Lincoln Riley and USC not lacking in confidence despite recent records
The vibe around USC football this offseason has certainly been an interesting one. On one hand, with new general manager Chad Bowden at the helm, the Trojans are dominating on the recruiting trail, and currently hold the No. 1 class in the country for the 2026 cycle. On the other hand, however, USC has a record of just 14-11 over the past two seasons, which is far from what the expectation was when Lincoln Riley was hired.
Last month, college football analyst Josh Pate of CBS Sports paid a visit to Los Angeles and spent some time with Riley and Bowden. During his visit, Pate took note of the confidence around the program.

"If you walked in that building right now, but you didn't know what the record had been last year, you would think they're coming off a playoff appearance," Pate said on a recent episode of his popular Josh Pate's College Football Show. "You would think that they are regularly expected to compete for the national championship.
"And that's because they do expect that. But it's not baseless . . . they just believe in the moves they've made.
"They walk around like they've already ordered something, and they know it's arriving in the mail tomorrow. They have that kind of confidence . . . the vibe was that of a place where the internal feeling is so totally detached from the outside world."
USC fans are certainly excited about the moves that the Trojans have made this offseason. At the end of the day, however, that only does so much if the team is not winning on the field. After consecutive seasons of five or more losses, USC fans are expecting significant improvement from the Trojans in 2025.

The Jets also don't have the deepest receiver room behind Garrett Wilson, so there is an opportunity to climb the depth chart if he can endear himself to Aaron Glenn and Co." Well, we aren't expecting 800 yards and a handful of touchdowns, but more so, when the opportunities are presented to him, he takes them. He played just 91 combined snaps across offense and special teams last season, so seeing that number increase will help, but again, he must demonstrate that he is worthy of more reps. Advertisement That will come this offseason at OTAs, mini-camp, and then training camp. It appears there is a chance for Malachi to rise up the depth chart in 2025 under Engstrand; he just has to take advantage of the opportunity when it comes his way. Arrington really liked his Washington visit last weekend. He could love his Oregon trip as the Ducks and Texas A&M are recruiting him the hardest. USC seems to be fading in his recruitment as Oregon, Texas A&M, Penn State and Washington are the frontrunners and making the biggest impact. Advertisement With his position versatility, his track background and so much more, Oregon looks like a top contender in Arrington's recruitment and this weekend could push the Ducks even higher on his list. RYDER LYONS, Oregon (June 13) How is this not shaping up great for Oregon? The five-star quarterback from Folsom, Calif., has Oregon and BYU visits coming up and then some fringe programs also involved with Michigan, Ohio State and Ole Miss in the mix. It seems like USC is a long shot in his recruitment which further solidifies the Ducks at the top. Oregon lost four-star QB Jonas Williams to USC and five-star quarterback Jared Curtis picked Georgia over the Ducks. Coach Dan Lanning and his staff have now prioritized Lyons, who could be similar to Bo Nix in that offense with more athleticism outside the pocket, and BYU just feels like a stretch at this point. VANCE SPAFFORD, Miami (June 20) Spafford remains committed to Georgia but he's going through his visit schedule this month starting at Washington, at UCLA this weekend, then he'll be at Georgia and will close out June at Miami before the Rivals Five-Star and then back to South Florida for the OT7 nationals. It's a busy time for the Mission Viejo, Calif. Standout. Advertisement A commitment to the Bulldogs since early November, the biggest threat to flip Spafford is Miami as he loves Coral Gables, the coaches there and the opportunity at wide receiver. That he's taking his final visit there is also telling but Georgia will have its chance soon as well. JETT WASHINGTON, Oregon (this weekend) Washington canceled his Ohio State official visit to move up his Oregon visit - another sign that the Ducks are a major frontrunner in his recruitment. The Ducks are very high on the list with Alabama (where he already visited) and Washington took a mid-week trip to USC as well. This will be the last official visit - for now - for the four-star safety from Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman and that's a great sign for Oregon. He moved up his trip, it's his final planned trip for now and the Ducks have been in a strong position throughout his recruitment. The Ducks are sitting pretty - if things go really well this weekend. RICHARD WESLEY, Oregon (this weekend) On May 10 during a visit to Oregon, the five-star defensive end jumped in a pool with coach Dan Lanning to announce his commitment to the Ducks. Before he could dry off, the Chatsworth (Calif.) Sierra Canyon standout had backed off that pledge 17 days later since he didn't clear the pledge with those close to him. Wesley is back at Oregon this weekend as the coaching staff looks to continue to mend fences and work on getting Wesley back in the fold as the Ducks have always been one of his favorites. The five-star standout is also considering Ohio State, Texas A&M, Texas and others but Oregon can put itself back in a great spot with a solid visit this weekend.

USC football countdown to kickoff continues—Shaun Cody in in focus The countdown to USC's 2025 football season is officially on! The Trojans kick off their new campaign 84 days from today. You need something to help you while away the days and hours in the spring and summer. This is one way to do so. In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. Today, we take a look at legendary USC defensive lineman Shaun Cody. Position: Defensive line Years played at USC: 2001-2004 Career highlights: Cody was one of the first massive recruits of the Pete Carroll era at USC. Famously, Cody and his father were set on him going to Notre Dame, but Carroll and defensive line coach Ed Orgeron were able to change their mind and convince Cody to come to USC. The move paid off for both sides, as Cody became a standout on Carroll's early USC teams. Cody won two national championships with the Trojans, serving as a captain of USC's 2004 title team as a senior. That year, he was named a first-team All-American after recording 44 tackles and nine sacks. After USC: Cody was selected in the second round of the 2005 NFL draft by the Detroit Lions. He would go on to play eight seasons in the league, four with Detroit and four with the Houston Texas. He recorded double-digit tackles in all eight of his NFL seasons, including a career-high 38 with Houston in 2010. Cody currently serves as an analyst on the radio broadcast of USC football games. He is also a co-host of USC's official "Trojans Live" show, which airs weekly during football season (with some episodes during the spring as well).
