matching … the fresh arms and the bullpen make a difference with Yeah. 'We went through a stretch there that we needed to do that because we weren't flexible roster-wise. But now we are now we are.' Is it enough? It has to be with the trade deadline long past. Tuberville rips NFL over male cheerleaders: ‘What the hell are you doing?'
Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) on Tuesday criticized the NFL and the Minnesota Vikings over their inclusion of male cheerleaders. The organization earlier this month introduced its cheerleading roster for the upcoming 2025 NFL season, including Blaize Shiek and Louie Conn, the team's two male cheerleaders, in an Instagram video. 'The next generation of cheer has arrived!' the Vikings wrote on Aug. 9. The post drew backlash online, and Shiek and Conn for weeks have faced derogatory slurs and hateful comments as the center of debates over male cheerleaders and masculinity. 'I would like to ask the ownership of the NFL and the commissioner, what the hell are you doing?' Tuberville said on an episode of the podcast 'Hot Mic,' aired by the conservative sports news site OutKick. 'If you're going to be woke and you're going to try to, you know, take the men out of men's sports is what they're doing … then you're going to have a huge problem.' 'At the end of the day, I hope to God it doesn't come south to Atlanta, or to Texas, or to Dallas or to some of our NFL teams, because you'll lose it. I mean, people will actually quit buying tickets and going,' added Tuberville, a former college football coach who announced in May that he would leave the Senate after four years to run for governor of Alabama. 'This is the narrative they're trying to push out — this is not just a couple of people being men cheerleaders. It is about pushing a narrative that you want to put gender into sports and let everybody know that we're trying to show that, 'Hey, we're going to take the masculinity out of it a little bit,' and that's not going to happen in the South,' he said. Male dancers have been a part of NFL organizations since 2018, when Quinton Peron and Napoleon Jinnies joined the Los Angeles Rams' 40-person squad. They made NFL history in 2019 as the first men to perform on the sidelines of a Super Bowl game, when the Rams played the New England Patriots in Atlanta. In an op-ed published Tuesday by The Guardian, former Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive end R.K. Russell wrote that complaints about male cheerleaders 'are even more baseless than the Monday Morning Quarterbacks.' 'This isn't about performance at all. It's about presence. It's about the mere existence and visibility of men on NFL cheer squads who don't conform to the rigid, outdated ideas of masculinity that so many use sport, and football in particular, to defend,' wrote Russell, who came out publicly as bisexual to ESPN in 2019. 'The outrage over male cheerleaders isn't about sports. It's about control: over masculinity, over image, and over who gets to be seen and celebrated in public spaces or on the global stage of the NFL.' A Minnesota Vikings spokesperson did not immediately return The Hill's request for comment on Tuberville's comments or the broader backlash. The organization told NBC News last week that, 'while many fans may be seeing male cheerleaders for the first time at Vikings games, male cheerleaders have been part of previous Vikings teams and have long been associated with collegiate and professional cheerleading.' 'In 2025, approximately one third of NFL teams have male cheerleaders,' the team said. 'Every member of the Minnesota Vikings Cheerleaders program has an impressive dance background and went through the same rigorous audition process. Individuals were selected because of their talent, passion for dance and dedication to elevating the game day experience. We support all our cheerleaders and are proud of the role they play as ambassadors of the organization.' Responding to claims that some fans have canceled their season tickets over the team's inclusion of male cheerleaders, the Vikings told NBC News that no fans have done so. In a joint Instagram post on Saturday, Shiek and Conn appeared to respond to the controversy, captioning a photo showing the two of them in their cheer uniforms: 'wait…did someone say our name?' A number of prominent Republican political leaders have also been cheerleaders: Former President George W. Bush cheered at Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., serving as head cheerleader his senior year, and at Yale University. Former President Reagan was a cheerleader at Eureka College in the 1930s.
